Are any schools sending home reading books?

I assume that there aren’t currently any schools that are sending reading books home? Is that the position in all areas at the moment?

This is potentially “ok” for those children in families that can afford to purchase reading books, or have some at home from older siblings, but will surely disproportionately affect children in families that can’t afford to purchase their own. I know there are some available to read online, but not everyone has access to a screen either...

I understand if it is not safe for books to be sent home, returned to school and redistributed, but am wondering if there is a way around this for those children that otherwise have no access to books.

We were sent home with the usual two reading scheme books for the week. We've got access to Rising Stars online though which I've actually quite liked as we've been able to read a new book a day and DC's reading has really improved with the variety.

I had anticipated this though, so had got a pile of appropriate reading scheme books from the library just before lock down as well.

We have plenty of books at home as well, so older DC have just been reading what is around, and I've bought a few new ones as well for them.

However I do wonder if this will be accessed by the children whom need it the most.

Of course it won't. When the state withdraws from society inequality increases. People have known this since Victorian times.

With full bug club access can you select any books or are they selected by teacher?

Ive got the temporary access but that has just stsrted on the independent readers is that what others found?

I want school to pay for access from sept

My DD came home with 2 library books when school closed to most. This week all the DC are going to school to pick up a book each (to keep). They also have Bug Club with online books.

Luckily we also have lots of books at home but it will of course affect the DC without many books at home and no internet.

Try Oxford Owl and Rising Stars - online books you can read on tablets. Also if your school subscribed to Purple Mash the Serial Mash online books are currently free, I think they're better than Twinkl.

DD school has been. She got about 10 at start of lockdown, then after Easter the teachers dropped off work at each child's house along with new books (5) & took away the old ones. This is a very small village primary hence why this was possible.
We now go to school on a specific day to collect the new work pack & new books from a box outside the school, & drop off any old books or work to be marked into another box.

Lots of opportunities for dd to access online from her school and from what they have sent home they are looking at subscriptions to further sites for access. Unfortunately she can't manage to read them at all, she already struggles with reading and the addition of trying to read off a screen adds massively to her frustration. We have signed her up for reading chest and she's getting books through the post most weeks.

No but we got the link to oxford owl and have been using that and we were also given a login for the app Epic! which I don't find very helpful for reading but has lots of narrated stories which my DD enjoys listening to

My youngest gets 10 e books a week from his school and paper books as a bulk every months. So they get 50 books a month which is more than enough. The written books got back on mass and are left 3-4 days before being handed out. New ones arrive a sealed plastic bag but we are advised to wait 2-3 days before opening it.

We aren't allowed. The LEA included this in their instructions to schools.
We had planned to, had plans on place including quarantining returned books for 72 hours, etc. Was ready to go this week. Lea latest advice confirmed not allowed. We are a state maintained school and have to follow the LEA rules.

Aragog · 18/06/2020 19:52

We already used BUg Club and have Oxford Owls access too for pupils.

We aren't allowed because of the concern there was of virus coming in from homes and having to wear PPE while handling and cleaning them, which is why I sighed at the emphasis given on the younger children being back in school to learn to read. We can't hold books unless our hands are newly cleaned then the books have to be cleaned afterwards which can cause damage to the covers. Then of course there is the problem of not being allowed to sit close enough to 'share' the book.

We have actually scanned books and printed copies of pages so we can do some reading altogether.

Mysocalledlifexx · 18/06/2020 21:29

Ours is online get epic its great they get to pick from so much books.

LeSquigh · 18/06/2020 21:38

Yes, our school sent a load home with each child at the beginning of lockdown and we are able to go in and change them if we wish.
