Anyone noticed their kids not getting general bugs and illnesses since march

I was thinking today my dd hasn't had any coughs and colds she would normally get and my 5m old hasnt had any at all.
Obviously this is due to not doing what we would before. Playgroup, parks, swimming, soft play and childminder for the 2yr old.
She often had bugs of sorts.

I worry now they'll not have much of an immunity then when it all re opens, will things like common coughs and colds get confused with thinking people have covid?

Or am I being daft?

I remember a thread in here when lockdown started where we were wondering would people get ill with other viruses.
Our house has been quite healthy. We usually get colds in April as the weather keeps changing but this year nothing. But now we’re all sneezing away with hay fever.

BogRollBOGOF · 22/06/2020 18:16

Mine don't tend to get ill at this time of year anyway. DS2 was sick at the end of football training once and given his immediate recovery (yes we did 48 hour rule with a blatently healthy child) it looked like it was an effect of running around on a hot, humid afternoon rather than a bug.

I've had my children out most days to keep their immune systems and fitness up. I am also taking them to quieter shops and keeping them active in society as much as I can.

Deelish75 · 22/06/2020 18:17

I think going forward into autumn everyone will be on high alert for Covid and second wave. Not sure how workplaces and schools are going to deal with people going into isolation.

ssd · 22/06/2020 18:17

Yes it's amazing none if us here have had any bugs either, obviously hand washing and social distancing has helped.

MinnieMousse · 22/06/2020 18:21

DD1 has managed 3 illnesses too. She had a really high fever in the middle of lockdown when she hadn't been anywhere so I had to take her for a Covid test. She's also had 2 bouts of tonsillitis. I would have assumed that was bacterial except one time her sister went down with it a few days later. She's been back in school for 3 weeks, just 3 days a week in a bubble of 7 and has aready come home with a sniffle. I'm surprised at how many things she still seems to have picked up. She was really unwell with a virus that took her several weeks to get over at the beginning of the year so maybe that has left her more susceptible.

LockdownLou · 22/06/2020 18:23

Three children here not one sniffle since lockdown began.

Bol87 · 22/06/2020 18:49

We’ve been very well since lockdown too until DD went back to nursery. She was fine but myself & 14 week old caught something. Both very congested, sneezy, under the weather. I had a massive headache & sinus pain and dizziness. I went for a Covid test & it was negative. Back to the nursery bugs it seems 🙈

Silversun83 · 22/06/2020 18:53

2 and 4 year olds here and they were constantly picking up bugs from nursery. 2 year old had had a runny nose for weeks before lockdown.

Nothing since! It has been bliss and they have both been sleeping well as a result.

Like a PP, have been taking them out lots in the woods etc and letting them roll around in the dirt so hoping that is helping their immune system to some extent!

Makinglists · 22/06/2020 18:54

Ds2 who is 9 suffers from chronic glue ear . Every sniffle causes him real pain. Since lockdown his ears have been really good because we’ve had not a hint of a snuffle.

Firef1y72 · 22/06/2020 19:09

Yes and it's one of the things I'm concerned about. Catching the coughs and colds is how a child builds up it's immune system. Especially concerning for younger babies, who have quite possibly had zero exposure to the "normal" bugs and therefore will have no immunity when we go back to normal. Not even breastfeeding will be helping their immune system as the mother is unlikely to be coming in to contact with the various virii

Pretty sure I read somewhere that there is a school of thought that the rise in severe allergies is in part down to the cult of bleaching every surface and not allowing children to get mucky. yet another blow to the children who as a group are least affected by Covid

seenbeensbean · 22/06/2020 19:15

This is why we've been using normal soap and not anti-bacterial soap or cleaning agents at home.

Runnerduck34 · 22/06/2020 19:17

Yes no coughs or colds here either, usually someone will catch a cold in spring

Mummabeary · 22/06/2020 19:46

I started a thread on this the other week as I keep reading in the media that part of the reason they think children are affected less by Covid is that their immune systems are primed to fight it as they come into contact with so many other bugs. I really worry that after 3-6 months isolation and distancing we may have actually made children more vulnerable to this in the winter!

Catastrofuck · 22/06/2020 19:51

My son has had a couple of bouts of runny nose (no fever or cough or anything). Later one could have been a reaction to a particular pollen I suppose, but he definitely passed something on to me and the baby. He doesn’t pick much up from nursery though tbh, or not that I notices anyway

Wallywobbles · 22/06/2020 19:58

14 yo had tonsillitis. We are out of confinement here (since May 11) and no-ones had anything yet.

SamSeabornforPresident · 22/06/2020 20:14

That's interesting. I was thinking that about DD2 (16 months) for a while. She's never been ill but is starting nursery in August when I go back to work and I imagine she'll get everything then. So she'll have a temperature constantly but we can't get her a COVID test, so the rest of us will have to self isolate constantly. Why can't under 5s be tested? Is it the invasive nature of the tests?

Devonmum2020 · 22/06/2020 20:23

Yes. My child has been in school throughout. Not only have they not had any coronavirus cases in her school they haven't had any puke bugs etc at all. It's been brilliant.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 22/06/2020 20:55

Pretty much my entire company of several thousand is wfh. I'd love to see the absence data for q2 this year vs q2 last year. I expect mental illness/stress will have risen but I'd be incredibly surprised if D&V and general colds/coughs haven't significantly dropped. Offices are basically one level of germ stew down after schools!

LynetteScavo · 22/06/2020 20:55

I thought I was always getting slight cold after slight cold. I wondered how it was possible during lockdown and tried an antihistamine nasal spray. It turns out I just have a lot of minor allergies.

I was hoping lice will be killed off, but there seem to be a few threads where parents only noticed them a few months in to lockdown, so I'm sure there will be lots which have been over looked.

oohnicevase · 22/06/2020 21:02

But you won't get any hugs because you haven't been mixing with anyone . They aren't in the air !
My kids are pretty healthy and we are as a household rarely unwell so I haven't noticed but I would imagine most people aside from Covid are the same !

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 22/06/2020 21:08

Yes I was only saying it to a friend today how in 4 months neither of the children have had so much as a sniffle. The Calpol bottle has been left untouched !

WillowB · 22/06/2020 21:17

I was also wondering about the impact lockdown would have had on viruses such as Chicken pox. It usually peaks during the spring months. It might be a long time until levels in the community are high again.

Frlrlrubert · 22/06/2020 21:17

I hadn't thought about it but DD's permanently snotty nose has cleared up during lockdown.

Socialdistancegintonic · 22/06/2020 21:22

We have all been so healthy! It’s kind of nice.

BrieAndChilli · 22/06/2020 21:23

Well DS 2 age 9 had high temp and aches a couple of weeks ago. Took him for a drive through test but was negative for Covid.
No idea where he caught a bug from though seeing as all he has done is go on very rural walks where we don’t bump into anyone!
