Would you go to London for a night away?

We usually go a lot and I'm tempted to book a Sunday to Monday break for dp and I.

Would you? We'd have to go on the train and then aim to walk everywhere.

No because the main reasons for going to London (theatres, museums, culture) are not available. We're not going away at all this year but we are lucky to live in a beautiful part of the country so will be having a staycation.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/07/2020 16:16

I am doing this for my birthday next month.

Helenj1977 · 16/07/2020 16:19

We do usually go to the theatre but I also love just walking around.

@Waxonwaxoff0 What are your plans while you're there?

OpheliasCrayon · 16/07/2020 16:38

Yes if things are open

If they aren't I wouldn't really see the point

But risk wise, sure, I'd go.

Bouledeneige · 16/07/2020 16:40

In London right now the infection rate is low. So your main concern will be travelling there and what if the usual entertainment and city life is available. There are plenty of markets and street vendors opening up and you can eat out if you book.

Destroyedpeople · 16/07/2020 16:41

I would certainly consider it....might be a bit dull right now for you with no shows etc....

katy1213 · 16/07/2020 16:44

Museums are open already or opening soon. It's a good time to come!

Isotope456 · 16/07/2020 16:51

I'd consider it but it would depend on what's open.

Houseplantmad · 16/07/2020 16:53

If you're considering going to galleries, you need to book a slot.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/07/2020 16:54

@Helenj1977 I have friends there so I'm planning to meet them somewhere for lunch, then have a wander round. I have actually booked the Shangri-la at the Shard for a birthday treat as it's my 30th, so I'll be spending a lot of time at the hotel and using the pool if it's open! Smile

onemouseplace · 16/07/2020 16:55

I would - you'll just have to make sure you book in advance for anything you want to do. I think it'll be lovely actually - much less busy than usual.

tinytemper66 · 16/07/2020 16:57

Yes. Am going twice in 2 weeks; once with my husband and again with my best friend (we should be in Spain but flights were cancelled) we will sight see and walk around sensibly and book restaurants etc

Duchessofealing · 16/07/2020 17:03

I was in Soho on Tuesday - it’s lovely and quiet to mooch around. Tubes were pretty quiet too.

okiedokieme · 16/07/2020 17:04

I would, might be nicer without the hoards of overseas tourists! I think you need to book museum entry in advance though

sashagabadon · 16/07/2020 17:29

Yes you should. Central london is lovely right now.
Museums, art galleries are all opening but you have to book time entry tickets for most so look on websites. You'll never get this opportunity again

Orangedaisy · 16/07/2020 17:31

If you do this please travel off peak. Trains are supposed to only be used by those who absolutely need to travel and leisure travel is being discouraged.

Helenj1977 · 16/07/2020 17:41

Brilliant, thank you everyone 😀

@Waxonwaxoff0 Have a great time 🍻

@Orangedaisy We'd avoid the tubes etc and would walk everywhere.

Just deciding if we'd drive or get the train there.

tinytemper66 · 16/07/2020 18:38

We are driving there and staying in west London just off M4. Hoping to walk in central London as far as possible before getting the tube.

Helenj1977 · 16/07/2020 19:42

We've booked it! Thank you everyone for giving me the confidence 😀

Why wouldn't you?
You'll be absolutely fine.

AuntieMarys · 16/07/2020 19:56

We are going for a couple of nights next month. Andy Warhol at the Tate. And anything else that's on!!!

Puppylucky · 16/07/2020 19:57

Actually tube travel is not for essential journeys only any more. People need to start using public transport before the system collapses all together

MinesaBottle · 16/07/2020 20:19

The tube is fine, it’s cleaned regularly and treated with antiviral disinfectant. It’s not heaving, in fact as Puppylucky said they want people to use public transport or eventually there won’t be any - TfL came close to going bankrupt because of the pandemic. You need to wear a face covering in stations and on trains (and buses or cabs) unless you’re exempt.

One good effect of the lockdown is you can generally get a reservation for a day or two’s time at restaurants where you’d normally have to wait months!!

Not sure how those of us who live in London are meant to access things in the centre of town then, given you don't drive into central London.

Public transport is a way of life in London.
