For helping to secure support for kids and families over the summer that they need.

I agree, he’s spoken up really persuasively.

AlwaysWithTheCherries · 16/06/2020 13:44

I agree. I've seen a lot of replies on his Twitter telling him to stick to football and others pointing out that children don't usually get fsm during the summer. But these are different times and actually, I think they should be getting them all year round anyway. I certainly wouldn't begrudge paying a little extra tax in one way or another to make sure children don't go hungry.

Fightthebear · 16/06/2020 13:44

Ah, just seen it’s worked!

Bloody good for him. Food poverty needs proper intervention, rights and support, not charity.

Fightthebear · 16/06/2020 13:45

FSM all year is a great, targeted intervention.

BarkandCheese · 16/06/2020 13:47

Good on him! He’s been great speaking about his own experiences and why this is so important.

Comefromaway · 16/06/2020 13:56

Huge credit to him for using his high profile to make a difference

PeskyRooks · 16/06/2020 14:00

Yeah what a star! I get the vouchers so has made a big difference to me.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/06/2020 14:02

Good for him, he has a high profile & he's used it for something genuinely important. I saw him on the news last night & he spoke very well.

SilverLiningSearching · 16/06/2020 14:05

A great ambassador for the sport and excellent role model. His mum must be bursting with pride. Well done indeed.

RedBrownBrick · 16/06/2020 14:07

👏 well done him

ChikiTIKI · 16/06/2020 14:13

Great news 😀 I think the vouchers should be available in all of the school holidays. This is the kind of thing I hope for my taxes to go towards.

KenDodd · 16/06/2020 14:29

Yes, well done him.

But.
There is a much bigger issue here. I don't like fsm, they're like food banks for children. Nobody should be so poor in twenty first century Britain, that they can't afford to feed their children properly. Now I know there's a few feckless parents but that's not the majority of them on fsm. I suppose schools could just give free meals to all the children to catch those fee without stigma or shame and there's an argument for just feeding them all (and the teachers) for free even if no children have feckless parents and they can all afford the meals.

Anyway, personally I'd like to see an end to fsm because nobody should be that poor. Unfortunately some parents (both working and non working) are that poor so well done MR. Longer term, we should focus of eliminating such extreme poverty so no child needs fsm.

BigChocFrenzy · 16/06/2020 14:36

Brilliant, Marcus Rashford ! 👏🏼

He didn't pull up the ladder after him; he pulled others up the ladder
A lot of kids saved from going hungry this summer vacation

Yes, kids shouldn't need fsm,
but we should deal with the world as it is, not as we dream it should be

bloodyhellsbellsx · 16/06/2020 14:39

Good for him! So nice to see a young sport star using their platform for good.

mum2jakie · 16/06/2020 14:39

Great news

Tippexy · 16/06/2020 14:41

It's a nice suggestion but how are they planning to make sure the vouchers are spent on what really matters?

My0My · 16/06/2020 14:42

Dele Ali supports Magic Breakfasts to help provide breakfasts for DC that don’t get them. Young footballers are not as one dimensional as people think they are. They deserve praise for what they do and not jibes because of their wealth. Lots of these young men give substantial sums to chairs and like ones that reflect their own backgrounds and interests. Do well done all of them.

The gift cards are only valid for purchases of food and groceries. No system will ever be failsafe but they have tried.

Exactly this. No country should ever tolerate children going hungry for one second.

Parents who choose to spend vouchers on things other than the food their children need are abusive - abusive parents exist regardless of whether vouchers are given out or not. The fact that some parents are abusive is not a reason to deny other children access to food.

Others will defraud the system and take advantage of it. That happens in literally every system out there - big companies take advantage of tax systems to get out of paying hundreds of millions of pounds. The fact that some people might defraud the system for a measly few hundred pounds is, again, not a reason to deny children access to food.

CrunchyCarrot · 16/06/2020 17:10

Fantastic, well done Marcus!

runningon · 16/06/2020 18:20

Brilliant thanks Marcus.
Sad that it took the government so long to try and help innocent hungry children, but that's the Tories for you!
It's sad that so many families can't afford to feed their children properly, tragic doesn't even begin to describe it.
We should be supporting those children & families.
I don't have children, and I'm not rich, just average, but
I can afford some of my tax money to go on this.
