Holiday to North Wales

Hi everyone, we have a family holiday booked in North Wales at the end of next month, going into the beginning of August.
It hasn’t been cancelled yet, the final payment date has been moved to a couple of weeks time, instead of the start of June as it was originally supposed to be.

I’m just wondering how likely it is to go ahead? I know Wales have different rules from us here in England.

Thanks in advance.

I thought the first minister of Wales said ‘Wales is shut for the summer’

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 17:31

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince I hadn’t heard that. Oh well I guess that’s that then. Just a case of waiting for the self catering place to cancel.

It’s a self catering cottage we are meant to be staying in.

All is not lost...

"Wales will remain largely shut over the summer with visitors likely to be restricted to staying in cottages and self-catering flats, the Welsh first minister has warned holidaymakers.

Mark Drakeford said the “best hope” was that tourists would be allowed to sleep in entirely self-contained accommodation because of the risk of spreading coronavirus."

We had a week booked self catering in a cottage in North Wales, like yourself the last week in July. We've changed it to a cottage, self catering in Devon same week. We waited till a couple of days ago but didn't want to risk it and wait any longer. The company were okay about us changing.

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 17:37

@PhoneLock that’s good, thank you, though does that mean we wouldn’t be able to go for walks or to the shops or take a trip to the beach etc? I’m assuming the shops and walks would be permitted?

I obviously know that restaurants and pubs won’t be open, but I wonder about takeaways. Are they open currently?

North Wales is rather slower than the rest of the country in recovery, it is only just starting to drop below its peak now.
Consider your options carefully.

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 17:42

@adacoleman thanks for the info. If we do go we’ll largely stay in and around the self catering cottage and won’t be mixing with anyone else, except to get food. Hopefully by the end of July/start of August there’s some improvement.

We are in the same boat, booked in a privately owned caravan on a site on the coast.
I think the next lot of lockdown announcements for Wales are on Friday, so we are going to wait until then to decide.

Much as they are being cautious, I cannot see them keeping Wales closed to tourists as that would mean certain ruin for what is a massive industry in the country.
We are hoping the site will be open with maybe one or 2 takeaways and as long as the weather holds and we can get to the beach, we'll be happy.

DontGoJasonWaterfalls · 17/06/2020 17:44

Whereabouts in North Wales are you staying? Some parts don't have takeaways never mind ones that'll be open at this time 😉

Wishforanishwishdiash · 17/06/2020 17:48

@AdaColeman

This isn't true. We do have a trashy local newspaper.

We have very, very, very few cases. The number did rise with increased testing in care homes and the prison. . If you don't plan to hang out in care homes, the prison, or the meat packaging plant, your chances of catching Covid in North Wales is very low.

Wait until Friday, OP. The first minister will make an announcement on Friday. He is a ninny, and if he dithers than I'd cancel because he is a dither-er.

As a North Wales resident, please know that lots of us hope you can come. We do have some very good take aways open on Anglesey. I had a cake and take away coffee this weekend and it was a joy.

I work for a holiday company in North Wales - B&B, caravan/campsite and self catering accommodation. We’re still none the wiser but we’re pretty sure we won’t be opening in July.

In Wales, we have a five mile limit as guidance in terms of travel, and I’ve read that if they let tourists in it will be to self contained accommodation with its own facilities and they’ll be subject to the same five mile rule.

It’s all conjecture at this stage, but I would be thinking carefully about what is within the five mile radius of where you’ve booked, just in case!

Waves at wish

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 17:54

@DontGoJasonWaterfalls the cottage is in Cwm Dyserth.

@Wishforanishwishdiash, it was a Welsh friend who is a HDU nurse who mentioned that to me, just a couple of days ago, but who knows, perhaps they are wrong.

tbtf · 17/06/2020 18:01

Dyserth is lovely OP, I hope you can come. Check out Frankies Farm Shop on Facebook, they're doing afternoon tea and anti pasti platters for collection.

Not an ad Grin

Other takeaways are open too.

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 18:01

@Wishforanishwishdiash thanks, that’s good to know.

One more thing, are there lots of nice walks in the area?

OP posts:
110APiccadilly · 17/06/2020 18:50

The number in hospital with Covid seems to be falling in Betsi Cadwaladr (the North Wales health board), according to the data the Welsh Gov publish, though I think slightly more slowly than in the rest of Wales, which means cases in that area are almost certainly falling as well. Reported cases is a different thing because there's so much more testing now. (And I think there's even a whole new test centre in North Wales?)

However, at the moment, in Wales we still can't go outside our "local area" - guidance is about 5 miles, but that's guidance not law. I'd wait and see what changes on Thursday/Friday if I were you. I find it hard to believe they'll try to keep tourism closed all summer - the economic impact would be huge! - but they might, there's just no way of knowing at the moment.

Slytherin · 17/06/2020 19:55

@110APiccadilly yes we will wait until Thursday/Friday then assess from there. We don’t mind if we can only travel 5 miles from where we are staying. The local area looks nice and the cottage has a garden too.

@110APiccadilly that’s good news. Thank you.
