I think Dd should have a test, she won’t have one.

She’s an adult so I can’t make her.....lives here though.

She has a sore throat and her glands are up. Also has diahorrhea. Now the glands/sore throat she does get quite a bit. She reckons she has white spots on her tonsils and it’s just her usual tonsil flare up.

She refuses to have a test as she heard that the swab goes quite high up and she doesn’t fancy it.

So now I need to self quarantine for 14 days don’t I? Whereas if she had the test and it was negative I could probably leave the house sooner.

Wow sorry but your daughter is being ridiculous and selfish - my 6 yo DD was swabbed (properly, right up and in!) and it was fine. She was fine. Eyes watered but quickly moved on. She had a winter cold ( Southern Hemisphere) (No covid, we have no community transmission but we are being encouraged to get tested even with slight cold/flu/listed covid like symptoms ( sore throats is most definitely listed here).
Even if it was just tonsillitis is it not better to know - to remove all doubt?
I hope she does the test you ordered OP - just for your sake and piece of mind.

OP I have the home test here to do today, honestly it really doesn't look like it needs to go too far in from the instructions. I'll post a picture.

Thanks. She’s coming round to the idea when I pointed out that if it’s positive she could perhaps be less worried about catching it in the coming months.

If she usually gets tonsillitis she may be right, but one of those ladies in NZ thought her symptoms were from an underlying condition.

However, it's up to her and she doesn't have classic symptoms. As a pp said sore throat was never a classic symptom.

Is it likely she's caught it - eg does she work outside the home?

JacobReesMogadishu · 18/06/2020 16:47

No, it's unlikely she's caught it. She's only left the house once in 3 months...but that was to tk maxx on Mon

The test is fine! You swab your tonsils and then put it up one of your nostrils until you get resistance. honestly its fine, my 13 year old managed it (as did I, DH and 17 year old DD).

Honestly, some people on this thread are ridiculous. She isn’t being incredibly selfish if she’s following the government advice! If others want to be more cautious than required that’s up to them, but she’s doing absolutely nothing wrong if she declines a test.

I agree, fuck me our economy is going to fucked forever if everytime someone has a random illness the whole family quarantines for 14 days.

Holy shit I'm sneezing, quick all leave work get tested and barricade ourselves in. Otherwise we are selfish.

Quarantine for

New continuous cough
High temperature
Change/loss of taste/smell.

ArthurMorgan · 18/06/2020 17:18

Does she actually have white spots or is she just saying she is?

StrawberryJam200 · 18/06/2020 17:25

I do think there's going to be quite a lot of adults not wanting the test because they're afraid of it, or not taking their children for it because they think it'll upset them.

The government needs to launch a public info campaign about this and many other aspects of lockdown easing!

Northernsoullover · 18/06/2020 17:31

I know a few people who tested positive for Covid-19 and not one of them had a cough or temperature. They were tested through work. I think anyone feeling unwell should test.

time4anothername · 18/06/2020 17:42

there are so many people who have tested postive for Covid without fever, continuous cough or loss of smell/taste. If the gov website has been reduced to saying these are the only symptoms that need testing or isolation this virus is never going away it seems to me.
Won't the GP want it done too in case it is actually bacterial and needs antibiotics?

HeyMaCorona · 18/06/2020 17:51

Why does she need a test for a sore throat?.And why do u need to self isolate? Weird.

Tootsey11 · 18/06/2020 20:14

Those of you saying why do you need to test for a sore throat clearly don't know the full list of symptoms. I had no cough and no loss of taste or smell. I started with diarrhea for 4 days, then sore throat and chest pain. The hot chest and back started at 10 days in. Those first 8 or 9 days you would not of thought covid, but it was confirmed.

The government really need to include all possible symptoms.

ragged · 18/06/2020 20:19

She doesn't have any of the key symptoms. Confused
Hope she feels 100% tomorrow.

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 18/06/2020 22:53

I think YABU. Fever and persistent cough would warrant self isolation and subsequent testing. Surely?

FruitTingleFrizzante · 18/06/2020 23:22

Wow I'm not from the UK so I'm quite stunned that people think it's an over reaction to op's daughter getting tested. Obviously different countries run by different guidance but am surprised at the resistance to swab testing.
