Me and my baby visited my mum on Wednesday and she has just told me she’s tested positive for covid.

Do I need to get tested? My older children are due back from their dads next week, do I have to tell them to stay there? Do me and the baby have to self isolate for 14 days? There’s so much bloody information out there now I can’t make head nor tail of what to do and I’m quite an anxious person anyway so getting myself panicked. I need someone to talk to me in lamens terms about what to do now.

I am staggered at the thought of her still going to work at employers say so if she has tested positive for Covid? As pp asked, was it definitely a test for current infection rather than an antibody test? If so, I’m absolutely appalled

Wait. What? Your mum has tested positive AND she's still at work...in a healthcare setting? What madness is this?

Looneytune253 · 10/07/2020 16:32

You don't need a pos test just yet. But you do need to isolate for 14 days and if either of you develop symptoms then get a test. If you can get your kids to stay with their dad that might be best for the 14 days.

It will be an antibody test

Namechangex10000 · 10/07/2020 19:47

Yeah she got the results AT work.

I’m waiting for her to tell me what test is what but even if it was an antibody test according to the info I can find, there’s no proof wether you HAVE it or have HAD it, there’s no proof to say that makes you immune AND you can still pass it on, surely you would still need to isolate just in case??? It’s the “guidance” that is making me anxious, none of it seems to make any sense and it’s making me crazy. I almost feel like more people will end up mentally unwell from this than physically!

If it’s an antibody test then you don’t have to isolate. All that means is that she’s had the virus at some times in the past and has produced antibodies to it.

@MrsSpenserGregson

First thing: go on the NHS website and book / request a test for you and the baby.

Then speak to the kids' dad.

Is your mum OK?

This is wrong info. The OP should not get a test unless she or her baby get symptoms. She does need to self isolate for 14 days from the day she was in contact with the person who tested positive. If she or the baby develops symptoms then they would get a test.

Do you know if she had a swab test or a blood test? If it was a blood test, it would be an antibody test, in which case theres no need to worry. I honestly can't believe they wouldn't have sent her home immediately if she'd tested positive for a Covid.

If it's an antibody test, this means she had Covid in the past. the NHS are carrying out antibody testing for all staff that want it at the moment as part of a research programme, so it sounds like it could well be that. They don't normally do swab tests for Covid unless you request one because you have symptoms.

Umm no if you have antibodies that means you had the virus over 14 days ago so you are no longer contagious. It definitely sounds like she had the antibody test. I can't see any Health care work setting allowing her to stay at work with an actual positive coronavirus test.
PennyRoyal · 11/07/2020 10:47

OP - did you find out what kind of test was positive?
