Council have cancelled all events for rest of the year

I've been sent an email from the council stating all large outdoor (and obviously indoor) events for the rest of the year are cancelled. No funfairs, no bonfire night, no Christmas celebrations. I know that safety is more important and I understand the decision but I'm still so sad. I feel rather hopeless tonight. I keep expecting to wake up and it will all be over Sad.

Not very bright, are you @FredaFox? Where did I say events were more important than jobs and essential services? It doesn’t mean people can’t still feel disappointed that they are cancelled. Maybe you’re happy with a bleak existence and never going anywhere, that doesn’t mean people who feel differently can’t express disappointment.

"Shit happens, Covid is just one of many nasty illnesses we are as a society going to have to live alongside"

Yes, in the longer term that might be it.

But when newly emerging, and with the whole world vulnerable, it's a totally different beast.

FizzFan · 28/06/2020 22:01

Totally @AnguaResurgam

BooseysMom · 28/06/2020 22:04

Trick or Treating should still be allowed..everyone can wear their masks Grin

FrugiFan · 28/06/2020 22:16

Err, hadn't you heard? There's a worldwide pandemic happening at the moment

Yes dont you know theres a pandemic, some people have sadly died and therefore nobody is allowed to complain or be upset or aggrieved about anything else. It could be worse, OP, you could have covid and/or be dead. Unless your lungs are literally turning to dust as we speak you have nothing to complain about Hmm

BigChocFrenzy · 28/06/2020 22:21

"lockdown has been proven not to work"

WRONG
Lockdown worked - as a temporary emergency pause button,
to give time to flatten the curve, build up health services, mass testing, track & trace
and above all to learn about COVID, what measures work best

Now we have all that, cases & deaths are low
==> so lockdown is no longer needed in the UK
It should have been relaxed for schools weeks ago - priorities were wrong

The government dithered about going into lockdown and they have been dithering about coming out of lockdown

No bugger has been planning properly

ListeningQuietly · 28/06/2020 22:21

2003 in France 50,000 people died due a heatwave
but the world did nothing bout global waring

2014/15 Britain 37,000 died because the flu vaccine did not match the strain that turned up

Malaria kills 400.000 a year, every year

but COVID shuts the world down

meditrina · 28/06/2020 22:32

Yes, Covid did, because it is a novel virus, to which no-one has any immunity and about which very little was known.

One day we will co-exist with it. But when brand new, killing 1-2% (and leaving pretty shitty consequences for %age beyond that) plus overwhelming health care, so deaths from all causes increase, and wrecking the economy by uncontrolled shut down as everyone gets ill at the same time.

Not an attractive option.

But the one which Yemen (top story on the news last night, but not much talked about) and Congo (triple whammy of Covid, Ebola and measles) are facing.

BigChocFrenzy · 28/06/2020 22:36

Listening Think about why almost all the West locked down - the leaders aren't all idiots or in a Bill Gates conspiracy

The UK suffered these deaths with lockdown

If you think lockdown didn't reeduce deaths massively,
then plot a graph of deaths per millions for Sweden vs their Scandi neighbours Denmark or Norway

The problem with the UK lockdown is that it was too late,
so it then had to go on longer than elsewhere

However, it is long past time for the UK to come out of lockdown

Cases and deaths fell to a low level weeks ago
and we can look at the continent to see that relaxing hasn't caused a 2nd wave

Lockdown was supposed to be a temporary emergency measure
but the UK's problem is that the govt got its arse glued to the toilet instead of getting off

Midrangecolours · 28/06/2020 22:45

It's awful, we can still be sad about little, local events that won't be happening though Sad

BumbleWumble · 28/06/2020 22:49

@Lemons1571

I think it will slowly dawn on people that Whitty is right. We are in this for the long haul, and there is no way out except a vaccine or brilliant treatment. To date things have been broken down into bite size chunks for us - wasn’t it a review every 3 weeks at the start? Now it’s elongated to “when we have something to say”.
What a future to look forward to. Living in constant fear of a highly contagious, potentially deadly virus coming for you and loved ones, as well as knowing you will no longer be able to interact freely with others, there will be no real social events, life will be mainly confined to the home and when you do venture out you need to constantly be on guard to avoid others. Afraid to even sit on a park bench for fear of it being contaminated with the virus. Every other person to be regarded as a potential leper possibly forever more. Maybe it is reality, but it is too depressing for words.
bakedcrisps · 28/06/2020 23:03

Round here they've cancelled the recycling bin collections so everyone is having to go to the tip or pay a private contractor to take it away.

This is despite guidance from central government to local authorities which told them not to cut refuse collections.

Local council website says that it is going to be "months" until the collections are reinstated.

Why months?? Hmm

Bet you anything they won't be returning at all! Angry

BigChocFrenzy · 28/06/2020 23:42

It's sensible for councils to cancel large public events,
but STUPID to reduce basic services like refuse collections that could affect hygiene or health,
or cause lots of people to make more journeys

I'm in Germany and all collections here including recycling and bulky waste like old furniture have continued throughout

In fact there have been extra services where this helps public health measures
e.g. our council from early on has cut back all the verges along the Rhine footpaths, so people can pass each other with plenty of distance

FredaFox · 02/07/2020 06:58

@FizzFan wow are you always so rude in real life Hmm I didn’t actually say there’s anything wrong in being disappointed but people need to get their priorities in check. I’m more concerned about health and the economy as the UK is financially healthy after a Covid.
There are more important things to be concerned with that a cancelled event, In 6 months this will hopefully have passed and life could be back to some form of normality. Patience is a virtue and so is kindness so if you can’t say anything nice you know what to do

FredaFox · 02/07/2020 06:59

*unhealthy after covid

AuntieStella · 02/07/2020 07:34

It was on the news that pantos are beginning to be cancelled, most gigs between now and Christmas have been called off. It's not just this one council that is cancelling stuff.

Everything is off (or behind closed doors for certain sports)

(Except the London Marathon, which was due to announce decision on the October date last month. Leaving 10s of 1000s of people still training, as further announcement not until 9 weeks before the event)
