There's already a thread on this!

Bluewavescrashing · 14/07/2020 18:21

And no deal Brexit 😳

Sherloidbaisherloid · 14/07/2020 18:32

This is worst case scenario, not a prediction of what is actually going to happen. Stop scaremongering

Mamamia456 · 14/07/2020 18:49

The important words in that article are could happen and might happen. It doesn't mean it will happen.

FrugiFan · 14/07/2020 19:04

The key word here is could. The second wave could be worse. Conversely it could be nonexistent. You could be hit by a bus and die tomorrow or you could live to be 120. Theres not point in worrying about it.

lifesalongsong · 14/07/2020 19:06

@Bmidreams

There's already a thread on this!
That seems to be the way it's going at the moment, loads of repetitive threads, it's too hard to have one coherent discussion in the cororna topic.
Bollss · 14/07/2020 19:07

Could could could could could.

But might not.

Also doesnt take into account lockdowns local or otherwise, treatments (which we now have) and vaccines which we may well have by then.

A load of old scaremongering bollocks.

OverTheRainbow88 · 14/07/2020 19:24

Ok thanks. All the coulds have made me feel better

OP posts:
yeOldeTrout · 14/07/2020 19:48

I don't think winter wave will be worse... I am quite sure that UK govts have very widespread support to do whatever it takes to not let that happen. The measures taken might be quite unpleasant in own right, of course. Leicester style lockdowns with no school or gatherings and few shops open. Imagine no Christmas gatherings with anyone outside your household. I believe that most the public would support this, though, so it's how things are going to happen as the worst case scenario.

Forgone90 · 14/07/2020 19:53

Scarmongerers are back again I see... Failed to mention in your post that if the r rate goes to 1.1 for the whole winter they would only expect to see 1200 excess deaths...

FidgetWonkham · 14/07/2020 19:57

The cynic in me thinks this is being reported now to justify backtracking on mask wearing in shops!

BigChocFrenzy · 14/07/2020 20:02

This was a group directed by the government to calculate the "reasonable worst case"
so that this could be planned and resourced

This is NOT a forecast
It is for emergency contingency planning purposes only

However, it is not helpful to throw out accusations of "scare-mongering" at anxious posters who don't understand some of this

The OP has posted and hopefully has now been reassured

OverTheRainbow88 · 14/07/2020 20:05

Yes reassured thanks, I may just stop reading/listening to the news for the time

It’s so unhelpful isn’t it.

‘The estimate does not take into account any lockdowns, treatments or vaccines.
And the scientists say: "The risk... could be reduced if we take action immediately".‘

Well fucking obviously. If we all stop all the massive interventions there’s likely to be a big second wave. But we haven’t and we aren’t. Action has been taken. It’s complete scaremongering.

Napqueen1234 · 14/07/2020 20:18

Not you Scaremongering OP- the press.

Forgone90 · 14/07/2020 20:40

Oh yes sorry op I read it as you were pushing the figures.. I Do apologise. If I have learned anything in this it's that the press are disgusting.. Have even lost respect for the BBC

Orangeblossom78 · 14/07/2020 20:44

The BBC is itself a scaremongerer

Littlemeadow123 · 14/07/2020 20:55

It will be what it will be. There are other articles out there saying that there is a heatwave coming with temperatures high enough it kill the virus off completely. No one knows what is going to happen .

IcedPurple · 14/07/2020 21:14

@Orangeblossom78

The BBC is itself a scaremongerer
Yep.

Not quite as bad as The Guardian, but getting there.

Remember that BBC piece with some TV doctor giving 'guidelines' for socialsing in people's gardens? As in, measure 2 metres distance with broomsticks, set alarms so you can all wash your hands every 45 minutes and tell overweight men over 50 to bring their own cutlery.

Kid you not.

MyNameWas · 14/07/2020 21:28

'The estimate does not take into account any lock downs, treatments or vaccines.'

This-

CuppaZa · 14/07/2020 21:36

This isn’t new information. Right from the beginning, we were advised of these varying possibilities this winter.

shquadleis · 14/07/2020 21:39

Nothing here is new information and really we have no idea, it's all speculation. Sharing stuff like this just makes more people feel shit.

Orangeblossom78 · 14/07/2020 21:41

yes the BBC actually said 'we need to have a degree of paranoia' about it. with their catastrophising, they can do it for us...

Orangeblossom78 · 14/07/2020 21:42

You mean this Icedpurple www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-52848793

cyclingmad · 14/07/2020 21:42

Because the previous model was soooooo accurate...not...ao why are people falling for this again...like lemmings with no critical thinking involved
