Shielders - what will you be doing from the 1st August?

DH is shielding as we have young children who cant be expected to stay 2m away from him we have been shielding with him, we have all being doing daily walks though from before it was safe. As a family we went to NT property this week and yesterday I went into a shop wear a mask.

We are not sure how much DH is a risk and I’m losing the will to keep up shielding. DD1 is starting school in September.

What level of risk are you currently happy with?

I’m going to take great care, social distance and get on with life. I’m going back to work (I’m a teacher) to get organised for September. I’ve also got a hair appointment booked!

I’ve kept busy at home and enjoyed spending time with my children but I am eager to get back to a normal routine.

cornish009 · 10/07/2020 12:20

I am in a similar position to yourself in that my husband, and hence the household, have been shielding since the middle of March.

I am really frightened at the moment as my logic says that as rules for others have been relaxed, if we then go out, then he is more vulnerable than ever. We have not yet ventured outside of the house or garden, but know the time is coming when we will.

I fully suspect shielding to re-start in the autumn, but am very worried about the children returning to school in Sept, as there will always be some risk, and that risk for somebody shielding is very serious. I do not yet feel ready to take that serious risk, so to be honest I do not know what to do yet.

Redolent · 10/07/2020 12:27

It’s a difficult situation. People often suggest that ‘shielders stay at home and the rest of us crack on’, ignoring that they also have other household members - children, people who work outside the home - who will have to make painful decisions about what to do.

There’s no easy solution. Il

Supposed to go back to work on the 3rd. I'm a rep who visits supermarkets so I'm on the shop floor of several stores per day. I'll be in close proximity to customers and I use the stores toilets. I'm really concerned about going back as I know someone still at work who said social distancing is impossible and some customers still come close to ask her things or reach past her without saying excuse me so she can move first.

WitchDancer · 10/07/2020 12:37

I'll be continuing to stay at home as much as possible. We're not much for socialising anyway, but may go to family houses that we know are minimising contact too.

My biggest fear is that now lockdown has been relaxed the R rate is going to go up again, which obviously increases the risk to shielders.

Lockdownseperation · 10/07/2020 12:45

We are lucky that the R rate is our area is still in the lower side. I don’t work and DH can work from home permanently, so that is a great positive for us.

Like you @cornish009 I think shielding will be unpaused do I keen to do things while we can.

Not sure yet. Work may let me stay home for a bit longer to see how things pan out. Will keep food shopping online and avoiding people Grin

Cloudburstagain · 10/07/2020 13:17

On 1 Sept as a shielded teacher I am expected back in school, moving into different rooms and buildings. Outside of work I will stay and home and go for some quiet walks. No shops or cafes as the risk if I caught it is the same to my health.

SistemaAddict · 10/07/2020 14:02

Staying home. Lone parent of 3. The risk seems greater now than at the beginning now that most things are open and people are carrying on as normal pretty much. I've been out for a local walk a handful of times but people don't keep their distance. It would be nice if there was a shielded hour for shopping and walking.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 10/07/2020 14:07

I'll be going to work, because I have no choice, but other than that I'll continue shielding. I won't be going out socialising or to meet other people.

Jumblebumblemess · 10/07/2020 14:12

My Mum is shielding and her consultant and GP have both said she should continue shielding. She has severe kidney disease and also heart issues and is terrified of catching the virus.... although she is suffering with her wellbeing as she doesn't want to be shielding at home all by herself until/if a vaccine comes along. Her mental health is suffering. I have told her to take her time and think about it all.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 10/07/2020 15:32

I think shielding people no longer have to be socially distant with people livkng with you so non shielding can go out.

This came into play from the 6th July as the NHS ICU are currently not at risk of being overrun but it’s not necessarily safe for the person shielding.

Dh has had enough anyway so will be starting to go out sensibly by Aug. Still wfh though.

SistemaAddict · 10/07/2020 17:13

Ds's classmates are all being signed up for different summer activity camp weeks and I feel bad that he can't do the same. What's the point of bubbles at school if they are mixing socially with children from other schools the week before they are due to be in their bubbles? Am I missing something here?
I'm fed up of invitations to play dates and meet ups in the very busy park and hate having to explain over and over that I'm shielded and can't risk it as my GP has said to continue to shield.

There's no point to bubbles in schools, it's just Tory BS to make it sound better.

Chocl8 · 10/07/2020 17:53

It’s my DD shielding, so we all have been. We won’t change much - no shops, cafes, visitors, holidays etc. Only thing is that my DH will probably go back to work some days. Feeling that should be OK since works seems to very careful. We are very cautious because DDs health is not good anyway. She is home schooled due to health but I would definitely worry if she had to go back in Sept. I think that shielders still should be as careful as possible.

tobee · 10/07/2020 22:10

We're still unsure. Every now and then dh (the shieldee!) says he's had enough and done his bit, then, when it comes to it, the fighting talk goes out the window Grin. Don't blame him! He's been having 3 x a week in centre dialysis but has only gone for a few walks at quiet times; he's on one now.

He can mostly work from home.

It's me and 2 adult dc who are the shielders. I'm fine but the dc are finding it hard. Especially ds, 21, finished university prematurely and not sure how to look for work etc.
