How much contact has your primary school aged child had with their teacher?

Please can you tell me how much contact your primary school aged child has had with their teacher since March. I'm specifically asking for kids not yet back in school and not about emails with work set etc, but actual direct contact (telephone, zoom etc etc) with their teacher.

Year 4 at first school (so leaving), no direct contact and no work marked. They have started sending well done messages if you send things in, for the first few weeks there was nothing

DannyDonut · 07/07/2020 22:34

Absolutely Heehaw. Scotland

elliejjtiny · 07/07/2020 22:34

My year 4 and year 2 children have had a phone call most weeks from their teacher who speaks to me and them. I get a phone call from a TA to ask how my year 1 child is getting on but nobody speaks to him directly. My year 4 child has had 1 zoom meeting with his class and my year 2 child has had a weekly zoom meeting.

GizzaNuther · 07/07/2020 22:36

Mine's in Y4. She can use the class group chat stream to talk to her teacher each school day if she wants to. The teacher also answers any questions they have about the work or if they're worried about anything. They also get comments and feedback about the work they've handed in.

The teacher has phoned 3 times to speak to DD to ask how she's getting on and to check that she's okay.

DD is in Y4.

Year 6, messages almost daily and learning videos via Class Dojo, plus a phone call. Some of the messages have checked on the whole family's wellbeing and invited parents to contact them for support if they need it.

cakeallday · 07/07/2020 22:38

That should say plus ONE phone call during this time (not one per day!).

georgedawes · 07/07/2020 22:38

I've been a bit confusing with my question about direct contact, I appreciate it may be harder for younger children to interact on the phone etc. I've had no contact with teachers other than receiving work to do. This is not marked by the teacher.

Sounds similar to us - using class dojo, work is set daily (maths) and weekly but it’s not mandatory or marked. Kids can upload pictures/video to dojo of things/work they’ve done and the teacher will comment but they’re not reaching out directly to my child, or me.

chloworm · 07/07/2020 22:43

None at all. Year 4. No work marked or checked.

thanksamillion · 07/07/2020 22:43

Year 5 one 2 minute phone call with me, didn't want to speak to DD. Two zoom calls with the whole class since half term but just chat and DD DD didn't enjoy it (dominated by a couple of loud children showing off their fancy tech in their bedrooms) so didn't join the second one. Work set, almost all sheets from Twinkle, but no uploading it or feedback so feels a bit pointless.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 07/07/2020 22:44

Wow my ds's school has been really good then! He's year 5.
Class zoom meeting 1 evening a week with his teacher and deputy head for a social night, they've played bingo, done scavenger hunt ect
Teacher has phoned here 3 times.
Every 3 weeks a teacher or governed has come to the house with reading books, star of the week certificates, prizes.
There's a class blog where the children can post anything they're doing at home be it work, gardening, walks out, showing off pets, their teacher and the teacher they're having in September comment on every single post.
Work is set daily online, the children can ask questions via the blog or can email school for help.

georgedawes · 07/07/2020 22:45

That sounds incredible thehog.

Year 4 fortnightly zoom meetings, year 6 weekly zoom meetings. Also plenty of communication (daily messages at least) on teams. Full timetable of work set, some of it marked, and some work we photograph to put on teams and the teachers can give feedback on that.

ceeveebee · 07/07/2020 22:46

Year 3. Had 1 zoom class call in April, 1 in May, then from mid June they have had them weekly. No “personal” contact, no emails to ask how she is etc. Work is set but not submitted/marked

Uhoh2020 · 07/07/2020 22:46

From lockdown to returning on the 8th June (reception) absolutely none. Eldest in high school I've had a call from his form tutor once a week (except in the holidays) checking on how he Is, how we are as a family, and feedback from his other teachers about work hes submitted

LalaDanielle · 07/07/2020 22:47

I am surprised hearing this and it is a shame there hasn't been much contact. I'm a teacher in London and we phone families to talk to the children each week and contact them daily through emails to discuss their online learning. It's a shame because there was no guidance on this for schools so think it's down to individual schools

ceeveebee · 07/07/2020 22:49

(Oh and in contrast, the cub leader has done a weekly zoom meeting every week without fail with a different activity every time, and has hand delivered badges to the house! He works full time in a supermarket as well so he’s an absolute star!)

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 07/07/2020 22:50

None. I’ve been emailing the school and have pointed out that they don’t have any way of knowing whether DD (Y5) is alive or dead. They certainly don’t have any evidence that she’s OK and not being starved or beaten. They’re sending work but it isn’t being marked if she sends it back.

formerbabe · 07/07/2020 22:50

3 phone calls since start of lockdown

georgedawes · 07/07/2020 22:50

Yes cubs have been amazing here too. And they are volunteers.

Have your school responded professor?

OP posts:
MoreW1ne · 07/07/2020 22:52

How often have you called the school to speak with them? Do they answer when you call or is it answer machine? When you've emailed with your concerns regarding contact how long has it been before a response from them?

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 07/07/2020 22:52

Music teachers, on the other hand, have been excellent: they set up on Zoom in March and she’s had her weekly lessons ever since.

georgedawes · 07/07/2020 22:53

Same here too with music teachers professor.

I had a holding email a month ago and a message from the deputy head, not addressing any of my points (but banging on about Chromebooks for Yr 6, which I hadn’t asked about and am not interested in) last week. I used to think the school was quite good.
