How do you feel about restaurant staff wearing gloves?

Just looking at a local restaurant's info about opening soon. They mention staff will wear masks and gloves.

Now masks I can understand, provided they don't fiddle with them constantly like much of the general public seem to do, and understand correct removal and disposal.

However gloves I am uncomfortable with. They seem to be used instead of hand hygiene. To be effective, surely they need to be changed between customers, with hand hygiene before and after.

The website also mentions hand sanitiser in the bathrooms. Why is this necessary when there is soap and water? Again I think people seem to feel sanitiser is superior to hand washing and this is just encouraging that notion.

Perhaps I'll just stay home Grin

When I visited the Middle East last October I was taken a back at first by serving staff wearing gloves. However, watching how they changed gloves after every prep and service to a table I thought it was much more hygienic than our restaurants and so I'd welcome this. I would say that after visiting that particular country and some others in Europe that I don't think we have particularly good hygiene or clean facilities in this country. Hoping situation opens peoples eyes to how lazy we've become.

I saw this in the pub we went to on Saturday and it made me uneasy. Frankly, I'd rather staff washed their hands regularly then cross contaminate with what will probably be the same gloves on all shift.

Ew gross. There is NO WAY that any business will want the extra costs or logistical nightmare (or waste disposal) of enough gloves to actually make this hygienic. Which means changing your gloves really frequently, washing your hands in between and then replacing with a fresh pair.

Much better to just wash hands all the time, which you do in hospitality anyway! To the point they are soooo dry and cracked.

I’d rather they didn’t, people who wear gloves tend not to sanitise or change them often (I have observed this with checkout operators - those in gloves don’t sanitise those with bare skin do). Gloves don’t prevent cross contamination. Bare handed with frequent hand washing (ideally) or sanitising is preferable.

I keep seeing staff in my local coop wearing gloves, and it drives me mad. I've never seen them change gloves between customers, so any germs are just being passed around.

In a restaurant, I'd rather see staff wash their hands between customers than wear gloves. I think wearing gloves all the time gives a false sense of security, unless they are changed between customers (gloves off, sanitise hands, new gloves on), they won't do very much at all.

Masks, fine - it protects other people from you, but gloves, id just wonder about their hygiene practices.

I work in hospitality and we won't be using gloves just masks and meticulous hygiene.Sanitizer after soap and water seems ok.

HolyMolasses · 08/07/2020 22:04

If you wash your hands properly you do not need sanitiser.

It wouldn't hurt when you have turned the taps off.Last time I went to the loo in a shopping centre they had it outside in a no touch pump so when you left the loo building you could use it.
I always say there is no substitute.for soap and water though.

HolyMolasses · 09/07/2020 09:17

I have observed too many people opting to use sanitiser over soap and water where both options are available, even in hospital where it is possible to turn off the taps without touching it with your hand. My colleagues are the only people I see washing their hands correctly.
