Asking too much of teachers?

It's looking like masks are going to be a requirement in shops and possibly other indoor venues.

Yet teachers are expected to teach - for hours at a time - in confined, poorly ventilated spaces, with no social distancing. They have been told they do not need PPE. If I was still teaching there is no way I'd go into a room crowded with teenagers and not wear a mask at the moment.

Teachers should be allowed as much protection as possible not thrown under a corona bus because Johnson wants them for child care so their parents can go back to work.

I really can't understand why it's going to be compulsory in shops where meetings are fleeting but not in schools which are crowded and have people crammed in for hours.

Does the right of children to go back to school over rule the rights of of school staff (teaching and ancillary) to be as protected as possible?

This means they should be allowed to wear PPE, if they choose, and secondary children should be wearing masks as happens in some other countries. In some countries younger children also have to wear masks in school.

The safety of teachers has been ignored by Johnson and his chums in their urge to get people back to work and the cry of "back to normal" is taken up by those ignorant of the facts about the virus.

Teachers have been made out to be the bad guys almost from the beginning - as can be seen from many bile infested threads on here. They deserve better.

You’re a genius, over, I’m sure that thanks to you leading the way, PE teachers will now be reconsidering their plans to teach football with the kids sat in rows.

Hercwasonaroll · 12/07/2020 18:10

Wow user you've got it sussed.

If only I could use my teeny brain to work out a solution that is safe to fit 34 students in a room without enough desks let alone 2m between me and the students. It's BS like your one example that means you lose all credibility.

You may find that in your sixth form lesson room the layout is changed for you!

DomDoesWotHeWants · 12/07/2020 18:13

@UmbrellaHat

Maybe you should go off with stress. I would in your position. What an irresponsible attitude! If the job is stressing you, resign and get a different one. Don't just dishonestly milk the taxpayers.
Such sympathy to those with mental health issues. But seeing who posted it who would be surprised?

@Whitestick

Well you hardly live in the "real world" of teaching then do you so perhaps you could just fuck off with your snide comments and your faux cheerful exclamation marks. Or, stick some !!!! up your arse.
This!
DomDoesWotHeWants · 12/07/2020 18:34

Yup

Er no thanks, rather not!!!!

Well this has been delightful, I’m glad I work with positive, friendly teachers who come up
with solutions and ideas rather than a lot of you moaning miserable bunch who can’t think for yourselves.

I’m off, enjoy wallowing in your self pity and hardship.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2020 18:48

@OverTheRainbow88

They are GUIDELINES not the written law! And yes I am informed of them, but equally aware they are likely to change, as have most the other guidelines, like no face masks on must to you must wear a face covering on a bus, by September so I am not taking them as gospel.

If I want to stand by my door and squirt some alcohol jel in the kids hands as they walk in , I will do that

If I want to wear a face visor, I will do that.

Going to buy your own jel (sic) are you? Going to defy your headteacher if s/he tells you the government deems masks inappropriate?

I'm delighted to be no longer teaching if it means sharing a workplace with the attitude you exhibit.

ItsSummer · 12/07/2020 18:50

@TennisButterfly

I am not a fan of cleaning the loos but at the end of the day certainly in primary teaching everyone pitches in and you do what you need to do. Even in normal times I have mopped floors and cleaned up pooey toilets just not as often as we do now obviously. I would not support strike action, the last thing the children need is more disruption. We need to keep things as normal as we can for as long as we can and deal with closures for infection control when they come up.
Which is why teachers are in the mess they are.

WHY pitch in like martyrs? Do you not see that by doing this, the cleaner loses a job? Or by you working all hours 'for the children' that you force others to do the same.

Not good at all. And not something to be proud of.

ilovesooty · 12/07/2020 18:53

@Appuskidu

I know I have a very big 6th form classroom with a layout of a U shape where I have 10 kids in the class, I know they can face each other and be at least 6m apart

Lucky you!

Exactly. And she can't see that or acknowledge it.

