Young man dies of blood clot through being sedentary in lockdown. very sad.

Barbara Kobson, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “This is a really shocking case; I’ve not heard of someone so young dying of DVT. Normally it’s people over the age of 60, however if you’re sitting for long periods and not moving then the blood flow in the leg is going to slow down. If people are furloughed at home they need to keep active.”

That is really awful.

I hope people read it and remember to exercise regularly.

Orangeblossom78 · 02/07/2020 09:04

It has definitely made me think about making sure the DC have daily exercise- they are getting a lot of work on their laptops from school and with the weather not do good have been reluctant to go out.

What a sad, sad waste of young life.

Even staying the fuck at home is not "safe". So you may as well get on with living well while you can and take your chances

I'm trying to get more active again. I ran a trail half-marathon shortly before lockdown. I did well at the start and just fizzled by late May. With no end in sight, and certainly no hint of normality until at least September, no races to train for etc, I scraped 4 runs in June. I'd normally have done another HM then and have would have some 10ks coming up shortly. I need external motivation and it's so hard driving myself 3.5 months into a void of existance where bin day is a weekly exciting feature.

And still we're stuck in groundhog day where I'm pointing out that Covid 19 is not the only hazard in the world.

Orangeblossom78 · 02/07/2020 09:10

It may help if the gyms and pools could open again to help people stay fit, I too find the motivation of that very helpful. And of course it helps in the bad weather to have somewhere to go.

It's got harder and harder as going for a bloody walk has worn really thin. The guidance on play areas is bonkers and great ammunition for bureaucrats to look at it and give up without trying.

Recently I was using zoom and failed to recognise a child. Partly a change in lockdown gair, but mainly their face shape had totally changed. This child was so active running around playing football all the time, and the lockdown lifestyle and being stuck at home while siblings get school/ nursery has done them no favours.

Lockdown is causing so much mental and physical harm to young people. It's a slow time bomb that's been created because thousands (and far more than have ever come to lasting harm through Covid 19) will not bounce back easily from this.

AuntieStella · 02/07/2020 09:14

I need external motivation

Try virtual races. RunThrough have made all their events virtual (and they have a good online community), the Race Organiser is doing some interesting looking scrambles (run with clues, selfies for evidence) and if you want a big challenge, virtual Run To The Stones is next week

nether · 02/07/2020 09:17

Yes, DC who are shielding have had it really tough. The guidance changed, to permit going out for exercise with household for the first time only 3 weeks ago. That so many people no longer keep 2m away does make it hard to find anywhere at all for a change of scenery.

Orangeblossom78 · 02/07/2020 09:29

This young man was also a fitness trainer so he obviously found his work motivating and struggled at home. If someone with that level of fitness to start with struggled then think of all the other young people sat at home getting more unhealthy and unfit Sad

Fucking thats shocking!!! I am definitely not moving enough so it’s a wake up call for sure.

Orangeblossom78 · 02/07/2020 09:31

There is also this thing about sports being 'risky' now isn't there, Bojo was on about cricket balls being a 'disease vector' recently and I saw something shaming young people in Scotland for playing football in lockdown as well. So many young people play team sports to keep fit.

There needs to be some common sense around e.g. not banning it but washing hands after for example.

NHS does these videos which I might try and use, can't see the DC being interested though and Joe Wicks might be of use I guess for them - not the same as being out enjoying yourself though.

Just playing / climbing /playgrounds is so helpful for the younger ones

Of course which have also been closed Sad

It's sad.

Sadly the suicide figures during this period will no doubt make grim reading. Tragically, my niece's husband committed suicide late April. He was in his 30's..... whilst the country focuses on Covid, many people are dying from other causes. He lost his job early on when lock down commenced and could see no way out. He had mental health issues anyway but the lock down made things much worse - sadly as a physically fit man he wouldn't have died from the virus.

His children now have to make sense of that.

BadAlice · 02/07/2020 09:44

In order to get a DVT without any other risk factors you’d have to be VERY sedentary for an extended period of time. Whilst it’s very sad, I don’t think we can exclusively blame lockdown.

DishingOutDone · 02/07/2020 10:00

I'm sure that his case was unusual a fit young man developing DVT in a few weeks!

WaffleCash · 02/07/2020 10:08

You could just as well say gaming was responsible for his death. It sounds like he was sat in one position for extended periods of time much like you would be on a long haul flight. It's scare mongering to say it's caused by lack of exercise, just moving about your living accommodation is enough to prevent dvt for young, otherwise healthy people.

swimkiwipanda · 02/07/2020 10:11

My gym instructor committed suicide.

MinesaBottle · 02/07/2020 10:16

Christ that’s awful swimwikipanda

He may have had an undiagnosed condition like thrombophilia which causes the blood to clot more easily. MIL had it and it was only discovered after she got a DVT on a flight. It’s genetic so DH and his sisters all got tested - luckily he doesn’t have it.

ssd · 02/07/2020 10:23

This is so very sad.
Thanks for pointing that out op, I'll make sure ds actually moves at some point and not stay in front of his pc all day.
My thoughts are with this young man's family and friends.

ohthegoats · 02/07/2020 10:26

Yeah this is a proper weird freak one, rather than something that is going to be common due to lockdown. I can't read the article becaue paywall, but if this person was a sports coach and didn't know about NOT being sedentary, then I dunno... I feel there is something Darwin award going on here. Harsh though that is.

I had a DVT at 26 and would have died had I not got to hospital (also had clots in my lungs). I had an unknown (at the time) blood clotting protein that had only even been discovered 6 months earlier (in general I mean, not in me). Turns out all my mum's side of the family have it, but would never have known. Causes repeat miscarriage (not in our family), causes DVT (yes in our family).

LockdownLou · 02/07/2020 10:30

This is so sad. Poor young man and his family.

Makes you realise how important the daily walk is. I’m also on the contraceptive implant which I believe also increases the risk.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 02/07/2020 10:36

Its very sad.

But he had a DVT because he was living a sedentary lifestyle. There has still been plenty of opportunity to be active during lockdown, yes not gyms and swimming pools but running/walking/yoga/pilates/bodyweight excercise/dance can be done, swimming in the sea, kayaking, paddle boarding. Most gym people I know have bought their own weights. Sport has been allowed for a while so things like tennis, football, frisby whatever. If lockdown hadnt been there and hes been sat playing games all day he would have still got a DVT.

Its a wake up call, we need to make sure we are moving enough. But thats up to us as individuals

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 02/07/2020 10:38

I mean just walking around the house, cooking dinner, making a cup of tea. Getting up to go the toilet should be enough. He was clearly very very sedentary, there has been plenty of opportunity to move around enough to prevent DVT. Young people are not at risk of DVT because of lockdown

Orangeblossom78 · 02/07/2020 10:46

Thank you for the comments, reassuring to know. I hope this did not some across as scaremongering, it seems to be rare. Flowers
