Covid-19 test for young child: research study

ToothFairyNemesis · 15/06/2020 15:30

Have just received a letter for my 7 year old inviting them to be tested for Covid19 for a research study. Has anyone else had a letter for their child?
Also has anyone tested their child , were they distressed or ok?
Am unsure whether to sign up or not.

Yes my son did it two weeks ago, absolutely fine. He’s 10 and obviously it came back negative.

DS(8) was tested about a month ago for an Imperial research project. We talked about it with him, explaining the test would be quite unpleasant but pretty quick then left the decision up to him. He wanted to do it; he likes Operation Ouch and has seen people helping with research on there so think that helped!

He said the test was horrible, particularly the nasal swab, but he wasn't too traumatised.

Oh, and yes it was negative and he's been telling his relatives how he's helped fight corona, which is quite sweet!

Yes for 8 year old, only other selected person I know in RL is also another 8 yo.

We received the letter inviting our 9 year old to take part in the research. We have decided not to as we feel he would get distressed at the testing, especially as it is a home test we would need to carry out. Also he has form for vomitting quite easily so don't really want to trigger that.
I do feel slightly guilty for not participating, but the letter does clearly state it is voluntary.

That’s positive that children have had it and not been distressed, @CornishYarg my ds loves operation Ouch that a great idea I could link it to that.
@Gnome134 I struggling with feeling guilt- if everyone refused for their dc to do it the research wouldn’t be affected. But you are rights it’s voluntary and plenty of people will.
I will speak to ds and see what he wants to do.
Thanks everyone.

Yes we got a letter today for our 8 year old. I’m not sure yet what we’ll do.

ToothFairyNemesis · 15/06/2020 16:37

Yes - we got a letter inviting our DD(5) to take part but have also decided not to as we think the nasal swab would be distressing for her.
