Journalist questions on daily briefing re schools just aren’t good enough.

When they actually ask them(which is rare)they don’t follow up when fobbed off to get any answers.

The BBC reporter today just looked bored and when he and more importantly parents didn't receive any answers to his question he just followed it up with a football question.

So sick of it and our weak government who just don’t sort this massive problem for children out.

My 9 year old wrote a poem today about how miserable she is and how she just wants it all to end. I wanted to cry reading it. Then she spent all evening crying. Our school can't even get the priority years in. We need a plan for September. I will have a child with serious mental health issues if this farce continues.

Sad bless her. My dd is nine too and has sn...she was just starting to gain in confidence socially and had lots of exciting trips and activities organized...I'm heartbroken for her

Whyisitsodifficult · 17/06/2020 22:21

Totally agree. The complete disregard for our children’s education which is more than just learning, it’s the interaction and socialising that comes with schooling. It’s disgusting that we were told that our children would be back before summer and now that’s not happening. All children need schooling not just key worker kids and random year groups; how is this equitable?
My local MP took 9 weeks to reply to an email about another matter! I think parents should take to the streets!

formerbabe · 17/06/2020 22:26

It was so bizarre at the briefing...the schools issue was totally brushed over...seemed like football was more of a priority.

I'd happily march over this. It's disgusting.

Graphista · 17/06/2020 22:29

Normally I would agree with criticising the journalists but are you aware how restrictive the govt have been wrt which journalists they're allowing into the briefings and what questions they're allowing - they are pre-screening.

It's censorship disguised as open discourse and that it's happening in a supposed democratic country is frankly terrifying!

But those journalists investigating and writing outside of the briefings DO need to be doing their jobs much better

Graphista · 17/06/2020 22:30

They're also plain IGNORING questions from Mps who aren't tories - this is becoming of great concern to several MPs who are I have been told looking into what action they can take on this.

Canshopwillshop · 17/06/2020 22:39

Is there a petition about re-opening schools? I’d happily sign up if there is. I’m desperate to get my year 10 and 8 kids back! My year 10 only has 3 mornings in between now and summer hols 🙁 How the hell are GCSE’s going to happen next year?

Elderflowervioletrose · 17/06/2020 22:44

Can I just ask what you all think of thy e many offices/work places that are still closed with staff working from home. Should they all go back too? As if you are saying schools should open for all year groups with no social distancing then surely all the office workers can go back too?

Schools are staffed by quite a few adults (not just teachers) so if you all think it’s perfectly safe for no social distancing in schools so your children can get their education, then surely social distancing should just end for everyone now? Hmm

formerbabe · 17/06/2020 22:49

I couldn't care less what office workers do.

Boris Johnson annoounced at the press briefing last week that Gavin Williamson would announce the big summer catch up plan this week, no sign of it yet... 🙄

Canshopwillshop · 17/06/2020 22:57

Thanks @Tatapie

Elderflowervioletrose · 17/06/2020 23:08

To all of you complaining to your MP, are you providing any constructive suggestions as to how you would like schools to reopen to more/all children?

Would you be happy with a rota? Each year group gets a week in school every few weeks? Or one/two days a week per year group depending on size of school. Or do you want a full time education for your children at all costs- sod the potential risks to the children/their families/staff/ the community etc?

A fairer system for school return would have been some sort of rota for all year groups, at least everyone would have had some time in school with a teacher before the end of school year.

The government have made a mess of so many things. The way they have treated schools is appalling. I find it sad that parents are angry at schools when they are doing the best they can with what the government is saying they have to do.

canigooutyet · 17/06/2020 23:14

Schools don’t need to exist to provide an education for children.
There is the option of deregstering from the system and home schooling. Some fabulous support networks around the country. Many do this along time working etc.

Unless schools are fully open in September this is what I am doing. I am not prepared to let my sons gcse years suffer as a result. Until they fully open they will all suffer and leave with a couple of GCSEs.

And as for what Boris says in front of the screen, I’m not sure why people still take him seriously.

Are the scientists back yet?

Want to know what is happening in the UK read international stuff. A lot of it gets called fake media until it slowly starts to slip into MSM.

