I have self isolated ( And live by myself) since mid March - stuck to the rules. My son has dropped shopping off and I have seen my grandsons through the window. As of the weekend I was looking forward to going to their house. He has let slip that my dil - who I love very much - has been visited by her parents and I think they have been to see their other daughter And son in law Who works and who has a small child. Not sure how much social isolation went on. That was their choice and their decision - I do like them but strictly from a health point of view - I don’t know what to do as it broadens in a way the people I come into contact with

Are you shielding? Can you visit them just in the garden?

No I am not shielding but I am in remission and prone to infection so have been taking care. I just wanted to be in a house and hug my grandsons.

If they isolate and distance property for 2 weeks, you could see them safely. If they haven't been distancing so far, are they willing to do that?

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 11/06/2020 23:34

Do you know if your DIL's parents visited inside their home or whether it was a socially-distanced visit in their garden?

If it was in their home then, I would recommend not seeing them because, as they've also visited their other daughter and family, you would be opening yourself up to multiple households. The rules don't allow for that. If that is the case then your DIL and son have been really silly as this now impacts negatively on you.

Do your son or DIL work outside the home? Are either of your grandsons at school? Or would it be possible for the family to self-isolate for a period before seeing you? 14 days would be very safe. 11 days+ would be pretty safe. Could you discuss with your son? I suggest you make clear that you want him to be honest with you about whether they are self-isolating so that you can make an informed decision.

Another point to bear in mind if you're weighing up risk is that infection rates vary a lot between areas. Attached map gives you some idea, though figures are estimates.
