Buses and masks

Harrykanesrightsock · 18/06/2020 20:14

I work in a town which has had one of the highest proportion of cases per population any i am lucky enough to drive to work but my office overlooks the main road from the town bus station. Without fail every bus that i happened to look at had at least one and in more cases many people without masks or with their masks around their neck or hanging around one ear while on the phone. This has been all week so not just a oops forget about it on Monday. I just don't get it.

Same here. I am in a badly hit area too and every bus I have seen has had a few without masks. Some will have health issues but I suspect others claiming they have so they dont have to wear them.

jellybeanz1212 · 18/06/2020 20:21

Went on the bus today about 8 of us only one without a mask

AntiHop · 18/06/2020 20:22

I have a very long journey to work. I take my mask off for a break sometimes. I'm trying my best.

TimeWastingButFun · 18/06/2020 20:22

They should be told to get off if they're not wearing one, or take it off.

Harrykanesrightsock · 18/06/2020 20:30

I understand if it is a long journey that it may become uncomfortable but these busses are literally leaving the depot so unlikely to be because of this.

My OH is a bus driver and they have been told they can't refuse travel, ffs. Completely at odds with government legislation and unfair on those travelling who do follow the guidelines.

HeIenaDove · 18/06/2020 20:52

I think bus companies wont press the issue because its summer.

The more uncomfortable the passengers are in the heat the higher the demands will be for air conditioning to be installed which will cost the companies money.

Its not because they care about disabled people because there wouldnt have been those court cases brought by disabled people trying to uphold their rights to the wheelchair space

Which brings me to my next point.................if this mask thing is strictly enforced with no excuses no matter what your condition, some passengers may well start asking why bus companies wernt as eager to enforce the law about wheelchair spaces as they are the law about masks!!

Dadnotamum72 · 18/06/2020 20:57

I think they cant refuse travel because they cant be expected to diffientiate between non conformists and those that have a genuine excemption.

HeIenaDove · 18/06/2020 20:57

Well i had my face mask on ready to get on the bus..........which then didnt turn up. When i was on the bus last Wednesday and Friday, they kept reiterating that i would have to wear a mask this week but omitted to tell me that they were reverting back to the normal timetable from this week (and they are not on social media so i couldnt check) so there i stood in the blazing sun in a bloody mask for a bus that didnt show. These masks arent cheap either

Nosuchluck · 18/06/2020 22:16

I've been on 4 buses this week and only one passenger hasn't worn a mask which could have been for a medical reason.
If never worn one before this Tuesday and when I put it in as I boarded the bus it caused me to get very close to a panic attack. I just about kept it in but kept moving it away from my mouth and nose so don't know how effective it was. If I see people without one I wouldn't judge.

Ponoka7 · 18/06/2020 22:23

Dadnotamum72, you were supposed to get a letter from your GP and have it available.

There's no excuse. They have Staff available to stop fare dodging, but not for mask wearing.

The buses that I use aren't enforcing it. We need clarification on whether masks are a, benefit or not, because otherwise this is another division in terms of income/ status, which we know impacts on your likelihood to die from Covid.

We need it sorting out before September. At the start people wasn't practicing SD etc, but we soon got used to it.

HeIenaDove · 18/06/2020 22:29

were supposed to get a letter from your GP and have it available.

a. so more pressure on the NHS we were all clapping for.

b. disabled/ill people having to prove their condition yet again. They have never had to do that before.............oh wait

#PIP #DLA

I knew disabled people would be the ones made to suffer so selfish pricks could continue to go on ski trips and to Cheltenham after the virus was already well known about.

I like wearing a mask. I've got some cotton bandanas which I fold over a piece of kitchen roll and attach with hair scrunchies. They are cool cos they're cotton and fully adjustable so don't pull. I like not having to worry about my resting bitch face scaring small children and not having to paste a social grin on when dealing with people I don't know. I feel anonymous and invisible when I wear one. I do have sympathy for those who can't wear them but I don't think I'm going to want to stop wearing mine.

I had to catch a train on Friday- first time on public transport since March. I was the only person wearing a mask. There were about 10 people in my carriage.

baroqueandblue · 29/06/2020 21:07

The very first Monday that they became compulsory I got chucked off a bus for not having one. Two full bags of shopping and recovering from a broken back (couldn't get an online delivery slot for love nor money, not vulnerable enough) so had to go for a taxi. Fine, I was stupid, I knew it was coming and thought I'd get away with it, when actually bus drivers have died. I learned my lesson!

But then I was on two buses since where some passengers weren't wearing masks. They weren't pulled up and shamed in front of everyone else for it like I was. So I guess it's not policy across the board and may just be down to individual drivers to say something if they wish.

I wear glasses and they steam up constantly while I'm wearing my mask. So not a good look! Grin But if it helps save lives, or even put people's minds at rest, so be it. I don't know where I'd be without buses and to think that drivers have died because they went out and did their job is heartbreaking.

Absolute fucking bollocks about air conditioning.
If it recirculates air this helps to spread disease.

Just because you don’t like masks, doesn’t mean everyone else’s feats or comfort should be ignored.

I’m generally really laid back about the covid stuff but buses are a stupid place to risk screwing up. They don’t even open the windows.

It’s a joke.

Beatrixpotterspencil · 29/06/2020 22:02

I mean it’s fine of people can’t wear them.
But when 80% of passengers don’t I’m not falling for it.
Does this then mean 80% of passengers have a health issue or difficulty?
Most likely not.

Sadly this will put shade on those who are genuinely unable to wear one, which ruins it for us all.

breakfastclubb · 29/06/2020 22:19

Not correct that you need a letter. You just need to apply for an exemption card from stagecoach or whoever - which are free.
