Can I pick up a quarantining friend from the Airport

On July 4 a friend is arriving from Denmark. He has to quarantine for 14 days by law. Can I pick him up from the airport and drive him to where he will be staying? I searched online but couldn't find the answer.

Not sure
I guess no different to home getting a taxi

Yes, I'm pretty sure you can OP. I think this is one of those grey areas, because how else would he get where he was going? Private taxi or public transport, unless he's prepared to hire a car, which would be the only way he could guarantee social distancing for the next two weeks. But there is no rule that says incoming travellers have to hire a car, ergo there must be an assumption that they will need to travel to their destination in other ways!

Thanks. I am definitely confused by the current status of the rules. It's a good point that if they are allowed to take a taxi then I must be allowed to pick them up...surely.

From 4th July two households will be able to meet up in any setting with social distancing measures. So, you will need to apply these measures within the car if you wish to pick the friend up from the airport and take them to the place they'll be staying.

I wouldn't have thought so if they are meant to be self-isolating?
I would think they would be expected to take their own car to and from the airport. But I guess it would be like public transport: Only use public transport if you have no other option. If you do use public transport, wear something that covers your nose and mouth and stay 2 metres apart from other people. Link -Travel to UK

The two household rule would not apply here - they shouldn't be mixing with anyone at all for the 14 days.

Make sure he’s sitting in a seat furtherest away from you. Both wear masks. Have windows open. Ideally he should be facing the open window.

I first off thought this was a really stupid question OP but you actually have an interesting point. The obvious one is ‘no way, they are in quarantine’ but actually, how else do they get to their destination? Take precautions and do it I say. Better than public transport and equally a taxi (who will then go round picking up other fares and therefore a higher spread risk)

Zoomintheroom · 01/07/2020 16:44

Can he not hire a car? I would have thought that's the safest way and doesn't break any guidelines.

Zoomintheroom No driving license.

We will just go for it but I would quite like to know if there is really some legal risk. It looks like the quarantining rules are not as clear as the normal ones.

I am flying into the UK on Friday and have just completed the government form. There is no mention of the travel arrangements to your accommodation. Although it does suggest private car if possible. My husband flew back in May and ordered a taxi. The driver was on quarantine following the pick up. None will stop or challenge you. It is more about you assessing the risks and being aware. If you are uncomfortable I would suggest he orders a private taxi.
