When will 1m rule be scrapped?

My workplace has said we will be WFH until the 1m rule is scrapped. When do you think that’ll be? Surely it won’t be this year?

"no bugger does it anyway"

Yes, we do. Though you might not see us, as shielding does not pause until 1August, and even then we need to take distancing very seriously.

The key question here is whether your need to,go,within 2m of strangers outweighs their need to have that distance for medical reasons.

Do we as a society actually care enough about each other to ensure that everyone can leave their homes?

Yes, the advice is that we can go outside for daily exercise. But that won't be possible if the pavements are full of people who think 2m is wrong, that 1m+ is the same as 1m, but acrtually even that doesn't matter

I know when shielding pauses and I know what needs to be done after it has been, I've had the letters.

@NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite

The rule has only been '1 metre + mitigating factors' since 4th July. There is no point in speculation. Nobody on MN knows whether it will be this year, next year, or whenever.
Quarantine when entering the UK came in on 15th June, 2 weeks later it was effectively scrapped. Based on that pearl of wisdom it could happen tomorrow for all anyone knows.

I know of a couple of businesses who have told their employees to expect to continue to WFH until March 2021.

Judging by most of the people I saw at the weekend it already has been!

And it's still 2m unless you have mitigations like a mask.

1m is the preferred interpersonal space between strangers in the UK anyway, so I can't see what difference a guideline makes to most situations. You must be crammed in at work, poor you.

Yes, we seem to be naturally predisposed to social distancing in the UK, in public situations at least!

But it's not just amongst strangers, social distancing affects more important situations and relationships. Extended family and friends not being able to interact normally, especially with children. Children unable to play with others if they're not back at school yet. Being able to meet new people and start a romantic relationship. It's like our relationship statuses are paused - not easy to make new friends or partners. Not to mention an awful lot of nice fun stuff that is affected by social distancing - meals out, any kind of group gathering...

Miraculously in late August so that schools can be told to operate normally?, I agree Shielding
@Oblomov20

There will be no big spike. None of the previous spikes have materialised.

Agreed. When the US opened up a month or so back there wasn’t a spike.... The reported figures indicate there is, but that’s fake news....
Areas that are seeing big rises now are the areas where they did a much too brief half hearted lockdown, then released it before they had even seen their first proper influx of cases. California is a little different but given that this state on its own is geographically bigger than the UK, even a one size fits all approach there has not worked.

Comparisons between measures that the US has taken on a whole and their results, with what has happened in this country are meaningless.

Catsmother1 · 13/07/2020 16:10

New Zealand scrapped social distancing when there had been zero cases for a few weeks.

NotShiny · 13/07/2020 18:27

It's still actually 2m. Its only 1m when it's impossible to do 2, like in doorways.