Cookiecrisps · 12/07/2020 18:58

@OverTheRainbow88 we have all been told by our head teacher that no one is allowed to wear a mask or visor whether they buy it themselves or not, whether they want to wear it or not. In some schools the autonomy has been taken away from staff and you have to do as you are told or else. I’ve seen what the or else is and I can’t afford not to have my income at the moment.

ItsSummer · 12/07/2020 19:04

@noblegiraffe

Herc you’ll know then that you can’t even rely on the previous teacher to have cleaned the whiteboard for you let alone the classroom.

I remember the thread on the staffroom before lockdown where teachers were discussing how filthy their schools are. Schools didn’t even have the money or resources to be cleaned before lockdown and now they’re told they need to be cleaned to an extra high standard with no extra money?

It’s outrageous.

My school STILL doesn’t even supply soap for any sink other than the children’s toilets. Not the classrooms. Not the staff room. Not even the staff toilets. The expectation is that staff buy their own. I just decant some from the children’s soap (then they have to replace it more often, but I’m not giving myself a pay cut by buying soap that they should be supplying - especially now, mid pandemic).
Flagsfiend · 12/07/2020 19:11

@Whitestick

Yes flagsfiend but washing hands often will not be an option for most teachers during the working day. There's hand gel, but just how much of that are we comfortable using and is it as effective as a proper wash? Surgeons don't just use hand gel before an operation.
I'm a teacher too and worry about hand washing, but gloves are not the answer. They provide no protection and are not something that should be suggested in schools. Unless you change them every time you touch something which is clearly impractical. People seem to think gloves are magical (like schools) and with then you can't catch covid, it's not true
phlebasconsidered · 12/07/2020 19:11

I've just had an email saying my classroom will now have a paper towel dispenser instead of a grotty handtowel. Still the same wee sink and tiny bar of soap for 32 kids, but hey - grateful for small mercies! I'm feeling so POSITIVE! Especially since the news that covid lingers in the air for hours. All my windows are going to be open to their full stretch of a copious 5cm and my fire door to the outside propped open. If my runner runs, good luck to him!

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 12/07/2020 19:22

@OverTheRainbow88 - only 10 students ! I am amazed that you are allowed to run a science A level with such a small group

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 12/07/2020 19:25

I dream of having an A Level class of less than 10. I must be too good at recruiting students. I moved from a huge secondary to a small independent and it has made bugger all difference to my A level class sizes

ItsSummer · 12/07/2020 19:26

I wonder how Team Teach will work from September 🤔

Underhisi · 12/07/2020 19:37

Many children that need it will have been in school throughout so it will be going on as usual.

Natalie654321 · 12/07/2020 19:45

I am a secondary school teacher and will be in my final trimester of pregnancy when I go back to school. I have been told I have to go back. I have to teach a normal timetable meaning I will be teaching 120-150 students per day. Extremely worried :(

ohthegoats · 12/07/2020 19:47

If the job is stressing you, resign and get a different one. Don't just dishonestly milk the taxpayers.

When NHS staff were here saying the same things 6 weeks ago, they were being actively encouraged by posters here to go on stress leave. Same taxpayers paying for that.

I notice that none of the people who were very keen on teachers going back into school full time with full classes, yet were either NHS consultants or were married to NHS consultants, seem to have been around much lately. Are they busy catching up on homeschooling? Gone on holiday? Didn't exist?

canigooutyet · 12/07/2020 19:55

Maybe other countries have got systems in place because they looked at how to do this for months. Some have even joined forces to find solutions together. Our company of clowns well here we are. It's only been in the past few weeks that they thought enough about it to start rushing out guidance, contradicting their guidance. Nothing new there.

Another break in the bubble. School transport are also exempt from wearing them. Aren't some of the buses well the same size as public transport ones?

BooseysMom · 12/07/2020 20:05

I'm not a teacher but i don't get how they can say masks not permitted.

DH will be an NQT starting in Sept in a Welsh school with zero distancing. He was so happy when he got the job. Now he's trying really hard to stay positive. He's not at risk but has been hospitalised with pneumonia. I'm terrified.

tisaginthing · 12/07/2020 20:29

I love those posts where the user claims they are leaving then stays for another couple of hours having a tantrum. Grin
