Taste disturbances and sore mouth

Has anyone else experienced this?

At the end of March I had very mild but noticeable breathing issues for a few days (tight, restricted breathing with odd 'glass splinters' feeling). No cough, no temperature. Taste disturbances but not a complete loss of taste/smell. A few weeks later I woke up with a very sore mouth. Cracked lips and sore around the inside, and feeling dry. This lasted several days, maybe a week. Since then, I've had periodic episodes of having a tight chest, odd taste and sore mouth (but not as bad as the initial time). I also feel unusually tired.
I was asked to have a Covid test through the Zoe app due to symptoms I'd reported in early May, and again early June (both negative). Obviously if I'd had it in late March, a test is highly unlikely to be positive now.
Has anyone experienced similar symptoms (especially with the mouth?). The Zoe app does now suggest that a sore mouth could be a symptom. I'm wondering whether to try and discuss it with my GP, not least in case it's not Covid and something else needs investigating. If there's a chance it could have been covid, I'd really like to have an antibody test (and if possible donate plasma).
I don't want to bother the GP unnecessarily, and my symptoms are mild and manageable. Just interested to see if anyone's experienced anything similar really.

I think you should phone your GP - she/he will be able to offer a telephone consultant. They can take it from there. It sounds uncomfortable and also if you are feeling tired a lot you might have anaemia or something which can be treated with iron tablets.

Thanks @BBCONEANDTWO, yes I think that's probably a good idea. I did wonder if my iron levels might be low. The weird taste and feeling in my mouth is also a bit disconcerting.

Is it a metallic taste? That is one of the symptoms for iron deficiency - good luck and just get on the phone to your GP tomorrow first thing!

DD and I both had an odd virus in February just after half term. She had high temperatures and a horrendous sore throat and head and then she started saying everything tasted funny, her tongue and mouth felt funny and sore and she got cuts all over her mouth. I also had the terrible sore throat and fever, horrendous headaches, stomach cramps andd diarrhoea and then I lost my sense of taste. We obviously didn't know at the time about covid-19 but looking back now we're wondering if it could have been.

I had several really painful mouth ulcers and cuts pop up in my mouth during the first 36 hours. My lips also got unbelievably dry to the point they were bleeding.

The fever went in a couple of days and my breathing was close to normal in about a week, but it was probably another week again again before I could eat even a plain yoghurt or soup without wincing in pain. And at least a month before I next actually enjoyed food.

That was mid-March (confirmed by a positive test) and I still get periodic chest issues, sore mouth and dampened sense of smell. It isn't low iron in my case because that's been checked since.

That's interesting @caffeinebuzz. When my mouth was first sore back in April, it was bleeding when I brushed my teeth (from inside the bottom of my lips, not the gums). I have previously had low iron levels though, so I guess that's something that needs to be checked again.

Just by way of a follow up, the GP thinks from my symptoms that I may have had Covid and is sending me for a blood test for antibodies and a full blood count. He warned that the antibody test is not necessarily conclusive (which I knew anyway).

Late to the party but have you been breathing through your mouth at night? I get this is there is dust in the room I’m sleeping in because I end up struggling to breath through my nose. If I’m doing it for a few dats in a row I’m in agony.

fadingfast · 08/07/2020 19:45

@Loveinatimeofcovid yes I do tend to mouth breathe at night, but I have done for a long time and never had this type of inflammation in my mouth before.
