Roll neck jumpers

Im not interested in being told I'm awful for only wanting to do the bare minimum to meet the rules. If that's what people think of me I'm absolutely fine with that opinion. I've kept a distance from people and will continue to do so but since it is for the odd weekly shop every so often and that's about it as I don't go shopping, ever,

Is a roll neck sweater pulled up over my mouth and nose ok as a face covering?

I have quite a few health problems which whilst wouldn't exempt me from wearing a face covering, does make them slightly problematic, but a roll neck works for me since I wear them anyway

Probably it’ll be acceptable in that you won’t get kicked out of the shops but really you need something at least 2-3 layers thick for it to be even slightly effective. As long as you’re also staying 2m away from people whenever possible and not coughing/spitting/breathing heavily on people it should be fine though.

Toilenstripes · 15/07/2020 15:41

Who knows? Maybe PHE will draft a list of suitable alternative face coverings to address Every. Single. Person. Who doesn’t want to follow the rules.

Chaosreigns123 · 15/07/2020 15:45

Don't know, but I'm considering wrapping a scarf round my face for grocery trips.

I also don't care if I'm called awful.

You're right. I don't want to follow this rule. But I will and if this counts then I'm following it.

If they decide to state, like Wales for example it had to be three layers or something then I will do that. But for as long as it is any face covering, and a jumper counts, then that's what I'll do.

I dislike shopping and so only go for the weekly shop, and I dislike being around people I don't know, even more. So the chances of me being even 2m from someone is unlikely !

If we get a heatwave in august are you really going to wear a roll neck jumper rather than a mask?

Depending on the jumper it could be quite thick, I have a thick, knitted roll neck jumper that is about 20 times thicker than my reusable masks. Also a pulled up jumper wouldn't have gaps at the side or bottom like a lot of masks you see people in.

A roll neck jumper seems quite hot for summer though, and maybe a bit hard to keep up over your nose? Would a scarf work? You can at least take that off once you've left the shop?

If I go shopping I go in the evening, and I have temperature dysregulation so I am usually cold. In the evening I would definitely have a sweater on whatever month it was

If for any reason I didn't, I would of course cover my face with something else.

I’m planning on using a neck gaitor

cassgate · 15/07/2020 17:18

I am not planning on going in any shops at all from 24th. We haven’t had any trouble getting grocery deliveries so will continue with those. If I do have to go in a shop I will loosely wrap a thin scarf around my face. I also wear a lot of roll neck jumpers in the winter and I hadn’t thought of pulling it up so will probably go that if I have no choice.

minisoksmakehardwork · 15/07/2020 18:58

It covers your face therefore would be a face covering. The government has not, as far as I am aware, mandated how many layers or what type of material a face covering has to be made from. You could just as easily use a piece of kitchen roll or a paper bag as you could a scarf or face mask.

Common sense dictates it should cover face and nose but I don't think even that has been specified if a person wanted to play devils advocate.

Quarantino · 15/07/2020 19:08

Would you be able to talk with it on?

esveee · 15/07/2020 20:10

Probably acceptable, but you'll look ridiculous.

Rockhopper81 · 15/07/2020 20:29

I agree that technically it's a face covering, and it would work in the same way as a neck gaiter/buff, so I'd go for it if you were comfortable.

It's all well and good saying it needs to be 2/3 layers thick, but they're also saying a neck gaiter is fine, and they're not thick at all - they won't take long to get damp at all. Which makes no sense if you're supposed to use something to catch droplets, as they will then be even more permeable?

And I'm no sure you'll look any more ridiculous than anybody else, truth be told.

Ophelia, what is your objection to a piece of paper as opposed to pulling up your jumper over your nose?

Does it matter?

Seems that a jumper is thicker than what people intend to use so we're all good?

It seems rather a awkward solution when you have a a lighter one made of paper available - or, you can get or make washable cotton ones if you'd prefer those. So I suppose I'm wondering why you're choosing 'awkward' over 'handy'.

Because that's my preference.

I assume you have yours.

I can't see why you can't wear that.

You're covering your mouth and nose so job done.

I'd try that but I am quite overheated most days at the moment so had better not.

TheClaws · 16/07/2020 13:46

Okay. You make your 'statement' (uncomfortably), meanwhile most other people just get on with things, wear masks, and in a few months this will be done.

Will do!

How could the authorities enforce the 2-3 layer thing though? They can hardly ask you to remove your masks so they can inspect it,
