Are you doing anything to get ready for a 'second wave'?

I know the jury is out on whether we're going to have one - but are you doing anything to prepare in case we do?

Lockdown #1 (with a period of isolation in the middle when the kids had symptoms) has felt pretty challenging for us - and that's in lovely weather with a good network of friends for virtual socialising. We don't have any family nearby and I had a baby at the end of last year.

I know we have had it very easy compared to so many, for which I'm very grateful. But that said, I'm feeling pretty apprehensive about the possibility of doing it over again in the bleakness of winter. I can't really think of things I could be doing to get us a bit more prepared - does anyone have any tips?

Sorry! Sent before I meant to. I don't think there will ever be a 'lockdown' like we've seen as the country just can't afford it. Also, I doubt they would get the buy in from the country especially over Christmas.

feelingverylazytoday · 09/06/2020 12:59

Just keeping my immune system as healthy as possible really.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 09/06/2020 13:05

Stockpiling loo paper, washing powder, detergent, sanitiser, and canned goods - all stuff I would use anyway. Buying a new fridge that isn't on its last legs. Not stockpiling wine and chocolate because I've realised that this does not work.

Ponoka7 · 09/06/2020 13:06

I don't think we'll lock down again, either.

I'm losing weight, getting healthier and I'm going to start ordering extra tinned stuff and we are sorting out Christmas early, so over winter we limit movement as much as possible. We all have to use public transport, but not every day.

Sparklingbrook · 09/06/2020 13:06

No, I didn't do anything special for the first wave and was absolutely fine.

HairyFloppins · 09/06/2020 13:07

No.

Divoc2020 · 09/06/2020 13:09

Not especially, although we were talking about doing things like haircuts as soon as we're able and not leaving it for 2-3 weeks as that's precisely when things will have flared up again.

Hagisonthehill · 09/06/2020 13:20

We will have food shortages again soon as prepers get ready for no deal Brexit.
I am going to try and enjoy summer first. The confusion and panic in the Autumn when flu and colds arrive and people move inside meet, doesn't bear thinking about.

Drivingdownthe101 · 09/06/2020 13:24

We didn’t prepare for this one and managed to get hold of everything we needed, so no I won’t be preparing for a second one (especially as I don’t think there will be another lockdown).

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 09/06/2020 13:41

I've always bought extra when shopping, things like tinned food, cleaning supplies and toilet roll so I'll continue to do that.

I've also bitten the bullet and cleared out our packed garage and finally replaced our old chest freezer.

I'll get ready for Christmas early and I'm buying lots of craft stuff, paper and pens for the inevitable attempt at home schooling in the next months. Oh and I'm going to buy clothes a bigger size up for my dc.

I'm generally quite organised anyway but I intend to be even more organised now.

The preppers will already be ready. The clue is in the name.

frozendaisy · 09/06/2020 16:05

Just making sure DC1's eczema lotions and potions are more than stocked up. Not worried about the grocery side we could always get something and I think the systems will be in place if needed again as it was just a bit of a shock to the supply system this time.

But seriously can't see a second wave being "bigger" as most people will have an element of distancing for the foreseeable which has to make a difference surely.

PicsInRed · 09/06/2020 16:09

Consolidating finances in preparation for economic turmoil.

That's the real "second wave".

Quite. Preppers are ready. Preppers have been ready for years. Non-preppers panickers will cause the damage. Again.
Drivingdownthe101 · 09/06/2020 16:15

Again? I didn’t prep or panic buy this time round. Just did my usual shop at the usual times. If they didn’t have something, I bought something else instead. No drama, and certainly didn’t cause anyone any damage!

NudgeUnit · 09/06/2020 19:25

Do you mean, we will have food shortages again if the transition period is not extended, because of the no-deal Brexit? The pandemic shortages will seem like nothing by comparison, as supply lines and imports won't be able to be protected in the same way.

I think everyone would be wise to prep for a second wave (and a no-deal Brexit). I also don't think there'll be a lockdown on this scale again, but that doesn't mean that individual households won't have to self-isolate for weeks at a time while people are ill or waiting to see if they develop symptoms. If you feel confident supermarket deliveries will see you through then fair enough, but if your location or needs mean that's not an option, or not a complete solution, then I certainly expect that prepping will pay off when the second wave comes.

CaptainMerica · 09/06/2020 19:39

I'm rearranging DS's bedroom to set up a decent desk, laptop, etc, on the assumption of at least another 6 months of home schooling. (In Scotland, so I already know he will be part time in August).

Keeping stocked up in craft supplies, toiletries, etc.

I always have a couple of weeks worth of tinned food, pasta, rice etc over winter in case of snow disruption. I won't let it run down over summer this year.

I don't think there will be a second wave leading to another lockdown. I think the increase in cases will be steady and slow, and they will be able to keep a lid on it with more minor adjustments to the rules.

I will try to be prepared to be wrong though.

yearinyearout · 09/06/2020 19:45

This exact question was asked a few days ago.

OxanaVorontsova · 09/06/2020 19:52

First wave isn't over yet tbh

oralengineer · 09/06/2020 20:52

I failed to prep for this wave. I didn’t stock up on loo roll. So far I haven’t run out of anything apart from patience.

Jessuk86 · 09/06/2020 22:19

We are desperately trying to get our extension finished while we can get hold of everything...even though plaster is still a pain to get!! At least then if we have another lockdown of sorts it will hopefully be more relaxing as it's been hell on earth WFH having a 3 year old and 1 year old home all the time and a half built extension! I didnt have time to think of loo roll and we got caught short with that....thank god I generally bulk buy baby wipes or we would have cut up an old towel Haha!!
