What will schools catch up be like over summer?

BJ is saying the summer will be catch up for all kids - or just some?

I wonder what this will mean.

Absolutely nothing like you might be hoping for.

Harpingon · 10/06/2020 22:59

Maybe online until September, then part time school for all until Christmas and hopefully back to normal in January.

Cherryghost · 10/06/2020 23:03

Is he saying work will get continued over summer holidays?

SallyLovesCheese · 10/06/2020 23:24

This is why him announcing these things then leaving us hanging for a week is incredibly frustrating.

PotteryLottery · 10/06/2020 23:33

I think the teaching unions will have something to say about this.

MrsFogi · 10/06/2020 23:33

There will be f*k all over summer. Then fk all in September and maybe something resembling normality in January and lots of state secondary school kids' futures will have been f*ked.

Appuskidu · 10/06/2020 23:35

I can almost guarantee that it won’t be what you’re hoping for.

bubbleup · 10/06/2020 23:44

BBC bitesize and the Oak Academy

flumposie · 10/06/2020 23:46

It won't be teachers in school teaching.

WorstGovtEver · 11/06/2020 00:07

It means he blurted it out, landed Williamson in it again, got people's hopes up (like last time when he announced schools opening more widely to take the heat off Cummings) and we will have a week or two where they come up with unworkable plans without consulting teachers or parents, leak them to the papers on and off and then absolutely fck all will happen.

And then in 4 yrs or so, the country will elect them again to make sure we are all even more fcked than ever before.

WorstGovtEver · 11/06/2020 00:13

The rest of the govt and civil servants must dread Wednesdays, the one day a week he can be arsed to work. Every Wednesday, bimbling out more nonsense that they have to then try and sort out.

LucyLastik · 11/06/2020 00:18

It won't be teachers in school teaching.

That's right. Some of us have earned this break as we've been working all out and through our other (unpaid) holidays.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 11/06/2020 00:20

Why bother speculating? You'll find out for definite next week.

ineedaholidaynow · 11/06/2020 00:25

Gavin Williamson talked about a long term plan yesterday in Parliament, but didn’t give any further details. So he knew about it before Boris mentioned it today. He also vaguely said something about summer holiday schoolwork in a speech to Parliament in May. So something has been on the cards for some time, it is just a pity they don’t like to discuss it with schools beforehand!

BigChocFrenzy · 11/06/2020 00:39

I wish Boris would talk to his own ministers to check that what he announces is actually feasible

  • and that they would first consult the experts, like .... um, head teachers, SLT ....

Also talk to Whitty to understand the new rules before he announces them, as with singles mixing today.

We always need someone afterwards to correct what he said explain what Boris meant
and it's not usually the same as what he said first

blue25 · 11/06/2020 00:41

Well teachers will not be teaching over the summer. I can guarantee that.

Astabarista · 11/06/2020 00:41

I doubt Boris has any idea. He just says stuff for the sake of it to please people.

pontypridd · 11/06/2020 00:47

I’m not hopeful for anything anymore - just curious.

Probably something to do with Oak Academy or some online service.

Blackbear19 · 11/06/2020 02:00

BBC Bitesize and possibly programs on CBBC. That's my guess.

sleepydragons · 11/06/2020 02:55

Whatever it is, it'll be the students who least need it that will be the ones who access it. Those most in need will be, on the whole, the less likely to access it.

Weepinggreenwillow · 11/06/2020 08:02

It will be some hastily cobbled together half baked provision which does not effectively meet anyones needs and wont really work, and will quite possibly have to be withdrawn half way through due to "unfroseen difficulties" The whole aim of it is simply to distract us all from the fact the the government have no plan in place for Spetember and dont seem to be doing anything about it. So when we get to Spet and kids are still not abck at school they tout the "but we gave you summer school" line and expect us all to be glad.

Weepinggreenwillow · 11/06/2020 08:02

September - sorry ignore typos. Typing in anger!

Barbie222 · 11/06/2020 08:04

I guess playworkers supervising bite size? Teachers will be too expensive.

SushiGo · 11/06/2020 08:14

Nothing probably. Or, more likely, more content on the BBC.

Then they can save they've dealt with the issue of kids falling behind and it's parents fault if they are still struggling completely ignoring that most kids who behind are so because their parents aren't able to give them support with their learning (either because they are working or other factors)

It won't be school provision.

I have no idea what will happen for work out of home keyworker kids? There's still no sign of summer clubs opening here.
