Does anyone feel really uncomfortable seeing people in masks?

Lissy23 · 11/07/2020 20:38

I do.
It feels to be like their ‘faceless’ beings.
I know this sounds really far fetched, but it’s how I feel.

I also find it very unpleasant being unable to see somebody’s facial expression and to know whether they are smiling at me.
I think I’m on the spectrum, possibly aspergers, I’ve been told by various therapists that it’s a possibility.

How will anyone meet a romantic partner if they can’t see their face? Only their eyes? I know eyes are supposed to be the ‘window the soul’ but I can’t bear not seeing somebody’s entire face.

I went to the pharmacy the other day and the pharmacist was wearing a mask, he was talking to me and I didn’t understand him at all. I didn’t think I relied on lip reading, but I obviously do. He said it twice and I didn’t get it, so I just pretended I had Sad

I know this is all for the greater good. But I feel so depressed and anxious by it all, I already suffer with mental health issues.

I am finding it difficult reading books and watching tv programme or films because they make me tearful and remind me of life before all of this ‘new normal’. I’m wondering if I should speak to a doctor. But I have no idea how to word it.
I’ve already had people calling me selfish and childish (friends and family) for being anxious about wearing a face covering.
It isn’t just other people wearing them, I can’t breathe when I have anything covering my nose and mouth and it often induces a panic attack.

@EnlightenedOwl

To be honest when you see people doing the shopping and what not with their masks and visors on I feel sorry for them. Must be awful to be so terrified.
When I read all your posts Enlightened Owl, I feel sorry for your ignorance.
kenandbarbie · 12/07/2020 14:50

I don't think anything about other people wearing them. I'm not very keen on wearing one myself because I wear glasses and it gets all hot and steamed up. Also I notice people can't read my facial expressions properly which makes communication less easy than usual. But i understand it's for the common good so I don't really mind the bit of inconvenience.

EnlightenedOwl · 12/07/2020 14:55

@bert3400

I live in Spain, it's the law to wear them. It's no big deal. Honestly it really isn't a big deal . Would you prefer to be on a ventilator ? And I can't believe you can't breathe with one on, if Dr and nurses can wear them ALL day then you surely can wear one for a few minutes .
Oh don't be so melodramatic
CaptainMyCaptain · 12/07/2020 15:01

No, it's you being melodramatic @EnlightenedOwl and all the other people who are so sensitive they couldn't possibly wear one. It reeks of childish tantrums.

annabel85 · 12/07/2020 15:12

@YetAnotherSpartacus

"It's against my human rights, it's a muzzle" blah blah, just piss off you idiots. Stay at home and do everyone a favour

Well said!

I don't like it. It makes me sad. But I do it and I have a black one that makes me feel all sinister.

It used to be the Japanese and Chinese tourists that wore them. Now when I put it on I get an earworm of 'Turning Japanese'.

I don't get why people come out with rubbish like that.

As if Covid 19 cares about their human rights.

TwilightPeace · 12/07/2020 15:20

I can’t wait until masks are mandatory. Most people won’t do the right thing until they are forced to do so.
I wear one because I give a shit about other people in society, particularly the vulnerable and elderly.

It’s proven they reduce transmission yet all the precious snowflakes in the U.K. will use any excuse why they should be exempt from wearing one (obviously I’m not referring to those who physically CANT wear one for medical reasons).
I think it has really brought home how selfish the UK is, especially when you see other countries just getting on with it without all the moaning.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 12/07/2020 15:27

I hate wearing a mask, it makes me feel suffocated and when my glasses steam up and I can't see properly it makes me feel blinded and trapped.

But I wear one because I am fully aware that I could be asymptomatic as Far as I know I've never had Covid so could get it at any time, and spread the virus to other people, so out of consideration for people I don't even know I try to do my bit and put up with the discomfort.

Those of you mocking of feeling sorry for mask wearers, it's looking more and more likely that BJ will make it compulsory so you'll have the choice of locking yourself in the house out of spite or wearing a mask.

lljkk · 12/07/2020 15:30

Do all f-masks squish your nose & nostrils down or is it just the home-made cloth ones I have tried on?

