Anyone else sick of queueing?

PermanentCobOn · 30/06/2020 11:42

I have been doing really well up to recent weeks but now I am getting queue-rage.

I've not taken up one supermarket slot. Not one. I didn't even try because I thought someone else would need it more than me. I didn't think it was fair. But now, I am just sick of queueing. Went to my local supermarket on Sat, queue was 200 metres long. I said, sod it and went yesterday morning. Again, 100 metres long. I stood there for 45 mins, it started raining and then the security guard went up and down the aisle telling people if they were getting a basket they could go to the front of the queue. So, then about 15 people went in front of me, when there is only 40 people allowed in the shop at any time. I politely questioned this as I was 5 from the front by then which didn't go down well with security who seemed to be enjoying the balance of power on their side.

Anyone else sick of queueing? The thing is, now I am thinking, sod it, I am going to bend over backwards to get a slot at a supermarket because I am not doing this in Winter.

Yes, but I try to go to the supermarket late at night to avoid queues. It does mean shelves are emptier, though.

FizzFan · 30/06/2020 11:46

Just start online shopping again. I don’t do online shopping but if I did I’d have kept it up, other people being able to get their shopping isn’t my responsibility. No queues here any more.

Nutrigrainygoodness · 30/06/2020 11:50

I think our local asda has forgotten about queues and distancing. I went on Saturday there was nobody on the door counting people in, there was no queue. There was far too many people inside to maintain a good distance, massive queues at the checkouts. It was a shit show.

PermanentCobOn · 30/06/2020 11:51

Yes, I suppose anyone who really needs it will still be in a shielding list and if we go into another lockdown, they will probably be on it again. Any other slots available will just be for anyone who can pick them up. That said, I am planning on getting another freezer and doing a bit of prepping for winter.

I'm tired and I feel ill (drained. low and physically wrecked) and don't think I can carry on putting others first (got loads of family shit going on) without it impacting on my own health.

I agree op, the queuing seems to have become a show of 'doing something' which just causes extra hassle and wasted time.

Let me buy the food I need. Let me do it as quickly and as efficiently as possible. I know that the quieter times are in the evening, but after finishing a shift and being in town at 1/2pm in the afternoon, that's the most convenient time for me to go shopping. Not make an additional 7 mile journey at 7pm to avoid a queue and 7 miles back home.

Powerplant · 30/06/2020 11:52

I’m in the supermarket by 7 no waiting just straight in and out and only go every 9-10 days I hate queuing too. So if you are able to set your alarm early.

PermanentCobOn · 30/06/2020 11:53

Does anyone know if supermarkets are going to reduce the 2m rule after 4 July or is this something they are going to do for ages.

Our local shops have done loads to increase online capacity- am on prime now delivers from morrisons in couple hours, full range of stuff, sainsburys has click and collect where it didn’t before, huge tesco has increased click and collect hours at main site and installed refrigerated lorry in car park as second site. I’ve just had a quick look- there are click and collect slots every day this week- some days have no ‘peak’ slots left, but plenty of availability. Just shop on line, look after yourself and take a little break.

Uhoh2020 · 30/06/2020 11:59

Yes I hate it. The thought of queuing up outside a shop for ages to go in and find they dont have what you want fills me with rage tbh. I wont be heading out to the high street any time soon the weekly supermarket queue already gets me wound up. Although I might queue in the pub on Saturday for a beer Grin
Can you imagine the queues in winter if it continues especially doing the big xmas shop! Horrendous!

Stellaris22 · 30/06/2020 12:01

The queueing is necessary though, for the safety of staff and customers. I know that when you're inside the social distancing is then rarely adhered to, but that's the fault of customers.

Supermarkets are doing what they can to keep staff safe, it's frustrating but important to keep this up.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 30/06/2020 12:03

I don't do it. Small local shops combined with online shopping all the way. The local butcher and deli have done very well out of us for the last three months.

SeriouslyRetro · 30/06/2020 12:04

I can understand why people suggest shopping online or click and collect, but there are reasons for wanting to go into a store sometimes.

annabel85 · 30/06/2020 12:16

Queues can mostly be avoided (a few minutes here and there is nothing major)

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 30/06/2020 12:18

I sometimes do click and collect but every three weeks or so I go to a supermarket. I go at about 7:30 on a week day evening. I rarely queue more than 5 minutes. I assume most other people prefer to be at home having dinner at that time as it's been pretty quiet at that time for weeks.

Brownieinthewine · 30/06/2020 12:32

I agree op, it’s totally “for show” as well. The 2m queuing has little to no affect on the spread of the virus. I suppose it makes us feel like we are doing something productive

Isitreally77 · 30/06/2020 12:54

I agree and when you get in the enormous supermarket its virtually empty and the staff at the tills are twiddling their thumbs (no offence to the staff but sainsburys seem to be pushing scan and pack pushing everyone to self service). It doesn't matter what time of day I go to Sainsburys or Waitrose I have to queue to get in, Morrisons and Tesco are a doddle in comparison.

SandieCheeks · 30/06/2020 13:07

There are always loads of click and collect slots at my local Asda and Morrison’s.

feelingverylazytoday · 30/06/2020 13:13

No, I prefer it actually, and hope it continues. The worst thing was shopping right before lockdown when the shops were packed. Everything is orderly and peaceful in the shops that I use now. Having said that, I try and go in the afternoon when the queues are shorter, and I've found some shops are a lot quieter than others.

CatBatCat · 30/06/2020 13:15

Performance security. The theatrics make people feel safe but it does nothing to protect you from the bad stuff. Same thing happened with the liquid restrictions at the airports after 9/11.

nworld · 30/06/2020 13:24

I've refused to queue for any shops during lockdown, I have a toddler in a buggy and she'd never have the patience for it. At first we just went to smaller supermarkets which have no queues, especially in the evenings. In the past month we've been able to get Tesco slots every week, there's loads available so I'm not stopping anyone else from getting them. Plenty of Sainsburys and Waitrose slots too.

Username273451293445z · 30/06/2020 13:32

Obviously each area might be different, but around here there are loads of online shopping slots now. Morrisons especially has loads for either delivery or click and collect. Tesco has lots if you book a week in advance. I would give it a go.

Theforest · 30/06/2020 13:37

Click and collect has loads of slots where we live.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 30/06/2020 14:06

Queues had pretty much died down where I am. I've never used online delivery as I like to choose my own meat/veg/fruit so have been going out shopping since the start of lockdown. At the beginning I was queuing for up to an hour, the past couple of weeks I've walked straight in.

AuntieMarys · 30/06/2020 14:10

I haven't had to queue at massive Sainsbury's and Waitrose at all the last 3 weeks. I normally go about 11am. No queues yesterday at John Lewis yesterday.

Heatherjayne1972 · 30/06/2020 14:32

Nah. You wait until it’s cold and wet People won’t que then - it’s tolerable now because it’s the summer
And By then shops will be so desperate to get people in the door Queuing will be a distant memory
