That’s surely linked to higher prevalence of diabetes?

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 08:42

South Asians are 20% more likely to die from Covid 😲 and are on average 12 years younger, that's a massive difference, and they tend not to have dementia, obesity or lung disease, but very high levels of diabetes."

My dh is south Asian with diabetes Sad despite being fit and healthy, no overweight, his doctor said it’s just his genes that make him more susceptible to diabetes.
I wonder what the stats are like for the dc’s being mixed .
I think I heard that if the vaccine is successful it will go to those at higher risk so at least there is that.

pinktaxi · 19/06/2020 10:18

It is the diabetes I think. There is a genetic predisposition to diabetes regardless of weight.

Sweetnhappy1 · 19/06/2020 14:15

Weird though that you don't get the same death rates in South Asia

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 14:55

Many reasons for that, they don’t test as rigorously as we do, very hard to do with 1.4 billion, 800 million live on less than £2 a day

And new research by economist Partha Mukhopadhyay suggests that young people in India are dying at a rate much higher than expected when you break down fatalities by age.
As of 30 April, the case fatality rate in Maharashtra for the 40 to 49 year-olds, for example, was 4%. Italy's fatality rate for the same age group was a tenth of that.

In the UAE they released figures that in 40% of the deaths, the victims had diabetes

itsgettingweird · 19/06/2020 17:04

That's a huge percentage.

Seems odd that South Asians have the highest death rate yet the Asian counties have a better overall death rate than U.K.

And both SARS pandemics have originated from Asia.

itsgettingweird · 19/06/2020 17:05

Oh sorry sweet I've just noticed you had pondered same thing.

torydeathdrug · 19/06/2020 17:34

I think it depends what you mean by "South Asians" - to me that would mean India/Pakistan/Bangladesh/Sri Lanka etc, when people talk about SARS affected countries they usually mean South East Asia (China, Singapore, Vietnam, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand etc).

Devlesko · 19/06/2020 17:40

I just thought it was because there were more key workers who are BAME. I also think it might depend on the make up of DNA, you can have someone who is half Asian, quarter, 3/4.

I don't think it's diabetes because lots of people have this irrespective of their DNA.
It can't be obesity, as lots of other people are obese.

Maybe it's being BAME, key worker, obese and diabetic cases.

SouthsideOwl · 19/06/2020 17:53

Plus there's more of a multi-generational household culture in the UK, so closer to grandparents therefore less social distancing. An unfortunate mix maybe :(

TheDrsDocMartens · 19/06/2020 18:30

Is it Asians in UK/US etc who are more prone to diabetes because of the difference in diets?

Devlesko · 19/06/2020 18:44

I'm BAME and diabetic , I'm not overweight and my diet is really good, it always has been.
I'm a cook from scratch person and so is dh, the kids used to have the odd sweet treat, but we have never been a junk food family.
This was hinted at some time ago but little else was reported until now.
Thanks for this OP. Thanks

Anyone heard anymore about the different blood types.

Alex50 · 19/06/2020 18:48

@Devlesko could you contact your doctor, to ask for advice? I did read somewhere certain blood groups are more at risk but haven’t seen anything recently

feelingverylazytoday · 19/06/2020 21:49

It's people with Type B that are more at risk. O type is least risk. This goes into detail directorsblog.nih.gov/2020/06/18/genes-blood-type-tied-to-covid-19-risk-of-severe-disease/

feelingverylazytoday · 19/06/2020 21:51

Sorry, should have said type A, not type B.

Devlesko · 21/06/2020 19:19

Arghhh!

Just wanted to come back and say many thanks OP.
I'm A+ and job hunting, I'm making sure it's remote Thanks

Alex50 · 21/06/2020 19:52
