Are we any further along in understanding if having covid makes you immune from getting it again, and how long the immunity lasts?

I know people who have had positive antibodies a few weeks after having covid, then testing negative 6weeks later

This would not be surprising, the antibody test is not that sensitive and loads of antibodies don't stick around when there's nothing for them to do, the body is not that wasteful, it does not mean that there is no protection.

MedSchoolRat · 14/07/2020 19:28

How did they get tested so many times -- who is getting multiple antibody tests 6 weeks apart?

I could get tested a 2nd time but declined. I thought I would be quite rare to get multiple opportunities.

You can pay for a test at a pharmacy, I know a few people who are doing the trail vaccines so they get weekly antibody tests,

BigChocFrenzy · 14/07/2020 20:21

An annual vaccine would just be a logistics challenge
It absolutely could & would be done if necessary

Antibodies don't stick around when there's nothing for them to do
Now you point out it makes perfect sense, so are you saying that (because of prior infection with the virus) even though antibodies aren't detectable the body has an enhanced capacity to stop producing them if needed?
They are the sense 'prepped and ready to go'?

I thought this was an interesting article - a translation from a piece by a Swiss virologist. It

You say interesting, I say bullshit

cathyandclare · 15/07/2020 12:59

Are you a virologist? There are many reports of potential cross immunity and innate immunity providing protection. I think some of her conclusions at the end go too far, but many of the comments make sense.

"Sars-Cov-2 isn’t all that new, but merely a seasonal cold virus that mutated and disappears in summer, as all cold viruses do"

Yup, that explains the death plot in Florida, right? I mean, look, that 'cold' virus right all disappeared & hasn't killed anyway, just like cold viruses don't in summer ...

CA, AZ, they aren't having summer right now, are they? #sarcasm
