Will the current guidelines make more people embrace all weathers?

I've always been an advocate of "no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes" and will happily go out whatever the weather. However, lots of people see rain and instantly think "can't go out, must drive children to school".

DS is out with some friends. It's just started pouring. In normal times they would probably retreat to a shop/someone's house, but they don't currently have those as options so they will just stay out and get wet. Made me wonder if the enforced bad weather socialising would make more people realise that, actually, a bit of rain isn't that bad?

Haha OP - I grew up with my mother saying that to me every time it rained and she wanted to go out for fresh air! I'd still complain every time.

In a selfish way, I hope not. My DS has become accustomed to having the park to himself when it's raining because there's not a single other person in sight!

I think you’re right! Had a lovely evening in a friend’s garden last week-we had warm clothes, raincoats and umbrellas and it was great. Normally we wouldn’t have dreamed of sitting outside in the drizzle!

AdoptedBumpkin · 17/06/2020 14:59

I'm still going to be limiting my time out in the rain. Although I am getting more used to it.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/06/2020 15:49

I think it will start to bother people queuing in the rain for supermarket shopping. Not surprisingly.

Chaotic45 · 17/06/2020 17:33

I work outside and continue in all weathers. Lots of outside workers stop when things get tricky but I'm not able to. I agree re. clothing- it's perfectly possible to have a lovely day outside in almost any weather providing your have the right gear and are healthy and well.

I don't know what the clothes are that can keep me warm on a 90 minute cycle ride at 5 degrees in the frosty rain. I can struggle not to get Raynaud's symptoms once the weather goes below 8 degrees or so. Or that will clean my muddy bike up afterwards. Sometimes the weather just is defeating.

Chaotic45 · 17/06/2020 18:38

@ragged ah I think I did add the caveat that of you have a health issue it's more tricky. Also I guess your bike's motion thrusts frosty rain into your face making it really tricky.

I'm happy working away in the cold and rain. I have many layers, excellent waterproofs including waterproof gloves and a super range of hats. I do keep moving which helps and I am able to change of my waterproofs get beaten.

I'm happy to go running in the rain (less so in cold winter rain) but mooching slowly or sitting around getting wet is not the greatest fun. Temperature matters.

The DCs did not get out this afternoon. The odds of being struck by lightning and dying of Covid are too similar Grin
We were too close for comfort when we got caught out on Sunday's humdinger of a storm when we got drenched in minutes as a dry path turned into a gushing river and thunder and lightning crashed around a few seconds apart. We didn't fancy a repeat on nice conducting bikes which was our original intention for today.

My sensory, trouser-phobic child is happy to sledge in his shorts though.

Nobodyputsdaisyinthecorner · 18/06/2020 02:10

It might make some do so but I fear others will just flout in bad weather. Our neighbours have been having friends round for bbqs every other night but when it rained on Sunday they all headed indoors and left the patio doors open as if that made it ok! (I only know because I was outside securing a stolid plastic greenhouse thing I bought to have a go at growing things in! I’m not nosey honest! 😂)

Biancadelrioisback · 18/06/2020 03:11

I love taking DS out for a splash in the rain! But when I do, we are coming straight home and will be able to be warm and dry within minutes. If I was, say, walking to work and it started pouring, I wouldn't be too happy about it. (Side note: I work an hour's drive away so I don't walk in but you get my point?)

Bad weather doesn't tend to stop us doing things, but rather lends itself towards us doing different things if that makes sense? It's lush to go down and feed the ducks in the rain or splash in puddles, but way better to play football or ride a bike in the sunshine.

lockdownalli · 18/06/2020 12:18

Good God No!!

I never ever go out in the rain! Luckily it hasn't rained much here at all in the past few weeks (South Coast) so it hasn't been an issue at all.

It wouldn't bother me to stay indoors for a couple of weeks if it was raining every day Grin

cologne4711 · 18/06/2020 12:21

I'll run in the rain (preferably not torrential) but am absolutely a fair weather cyclist (and wet roads can be quite dangerous for cyclists).

I prefer if people decide to stay at home if it rains and I can have a run without having to cross roads every few seconds.

Distiller91 · 18/06/2020 12:24

Me and my two year old had a great rainy beach walk this morning (very lucky to live next to it). So quiet and relaxing but obviously the rain has stopped others from travelling down for now.
