Can coronavirus live on bakery items like bread?

Husband wants to order bread/scones from the local bakery. I’ve been putting it off for weeks as too worried about bare hands handling the goods etc. Is this a real concern or just my anxiety speaking?

I've eaten loads of bakery stuff, ain't no virus getting between me and my pain au raisin

Doesn't the bakery use tongs?

I'd be surprised if any shop assistants are picking up food with their bare hands

I heard that even if bread etc did had corona virus on it, once you eat it, your stomach acid kills the virus therefore you don’t get ill. Sure it’s fine.

There is no evidence you can get it from food.

It’s not from a bakery it’s our village mill which also does fresh bread and scones.

Not sure if the bakers in the milk are wearing face masks, using tongs.

Nothing would come between me and cake. Seriously though, any place that's producing food to sell has to do so safely and hygienically, you'd be very unlucky to catch it from food.

I wondered about this as DP has a sourdough habit and the loaves are just on the shelves and you have to pick it up and put it in a brown bag yourself. However, we must have eaten 20+ since lockdown started and we’ve been fine

Ok..I’ll bite the bullet and order but I might put in the freezer for a week or so before letting the family eat it..

Freezing food won't kill coronavirus. In fact, I'm sure I read that the virus can live for up to two years in a freezer. However, the chance of you catching anything from your food is very low.

I wouldn't worry. I eat stuff from supermarket including the bakery. Never even occurred to me. I'm sure virus wont live long on any surface. Mind you l don't worry about post or parcels so maybe I'm not best person to adk

No. Just like you can’t catch it from a tin of beans, the gas bill, or an Amazon parcel.

I recommend the More or Less program and podcast on Radio 4 for several excellent features on risk. Likewise, just stopping and thinking how likely it is that you would be one of c.5000 people out of a population of 60m that would catch it on any given day. The odds are very slim indeed.

We've had plenty of bakery stuff. No issues at all. Just do it.

Freezing preserves a lot of things by the way, including some viruses. Cooking kills them, but freezing not so much as others have already pointed out.

You can go to crazy on sort of thing. That way lies madness. Just get some nice fresh bakery stuff and eat it while it is fresh. Surely that is what you buy it for. Not to freeze first.

Just buy it and it eat fresh.
There hasn't been a single case of someone catching it from food....the same goes for letters and parcels
