Furlough scheme and redundancy!

Hi,

I recently came across an article and I wanted to know if anyone has any idea if it's true.

www.hrkatha.com/news/jobs-of-furloughed-employees-not-at-risk-in-the-uk/

It's basically what the company I work for is planning on doing, Making us all redundant as soon as they have to start paying anything towards it.

The contract runs out however in November.... Surely it cheaper for the company to pay everyone 20% wages until the contract ends, than it would be to have to repay the 80%from everyone for the last 4 months?

Or am I just being stupid?

I'm watching this with interest, I don't know the answer but I'm furloughed and hoping to be made redundant.

Companies are using the furlough scheme as a cheap way of getting off staff. Depending on their length of service, staff will be entitled to up to 12 weeks’ notice of redundancy which is often more than their statutory redundancy payment. Employers are using the furlough scheme to fund most of the notice payment so they only have to cover the statutory redundancy payment. That’s why companies are starting the redundancy process now and not October!

Small businesses won't have the funds to pay the twenty percent if no income is coming in. It will be difficult times for some.

Sadly, there will be companies and individuals seeking to abuse the chancellor's generous schemes for their own benefit, hardly surprising.
