Anyone's school taking non-keyworker kids outside of YR/1/6?

A friend is being taken off furlough as of Monday. However she is a lone parent with a child not in the accepted year group.

Her ds's dad is not on the scene. Friend works term time only 9.30-2.30 so has not required childcare ever. She is on minimum wage.

Is it worth her calling her son's school and seeing if they have capacity? Or is this cheeky fuckery? I'm not entirely sure what else to suggest, as even if she is able to find a CM with space, she simply couldn't afford to suddenly start paying 140quid a week etc for the care. It's over half her income.

I've suggested she call his school, ask work to keep her on furlough, or even if from 1st July they can put her on part time furlough.

Good to know the school suggestion wasn't totally ridiculous.

Thanks.

Yes, my school is open to other years from Monday to help parents get back to work.

Marmaladey · 12/06/2020 18:28

Our primary school is still only key workers, they’ve just tried to get more in rather than open up to year groups.

Concerned7777 · 12/06/2020 18:30

I did. My 2 went back on Monday 9-3. Neither of us key workers but both working out the home full time. I just emailed the head teacher, I'll be honest I was expecting them to say no but they had spaces for both so welcomed them back. It's worth asking you'll be no worse off if they say no.

Emms89 · 12/06/2020 19:45

My child is in reception and can't get a place as the keyworkers children have filled all the bubbles. My partner is working and I'm furloughed - supposed to return on Monday. I've spoken to our headteacher and she said they won't be accepting any more children but fingers crossed it will be back to normal for September 😟

BunsyGirl · 12/06/2020 19:54

Yes. My DS1 has gone back to year 5 this week. Years 2, 3 and 4 are returning over the next three weeks. It’s a private school though.

cheninblanc · 12/06/2020 20:13

Yes year 9, my daughter been going two days a week since the start

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 12/06/2020 20:41

Yes. And no I don’t think it’s CFery, she should ask school....

wendz86 · 12/06/2020 21:00

Our school are adding year 2 and 5 on 22nd and year 3 and 4 will hopefully get a couple of weeks too .

WatchoutfortheROUS · 12/06/2020 21:07

I wish our school was adding more. They've made it clear they're full until at least September, no attempts to widen up to other years. Fair enough, but I'd be less frustrated if the provision for those at home was half decent

TimeForLunch · 12/06/2020 21:51

Our (independent) school is taking remaining year groups for one week so my year 4 ds will thankfully get something, albeit not for long. It's definitely worth asking. I've heard of several local schools taking a few extra children as they had space.

lockdownstress · 12/06/2020 21:53

Independent school I know of is at taking y3-6 back full time from June 22nd. Have said they will do zones, bubbles etc but we have to accept that the size of the classrooms means desks won't be quite 2m apart.

Sweetpea84 · 12/06/2020 22:00

Yes my husband is a key worker I’m not and my daughter yr 3 and son school nursery are back 3 times a week. They were actively asking parents to come forward last week as they have spaces though speaking to the school earlier they are nearly full.

LeSquigh · 13/06/2020 00:35

My DS goes back next week - he’s Y4 and the school have a lot of spare classrooms and so anyone who wants to go back can, all year groups. Most are.

Worriedmum999 · 13/06/2020 00:56

Our private school is having all years back on a rota so about 3 days at a time

Oblomov20 · 13/06/2020 07:43

This whole thread is an absolute disgrace. How the Government isn't prioritising this, and doing 'anything' necessary to facilitate getting as many children back as possible, I'll never know.

Coffeeandcrumpet · 13/06/2020 07:50

Our school is having all year groups back, but each class is split into bubbles with each bubble attending 1 day in 3.

StrawberryBlondeStar · 13/06/2020 07:50

@AveEldon same here. Parents who pulled their children out prior to lockdown (because they had a SAHP and could manage this) now coming back as “keyworker children” (cause working parent is in “financial services”).

Again private school so the school are being liberally in their interpretation of keyworker children. What annoys me is that the school provided no keyworker provision for half a term (so that impacted us actual keyworkers) so they could furlough all the support staff and provide a discount for the above families demanding one.

MrsWombat · 13/06/2020 09:20

My one is looking at upping the number of vulnerable kids and bringing back year 2.

Aragog · 13/06/2020 12:15

We've only got room for the KW and vulnerable families. Those numbers have more than tripled since half term. We don't have the physical classroom space for even the eligible years, let alone others.
We were due to invite reception back on Monday but due to the increase in Kw numbers we've had to shelve those plans.

Badmemorieshouse · 13/06/2020 12:16

Yes year 5 from next week

Oblomov20 · 13/06/2020 14:06

Year 6 haven't got places here. I'm so furious I'm struggling to control my anger.
This is all being handled so badly it's frightening.

Oblomov20 · 13/06/2020 14:09

How are all these schools managing it? I have no idea why Ds2's primary has so few children. There must be reasons, I just don't know what they are.

But what ever the reason is surely the county council and the school should be working towards increasing the places available for more children what ever the problems which are presumably unique to this school?

SandieCheeks · 13/06/2020 14:46

My DC’s infant school is managing it by only offering 2 days a week and uptake is very low - 10 out of 50 in my DS’s year.

The junior school has a Year 3/4 class, Year 5 class and 4 Year 6 classes each with 10 children and they are now full - 60 out of 240 children in school.

My sister’s children however didn’t get places at their school in a different town as uptake was too high.

pellesco · 13/06/2020 14:56

Ask the school. I'm a teacher and we have just done this for a single parent in my class. The child is now coming in 3 days a week. We want to help as much as we can, however with 3 year groups back and 4 key worker 'bubbles' we are almost 'full'.
