Are restaurants allowed to open and serve to tables outside now

Several restaurants local to me have opened and are taking bookings to serve to outside tables. Is this now permitted? I thought not but maybe I have missed something?

Only open for take away here.

Chaotic45 · 19/06/2020 10:25

I'm confused too. They are also taking 'normal' bookings from 4 July. Maybe they are assuming they will be able to open by this point.

My husbands pub will be opening for 4/07 he has seating for 140 and is now allowed vertical drinking.

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:38

They will be open from that point. Our company have confirmed it.

Kab30 · 19/06/2020 10:41

Really ...i run a pub and havent heard anything x

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:45

Where are you? Are you an indie or apart of a company?

toomanyplants · 19/06/2020 10:48

Vertical drinking???
Does that mean just standing up?

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:49

It does. But they keep refusing to it as vertical drinking and I find it hilarious so now I do it.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/06/2020 10:49

Is vertical drinking inside or outside?

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:52

Inside and outside. Tables have been moved to ensure distancing and there are drop off points. So servers place the food on these empty tables and then the customers must collect them.

toomanyplants · 19/06/2020 10:52

Ha! Thanks Mumsnet.
You really do learn something new every day.
Vertical drinking.....well, I start off vertical 🤷🏻‍♀️

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:53

It's just so pompous. But it's tickled me for days now. No longer shall I just Ben standing at a bar. I shall be vertically drinking.

There was something else really funny as well but I can't remember it.
When he gets home I'll flick through the many hundreds of pages and see if I can remember.

ineedaholidaynow · 19/06/2020 10:56

But they shouldn't be opening before 4th July?

ineedaholidaynow · 19/06/2020 10:57

What's the social distancing criteria? I notice we have just moved to alert level 3 which is handy!

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 10:59

To be honest. Not as good as I was hoping.
The tables are spaced out, they have to try to navigate high traffic areas like the entrances to toilets. One way system for entrance/ exit. Drop off/ pick up points for food and drinks.
Staff will have one job. So you order with the one person who uses the till. Then one person does the drinks and one person does the food running.
None of these people will have PPE.
The only person with PPE will be the person who's sole job it is to clean everything constantly.

Coffeecak3 · 19/06/2020 11:00

Vertical drinking, that's so funny.
Who would have thought so many new phrases in 2020.
Every morning before we leave the house 'Have you got your mask?'
I imagine in WW2 the size of the gas masks it would have been obvious and no need to ask.

Kab30 · 19/06/2020 11:53

Independent x

AskingforaBaskin · 19/06/2020 11:55

Sorry. That'll be why. The big bosses of the big companies have been in direct contact with the Government for guidance.

As well as with the breweries and water companies. It's taking weeks to prepare.
I'm assuming you've got barrels of gone off beer. That's been great fun in sorting out. The water companies have been going nuts.

DamitJanet · 19/06/2020 11:58

No, they should only be serving takeaway at the moment, not to outside tables. A bistro near me has been stopped doing just that this week.
Most are working on the premise that they’ll be open (with appropriate distancing measures) from 4th July, which although hasn’t been officially confirmed it seems pretty set , particularly with the lowering of the alert level today.

Kab30 · 19/06/2020 12:19

Very odd as my brewery most of them still on furlough and we cant order for at least a month ...and brewery hasn't started kegging for the uk yet either ..x
