DD working in busy pub this weekend, I'm anxious...

She works in a busy chain pub in the town centre and will be working this weekend. Today they had back to work briefing this afternoon where they talked them through what to expect this weekend. She said they've been told to expect coach parties from Wales as pubs aren't opening there yet: nothing against Wales or the people living there (we have family and friends there and used to live there) but surely anyone (from anywhere in the U.K.) who goes to the trouble of booking a coach party is unlikely to just want a quiet couple of drinks? I'm getting a bad feeling about this, and DD and her work mates, most of whom are teenagers/early 20s, are dreading it.
I think it's a terrible idea to open this Saturday but I also understand that we have to ease back to some normality. I can be a bit of an anxious person so maybe I'm worrying myself unnecessarily... please reassure me it will be ok!
I'll be thinking of everyone having to work this weekend, and wish you all an uneventful first day of pub opening.

Dd is starting tomorrow too (also hospitality), she’s been in for a training day today. They seem well prepared, well staffed & are all really looking forward to getting back to work!

Maybe you didn't intend it this way, but your OP implies that you're worried purely because of the possibility of people coming over from Wales.

There's still a five mile travel ban in place here, so I doubt many coach firms will be willing to break the law.

iloveredwine · 03/07/2020 18:07

All the pubs near me you have to book a table to get in so limiting the amount of people in at once. Table service and contactless pay on an app on customers phone so no risk to staff

Not what I intended at all, I said it it would be a worry from anywhere in the U.K. It is a lively pub and it gets its share of heavy drinkers even on a normal weekend. We'll see how it goes. Hopefully they will have good security.

I think you're coming in for some very unfair criticism on this thread, OP. I agree the government has rushed into reopening pubs in an unmanaged way. Having the first open day as a Saturday is a stupid and reckless idea. Is your DD working full time or is she a student earning some extra money during the holidays? If the latter, is it essential for her to work? If your DD is in her teens or twenties, she's unlikely to get a severe case of Covid herself (assuming no health conditions), but given her job it would be sensible to avoid meeting elderly or vulnerable family members indoors for the time being.

Llamazoom · 03/07/2020 22:45

With infection rates quite low in most places at the moment I wouldn’t worry about Covid as much as I would worry about drunk men, fights and violence. They will be expecting all sorts so I imagine the police will be out and about and hopefully extra security on doors.

I think it’s pretty clear that the OP has nothing against the Welsh!!! The point is that there are some people (probably a lot of people!) who are intent on becoming completely sh*t-faced tomorrow and things are likely to get pretty ugly in many town centres.

I am sorry but it really says something about the U.K. that schools are closed, children’s playgrounds, gyms, etc - but you can go and get drunk and forget about everything and everyone!! Yep, that’s the number one priority for our government and a lot of people.

Davodia · 03/07/2020 23:04

Does she really need the job? I’d be encouraging my DD to quit because it’s too risky, especially if it’s only a part time job and she lives at home so doesn’t rely on the income.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 03/07/2020 23:04

Drunkenness will be a bigger problem than Covid this weekend. It'll be like mad Friday I would think. Possibly x 5 or 10.

dogseggs · 04/07/2020 20:20

There's been a massive fight already and police have arrived and made a few arrests. Who'd have thought it? Hmm
DD messaged to say she is alright, thankfully. She really needs a job to support her through her studies and normally loves her job, but we will have to look at other options if this carries on.