Mine don't do that, I've made the type that look like one bra cup.

@EnlightenedOwl

How am I being melodramatic, because I feels masks protect me and people around. Well I'll be melodramatic then, better than being a selfish c&&t Angry

onedayinthefuture · 12/07/2020 15:42

@bert3400 read back on your post about being put on a ventilator. YOU said it. That was nasty and you know it. I've had enough of bullies telling people to stay the fuck at home and telling people their selfish if they don't wear a mask. How DARE you tell anyone what they can and can't do. And there is going to be a huge investigation as to why Spain locked their kids up for 42 days not allowing them outside.

lljkk · 12/07/2020 15:43

The masks I have all look exactly like bra cups -- from 2 different makers. They all squish my nose & nostrils. So does a neck buff. I have a nose like a ski jump, maybe it's my nose. I can breathe thru my mouth, no biggie, but wouldn't want to try to walk briskly.

DH has a Roman proboscis, I'll ask him if he feels his nostrils squished.

Derbygerbil · 12/07/2020 15:43

@onedayinthefuture

You’re right that the majority of people will recover, and from an personal health perspective, those of us who are neither old nor have underlying conditions shouldn’t be especially - living involves some risk after all, and if the world consisted of people exactly like me (fit and healthy in 40s), but I think you’ve massively missed the point.

The problem is that enough people get very sick and die to overwhelm health provision, with the associated impact this will has economically as people react.

How about the mask lot filming you for not wearing one and posting this on social media

Ignore enlightenedowl, he/she likes to come on here and make out coronavirus is just the same as the flu. Been doing it for ages despite the evidence which says otherwise. Has a persecution complex that the government is taking away his/her rights for no reason.

853690525d · 12/07/2020 16:10

The issue is that you don't necessarily know if cases are rapidly rising in your local area, until it's too late.

This is the crux of it.

BruceAndNosh · 12/07/2020 16:13

Here's a thought.... put a mask on and no-one will recognise you on Social Media

This. I've read about ten posts here and am now going to go and do stuff and enjoy my life. A mask won't interfere with any of that. Those sitting on MN frothing and jeering at people who wear masks clearly have no fun stuff to go and do because this is a CRAPPY way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Go and have that precious time with your families today you can't possibly spoil by wearing a mask.

853690525d · 12/07/2020 16:19

And maybe the unenlightenedbaldingvultures amongst us can go for a nice walk or whatever it is you're so keen to be able to do without restrictions. You have far too much time on your hands. MN has never been under threat and it's clearly your principle occupation.

user1471543683 · 12/07/2020 16:28

I hate them especially the fabric ones. It's like everyone looks like Hannibal Lecter!!

Grim faced oversight middle/aged or older couples that supermarket shop together.

What does this even mean? Confused

I do judge people in masks and fear we will raise a generation of ninnies if the compulsory mask demandrs get their way.

What?? Hmm

TaxTheRatFarms · 12/07/2020 16:43

Can you not get over how a mask looks enough to be aware of the health benefits?
I mean “Hannibal Lecter”? “Hostile”? Grin (I put a grin because it’s honestly laughable.)

Would you seriously risk someone else’s health because a mask makes people look a bit weird?
You would risk another lockdown because they make people look like a fictional character?

I’m sorry, but that is bonkers. I honestly despair.

I really feel for people who can’t wear them for medical or psychological reasons but people like these two posters? I’m glad I don’t know anyone this selfish.

BoingBoingyBoing · 12/07/2020 16:47

If the best reason people can come up with for not wearing a mask is 'it looks a bit weird' then it's probably time we all just don them and get on with it. Yes, it is a bit weird, but so is 45k deaths from a virus we hadn't heard about at the start of the year. I think I know which is preferable.

TaxTheRatFarms · 12/07/2020 16:48

I’m particularly offended by those posters as I look very sexy in my mask Wink
