Blood clots and Covid. Should I take blood thinners?

Beebityboo · 14/07/2020 09:51

I need some advice now more data has come out about Covid and blood clotting. I have a condition that makes me more prone to blood clots than others and have had elevated d dimer tests in the past.

I'm not shielded as it is a rare disorder so there really isn't enough data to suggest what my risk actually is.
Do you think I should take aspirin daily or ask my GP to put me on preventative blood thinners like I have when pregnant?

The DC's will all be in school in September and I'm trying to reduce my risk as much as possible for if/when I do get it.

I can totally see your point, OP.

I'm on blood thinners and aspirin. It's something that you should definitely be asking your GP, OP.

I have to say, I dislike taking aspirin and blood thinners. They do make you feel really tired, you'll bruise more easily, and you have to take a PPI along with them to minimise the risk of developing ulcers. And PPIs can have some nasty side effects. You have to find the right one that agrees with you.

I guess it's all down to how at risk are you of developing clots, especially in world with covid in it. So I think it's really worth a talk with your GP about the benefits of taking an aspirin a day and also asking him/her if you need to go 'bigger guns' and go on a blood thinner. Your GP ought to really weigh this up with you, considering your history. If you go online to your surgery's site, look under the tab 'services' and you should find e-consult which is a great way of sending your GP a message about your concerns. He/she will email you a reply. I've found it really useful! Good luck!

Is taking an aspirin a day risky? I'm hoping that would be enough to mitigate the risk as I found clexane injections really painful. I also never took any PPI meds along with clexane before.

No one on here has the information needed to advise you in the best course of action other than to tell you to talk to your GP or Consultant.

Inkpaperstars · 14/07/2020 13:10

I have a condition that puts me at more risk of clots, I am on a daily aspirin anyway and sometimes Clexane injections. I have not been advised by my doctors to take more blood thinners as a result of Covid being around, but told to contact them if I get it for advice.

You should ring your haematology team about this. I suspect that taking a aspirin a day at least will be a good idea for you Covid or no covid but really, get their advice.

Inkpaperstars · 14/07/2020 13:11

I don't take a PPI either.

BigChocFrenzy · 14/07/2020 13:18

Please ask your doctor - not MN or Google !

Your doctors will know your individual health details
and they should have received the latest medical knowledge about COVID

oldbagface · 14/07/2020 13:27

@Inkpaperstars what's the problem with PPI's? I take those. Is it an increased risk?

ohthegoats · 14/07/2020 13:29

I have a similar thing. I've not been told by my doctor to do anything different.

Belowwreck · 14/07/2020 13:31

speak to your consultant/GP. I've been told it won't help and that I'm at no extra risk.

TheVanguardSix · 14/07/2020 13:36

Thinning the blood comes with its own risks, like the increased risk of hemorrhagic strokes. Aspirin alone increases this risk. So, going on blood thinners/aspirin is a bigger deal than it sounds. What are the risks, in your specific case? What are the benefits, in your specific case?

Your GP will guide you. Don't start popping aspirin without his/her guidance first.

mumwon · 14/07/2020 13:37

when you have a complex health condition & take a variety of medications you should be very careful about taking anything that isnt prescribed
So
Contact your consultant (or his secretary when you get through to hospital ask to speak to hers/his secretary & explain you may be given their email) for anybody else if you cant get hold of your gp talk to your pharmacist - they may refer you to gp/consultant but they are always a good first call as they understand drug interactions

TheVanguardSix · 14/07/2020 13:45

I don't know about clexane (injectable anticoagulant). When I was on an anticoagulant after childbirth, I wasn't given a PPI. Only now, on clopidogrel, a blood thinner in tablet form, am I on a PPI to reduce the risk of a duodenal ulcer/gastric bleeding/ulcers.

From WebMD "Pain relievers such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and naproxen sodium (Aleve) interfere with the stomach's ability to protect itself from damaging acids. These NSAIDs promote ulcers by disrupting the mucus that coats the stomach lining, and by disturbing other natural defenses against digestive juices"

That said, I hate taking my PPI. I get the worst side effects (which most people don't experience). I'll be off it by next March though. So it's not the rest of my life. It's best to not have to take any pills, so in all honesty OP, if you don't have to take aspirin, great. See what your GP advises.

Inkpaperstars · 14/07/2020 14:08

@oldbagface

There's no problem that I know of, but then I probably wouldn't know. I was just saying that I haven't been taking one alongside aspirin or clexane. No one has suggested it, that's all.

oldbagface · 14/07/2020 14:12

Thank you @Inkpaperstars

Purplewithred · 14/07/2020 14:18

Ask your consultant or GP. Clotting is a very complex process; clot formation in people in ITU with Covid is a really tricky issue.

girlofthenorth · 15/07/2020 20:33

HCP here - aspirin does not work in the same way as heparin like Clexane . It will not stop you getting a venous clot. Do not take any medication like this without checking with GP .

Sorry dodgy WiFi didn't mean to post three timesConfused

rainbowunicorn · 15/07/2020 22:22

FFS why the hell would you ask such important medical advice on here. A bunch of random people that have no knowlege of your condition.
In th enicest possible way OP don't be so bloody stupid. Contact your GP or consultant for advice.

mouse70 · 15/07/2020 22:28

Yet another question posted here that should be put to a Dr not random strangers on here

Beebityboo · 16/07/2020 07:08

I was just pondering really I definitely wouldn't take medication without speaking to a GP. Thanks all.
