If SD is reduced to 1m in schools..

Will that allow things to go back to normal or will children still have to return part time and still do home schooling ?

Will it just allow an increase in the number of children in each bubble ?

Also, would the 1m rule apply in FE colleges and 6th forms ?

Would not allow for full time schooling in the secondary school I teach in. The classrooms are not big enough and we only have a classroom or two spare each period so not enough rooms (or staff) to split classes up into smaller groups.

This is before thinking of the issues of trying to keep all students 1m apart at break time, in the tiny canteen during the 40 min lunch period, in the tight corridors.

Other issues would be lack of sinks to get everyone to wash their hands frequently and getting the kids to and from school when many travel on school or public busses.

The front of our school looks utterly terrifying. My child hasn’t yet gone back, but I know some of the little ones have, and their parents are aghast at the attitude.

The words ‘military style’ are being used a lot. As well as NO TALKING and NO MIXING in huge red letters on the corridor.

You think that’s ok? For four year olds?

I wonder if a perplex screen of 2 on each desk would allow normal amount of children per desk?

You could probably have 50% in Mon-Tues and 50% Thur-Fri with cleaning in between.

Twinklelittlestar1 · 19/06/2020 08:55

*- More room, such as letting schools use village halls.

  • More staff to facilitate smaller groups and staff absence.
  • Money for cleaning, facilities adjustments and IR thermometers.
  • Centralised distance learning to stop massive time wasted on teachers all reinventing the wheel badly.
  • Most importantly: A nation plan which is such to. The constant changes in guidance use up millions of man-hours as thousands of schools, academy chains and LEAs have to produce and communicate new plans.*

Yes. It seems so many people are seeing social distancing as an 'obstacle' rather than a measure that is put in place to protect. We need alternative solutions - extra space, extra staff, PPE? the idea of throwing out any protective measures is at best lazy but I guess it would suit the government who don't want to spend the money

DS is moving up to secondary in sept 🤞🏻, so I have no idea how many they'd fit in as I can't remember the rooms! His current primary would maybe fit 15 in? Which is double a bubble currently

frozendaisy · 19/06/2020 09:08

If 1m physical distancing, Y5 would be half capacity around here, has been suggested week in-week out, with online lessons week out.

QuarantineQueen · 19/06/2020 09:11

No. Our primary has the bubbles instead of 2m. They couldn't fit 15 in with that space.
Middle school area here, so in middle school if we had to social distance I could get 12 of my class in with 1m distance as my classroom is bigger than the primary ones. With 2m I could only fit 6, maximum.
Partner senior school wouldn't be able to use bubbles because of subject options so they are stuck at about 6-8 in a room with 2m distancing and 12-15 at 1m distancing. That is still only half a class. We would need to reduce SD to 1m just to get the same secondary numbers back as primart currently have.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 19/06/2020 09:18

I don’t think so. The limit on 15 is as much about the number of people in what’s probably a poorly ventilated area as much as social distancing within that group.

I think either Gove or Williamson has already said social distancing isn’t the issue when it comes to maximum class sizes. Although that doesn’t mean there won’t be a change of direction.
