So it’s going to be back to school for privately educated children whilst state kids get thrown under the bus

So no more primary children in and secondary left until Sep at the earliest.Of course this gov aren’t bothered about the nation’s children as they prioritise the hospitality sector over schools. Most of their children will be in private schools getting an education.

What an utter shambles.

Why not temp mobile classrooms on the school field?

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 09/06/2020 07:46

Although I am no fan of private education- I think you will have to find another fight than this one OP.

I have just had a look at our local private schools (4 prep and 5 secondary - of which 2 are very important and expensive Public schools)

Only one is open. A prep that has a pre prep attached . They are open to yr R, 1 & 6 . The same as state schools. All the senior schools have already got notices on their websites to say they won't be opening until September (at the earliest)

OverZoomed · 09/06/2020 07:46

Yes, I have one child in each sector and the difference is stark. Full timetable with zoom lessons, immediate email contact with teachers and full homework / marking plus lots of online clubs / activities versus about an hour of work sent via email and a little bit of feedback (once or twice a week).

If the private school carries on like this there will be little educational impact (though emotionally and socially it’s hard), if the state school carries on like this (or gets worse, understandably, as form teachers go back to cover bubbles) we will need to start teaching maths and English ourselves over the summer.

AncientandPregnant · 09/06/2020 07:46

Write to the Unions as well as your MP
& the Secretary of State for Education. A lot of this is in the hands of teaching Unions.

Bluewater1 · 09/06/2020 07:47

We have heard nothing from our private school about years 2-5 returning....

Fruitsaladjelly · 09/06/2020 07:47

Not sure where you heard this. Ds is at private boarding school, they break up in two weeks, there would be no point going back to face to face learning at this point.

Walkingwounded · 09/06/2020 07:48

Who do we write to in the union, Ancient?

Bloomburger · 09/06/2020 07:48

Have you visited many private schools?

They don't have huge classrooms. Many are in old buildings and have small classes so they don't need huge amounts of space.

Even year 10 & 12 are not going back full time at my son's school and the rest of the secondary school won't be going back until September.

AncientandPregnant · 09/06/2020 07:48

For those not sure where this news is from. It was an announcement yesterday that going forward each school can decide who to take back. www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-52969679

S1nkorSw1m · 09/06/2020 07:51

It isn’t the fault of unions. Gov set the guidelines and are supposed to govern. They are being paid £££ every year to govern not shove responsibility onto the shoulders of over worked heads whilst they run off to hide and their kids are provided with an education.

My DC are in a private school. The school is following the Government’s guidance so none of mine are back. They get online lessons.

Gfplux · 09/06/2020 07:53

Luxembourg
All nursery, primary and secondary schools are now back.

This started on Monday May 4th

Monday May 4th “Premier” ( the final year before Uni) returned to School.
Monday May 11th over two weeks gradual opening of the rest of secondary schools with classes split in two. One week at home one week in class.
Monday May 25th over two weeks primary schools and Crèche have opened.

Admittedly Luxembourg Education has not been underfunded like Britain.

Parsley1234 · 09/06/2020 07:54

I posted on secondary this week saying that my sons boarding school earliest opening is sept and that the internationals will be there for the whole year it looks like. Also if there is an outbreak the boarding house will be quarantined and no one will be going home. The prep school has opened for R 1 and 6

SimonJT · 09/06/2020 07:55

Where I live the majority of state primary schools are open to all R, yr1, yr6 and keyworker children. Very few public primaries are as ‘open’ as the state ones and some are still completely closed. The only one that has mananged to open fully to R, yr1 and yr6 has only managed it because two classes are taken outside, fine in dry weather, won’t work if it rains.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 09/06/2020 07:56

I'm also angry about this. Ds mental health is suffering hugely and until 3 months ago he was a really stable, laid back and happy child. He's now angry and sullen and I can't remember the last time any of us slept for a full night. School provision has been poor, a bit of online work and worksheets but no feedback at all.
When i go back to work he'll be able to go to his childminder who has children from 4 schools which is apparently fine to mix with, but he can't access education in his own school. Its absolute nonsense that adults will soon be able to go to the pub a d Primark but kids can't play cricket, go to school or even go on a playground. Shameful lack of care from our government.

S1nkorSw1m · 09/06/2020 07:57

Alana I bet the online lessons and support your dc is getting is a world away from that which state educated kids are getting. I’ve seen the difference on here. Private schools have to prove their worth for the £££££ parents are paying.

@Nihiloxica

We’d also be the only country in the world to do so, if we did...

Um... nope.

Not even close. But nice try.

Do you not read news from around the world?

Name one country in its post-lockdown phase, that has returned all pupils, full-time, with no social distancing measures in place?
Mintjulia · 09/06/2020 07:59

The guidance is for all schools.

The difference is that private schools need to get pupils through the door to maintain their budgets while state school don’t have that pressure. Plus teachers in private schools are less unionised.

Head teachers were complaining that being required to open was unworkable and dangerous in some cases, so now head teachers can make the final call and some people still aren’t happy.

Given the varying rates of cv19 in different areas, this policy seems more sensible.

Ironmanrocks · 09/06/2020 07:59

I think you are wrong. Private schools are not allowed residential students back yet, and the junior R, Y1 and Y6 are the only ones in school. Y10 are hopefully going back soon, but we break up at the beginning of July so will be missing out on the extra month there as well. We are working to government guidelines, as are other schools.

Groundhogdayzz · 09/06/2020 08:00

Private schools have to follow government guidelines, so up until now could only open the year groups the government allowed. Even if it changes now, they break up earlier for summer, so only had a few weeks left anyway.

Hibbetyhob · 09/06/2020 08:01

The unions have asked and asked the government for meetings. Currently schools are opening as much as government guidance allows. This is not on the unions, however much the government would like you to think it is.

MarshaBradyo · 09/06/2020 08:01

On R4 now. So depressing.

puffinkoala · 09/06/2020 08:01

Bollocks they are

My children go to private schools and head has issues letter to confirm that private schools are required to follow precisely the state school situation

No need to swear. The government guidance out today will allow flexibility, so yes, private schools will absolutely be back to normal as soon as they can.

I am wondering what is going to happen to Y6s - are they just going to be ignored in September? Or will they go back to school as new Y7s and current Y10s and Y12s STILL ignored, let alone the other secondary years?

And what happens in primaries? Y1s become Y2 and get ditched, we have new YRs who will be ok, new Y1 who's been in this half term and Y5s will finally get into school, but again, Y2-new Y5 will be ditched too.

Hibbetyhob · 09/06/2020 08:02

*meetings and plans

CatkinToadflax · 09/06/2020 08:03

DS2 is in a private school. Neither his school nor the other local privates are going back before September. They are however providing full school days online.

Our family’s experience of CAMHS is that they never do anything, virus or no virus. 🙄