As another poster pointed out the question time stuff is an absolute farce and many reporters are talking openly about it. Same with the scientists hence I’m wondering if they are all back like they used to be.

snowballer · 17/06/2020 23:28

It's making me want to cry/scream with pure frustration with how absolutely every single thing the government touches turns to shit. All children need to be back at school now. Now now now. Why is this not at the top of the agenda EVERY SINGLE DAY.

I can already see nothing happening over the summer and the September "plan" for return to quietly melt away like ice in a warm puddle. And we'll just plod on brewing a massive mental health crisis while the government keeps umming and ahhing.

Marmaladey · 17/06/2020 23:34

@Elderflowervioletrose I am not angry at schools. Not at all. Schools have been badly let down by the government. I lay all the blame at the Government.

PurpleMystery · 17/06/2020 23:39

Yanbu. There is a campaign about schools www.usforthem.co.uk they also have a Facebook and a twitter.

I think all children should be allowed to go to school if parents feel safe enough but I don’t think it should be compulsory for quite some time yet.

namechangenumber2 · 17/06/2020 23:47

I’m getting so frustrated with the assertion that ‘reception and years 1 & 6 are back

Yes @DamitJanet , that's all I keep hearing, almost like BoJo can't understand what parents are moaning about. Our school has taken back 16 out of 90 of DS's school year (6), and I'm being made to feel like that should be good enough. His school are trying their best, as the headteacher said, the more children they take back the less teachers available to support the far more children left at home

Chaotic45 · 17/06/2020 23:47

@Elderflowervioletrose in answer to your questions if it's not safe for schools to open I'd like to see coordinated, sensible, well thought out home learning. I know some schools have offered this but many haven't. It's a poor substitute for the real thing, but done well it can be very effective.

freshcutflowers · 17/06/2020 23:49

What about @Elderflowervioletrose ‘s question everyone? Should social distancing end everywhere in the case of schools opening normally? Why should other workers have to socially distance if school staff do not have to?

namechangenumber2 · 17/06/2020 23:50

I am beginning to be judged actually. A stranger looked at my 9 and 12 year old today in town and said “oh are you one of those too scared to send them back, you really should you know?”

Exactly @Worriedkat , I've had many people assume that DS isn't back as I'm too scared for him to go, far from it! I'd have loved for him to be back, there's just no room

YardleyX · 17/06/2020 23:55

It’s simple, isn’t it.

Every other industry has had to adapt and change, or fail.

State Education has absolutely failed.

But nobody makes a profit out of it, so who’s bothered? 🤷‍♀️

namechangenumber2 · 17/06/2020 23:58

@Elderflowervioletrose , I'd like to see a rota system as minimum from September. I know of a couple of schools which are already doing it now ( which I didn't think was within the guidance), so all children are getting to go back one day a week. My SIL works at one of the schools and is going to be teaching 3 different bubbles over 3 days.

I'd also like there to be a lot more research into whether children do spread the virus. If they don't, is it safe for teachers to work with no social distance as long as they stay clear of other adults (teachers/parents etc)

M0ck0ni0n · 18/06/2020 06:21

I absolutely blame the government for this and not schools.

Wow I had no idea they were screening questions. They’ve said a couple of times they don’t know what will be asked( which I was v sceptical about) so are they lying? If they are that is shameful. If they’re not journalists are really falling short of their job

M0ck0ni0n · 18/06/2020 06:33

The BBC journalist yesterday was dreadful. Weak, couldn’t look more bored and practically smirked when coming back with a football question. It was as if he was saying yeah let’s get back to the important stuff. Maybe he was handpicked. It is certainly starting to look like that.

He was then interviews on the BBC after and still came across as pretty disinterested.

They sorted out support bubbles for the elderly on mental health grounds which carries a huge amount of risk for the demographic most at risk. Does nobody care about the mental health of millions of children? And as for the culture secretary banging in about culture returning sorting out mental health errr no it doesn’t, particularly for those not able to afford it or children. What children and teens need is a decent CAMHs system which was already not fit for purpose. The longer this goes on the less support children will have and the bigger need.
