So, if Tom Hanks asking his fellow Americans to wear a mask encourages just one of the idiots out here to put on a mask in future, I'm all for it.

I agree with this. Maybe if there weren’t such a void created by a government who is AWOL there would be no need for celebrities to step in and use their influence to try to save lives.

I like Tom Hanks, but not entirely sure of his qualifications on this one....:

I assume because he and Rita Wilson had Covid and understand better than most how hideous it is, they would be well placed to advise people might want to avoid spreading it.

if forest Gump says so, who am I to quibble?

If Captain Sully says so, it must be a good plan.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 01/07/2020 20:37

It's not compulsory to wear one in the UK.
So I don't.
If it ever became so, then I would.
In the meantime, I've got one for if I ever go on public transport as it's needed then.
I've stuck to the rules rigidly the entire time, I still social distance even though loads of other people seem to have given up.
You don't have to wear a mask in public.
Not here anyway.

@HeIenaDove

What on Earth is all that about?

Defenestratethecat · 01/07/2020 20:43

He's absolutely right.

amusedtodeath1 · 01/07/2020 20:45

Love Tom Hanks, one of the good guys, right or wrong (and he's probably talking about the US, which is a different ball game.), He's only trying to help.

gumball37 · 01/07/2020 20:50

@goldfinchfan

Him and his wife have had COvid...they caught it while in Austrailia so perhaps that is why he spoke up
My thoughts exactly. He has better first hand experience than damn near most of us
TheLastSaola · 01/07/2020 20:54

Masks can be a helpful additional measure (though probably a fairly limited utility).

But in my borough only 0.007% of people developed covid last week, so I think they're overkill at the moment.

PickAChew · 01/07/2020 20:58

Those of you who wear gloves, how do they protect you more than just washing or sanitising your hands?

agentnully · 01/07/2020 21:14

He's allowed his opinion and if his fans agree and starting wearing them that'll be great.

People here are allowed their opinion, too, so if they don't want to wear one that's great (not really, but there you go).

Masks will become mandatory in public. They've only been trotting out the they-don't-help line so far due to the PPE shortage.

If nothing else, wearing a mask will help cut transmission in those that are asymptomatic but still circulating in public. Or the selfish twats that feel ill at the start of the infection but still go out (like my neighbours).

Yes, they're uncomfortable (how do you think medical staff feel having to wear them all day?). Yes, many people are fuckwits that pull them down to talk (not to mention one I've seen that cut a hole in the centre of it!) or keep touching with hands that are possibly contaminated.

However, if it helps save ONE SINGLE LIFE by lowering the chance of infection it's worth it.

People not willing to wear a mask in public without a really valid reason need to stop and think about the lives lost so far and maybe take a moment to wonder how they'd feel losing the person closest to them to this disease.

Pluckedpencil · 01/07/2020 21:37

Here in Italy now it's 32 degrees and people are working in shops in masks. It is HOT and shit for them, but we are in single digit deaths now and are allowed to go on holiday and the borders are open, so I'll take the masks, thanks. You only need to wear them indoors and when there is less than a two metre distance, with a bit of planning you can almost avoid them. I feel for people in retail and hospitality though. Actually I'd prefer to make them the exception without masks, and anyone coming into their workplace has to wear one.

PicsInRed · 01/07/2020 21:39

Tom Hanks for quality acting? ✅

Tom Hanks for quality medical advice? ❌

BigChocFrenzy · 01/07/2020 21:44

I cba with what any sleb says

However, most epidemiologists and virologists around the world recommend mask-wearing atm

Most countries in Europe have made "face coverings" mandatory in shops, public transport etc

Asian countries with mask-wearing have had v low infections & deaths

So why not for Brits too ?

HeIenaDove · 01/07/2020 22:38

Im quite happy not to go anywhere where mask wearing is required. Including the high street. Im already starting to tell people/family that i wont be doing Christmas presents this year for adults or children. Cant take the stress of that on top. This might finally give me the impetus to get to grips with online shopping.

The pubs opening this Saturday might also give me the chance to play with my newer phone and its camera.

Because i bet the drunks not wearing masks and not social distancing wont get anywhere near the hard time for it that people with medical conditions on buses have got.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 01/07/2020 23:19

So why not for Brits too ?

No idea, but I know I'm not wearing one unless I have to and then I will.

BilboBercow · 01/07/2020 23:55

I wouldn't say he knows naff all given he's actually had Covid19. I also think he's directing his message to the US where he lives as the advice has very strongly been to wear a mask. It's mandatory in some states. However Trump has unfolded politicised it and stated people wearing masks are doing so because they don't like him. Fucking idiot.

HeresMe · 02/07/2020 07:43

He and his wife have had covid19. I'm more likely to listen to him than keyboard warriors on internet forums who have no medical training or first hand experience of the virus.

The village idiot could have had covid doesn't make them a expert or even worth listening too.

And someone isn't a keyboard warrior just because they don't agree with what you say.

Breckenridged · 02/07/2020 07:51

Well said agentnully.

whiteblue · 02/07/2020 08:25

I'm in the Middle East and everyone has to wear one in public.
Some people on here are saying they wouldn't wear one. Why not? Not a challenge, I'm just interested. They protect you, and others from you.
Before anyone says they are too hot, it's109 degrees here today and we wear them and it's perfectly manageable. They are cheap and offer protection.

I was wondering that too - did you post on the wrong thread?

quiteathome · 02/07/2020 08:54

I have been following a scientist on twitter, she has done a lot of work on the wearing of masks/ face coverings and they do reduce infection rates. They are definitely worth wearing. I suspect we will eventually be told to wear them in shops etc.

I don't understand why people would rather get their information from Tom Hanks though.

SimonJT · 02/07/2020 09:00

There was a post from Britney recently wearing a mask while with her partner, some people were calling her stupid for wearing a mask in said photo because they live together.

She pointed out that as a great number of people will see the photo she has a responsibility to set a good example where she can as she recognised that some people are more likely to listen to someone they ‘know’ rather than a scientist, government official etc.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/07/2020 09:32

Tom Hanks, Oscar award winning virologist.

The situation across the USA is far more fragmented than the UK. The UK is concentrating on social distancing and keeping as much as possible outdoors as the primary form of virus control. Public mask wearing is in the majority of situations just virtue signalling, security blankets with the majority of masks being of low efficacy, and worn badly often in a way that encourages cross-contamination in an environment that was already low risk.

In US states advocating business as usual, that is a very different situation.

BilboBercow · 02/07/2020 17:54

Public mask wearing is virtue signalling? Have we been invaded by r/TheDonald?

knittingaddict · 02/07/2020 17:58

Public mask wearing is virtue signalling? Have we been invaded by r/TheDonald?

I was listening to a podcast saying that they thought mumsnet might be the birth place of the UK Qanon-like conspiracy movement.

I think they were joking. Hmm

knittingaddict · 02/07/2020 18:03

The village idiot could have had covid doesn't make them a expert or even worth listening too.

Well TH isn't a village idiot, so that's irrelevant.

And someone isn't a keyboard warrior just because they don't agree with what you say.

It's not a question of views or opinions, it's science. The scientists say masks make a difference to spreading the virus. It might be small, but what's the harm in using them?
