My MOT is due to run out July 7th. What are the new rules?

If you pop your car reg into the DVLA website it should confirm whether you have an extension and the new date.

You need to check on line nearer the time. They are updating thr car records around 7 days before they are due
Full info on gov.uk

Yes 6 month extension to get the MOT done but you must make sure the vehicle is road worthy so tyres/bulbs/wipers/breaks all the things you can check yourself need to be maintained

MyfriendJane · 08/06/2020 13:50

I put it in just then and it still says ''July 7th' so it will be a week before it updates?
Could really do with not spending on car right now

MOT is just over £50. Any issues your car might have could get worse over time and end up more costly. Using the extension may not save you any money.

I've had my car for a year and done 30,000 miles,
Last year my old car had a service and paid quite a bit of money and 2 weeks later had broken down and literally was not worth the price to fix it,
So no matter what, there's a chance of cars needing fixing

And it's done 30,000 miles I means,
I bought it 24,000 miles and it's now on 30,000

I've had my car for a year and done 30,000 miles,

This literally means nothing.

Last year my old car had a service and paid quite a bit of money and 2 weeks later had broken down and literally was not worth the price to fix it,
So no matter what, there's a chance of cars needing fixing

That was my point. The sooner the better because if there is something brewing it could either be dangerous or more costly to fix one the issue has been left to develop.

Sorry, I don't mean to sound bad. I just believe that delaying an MOT should be an absolute last resort.

MyfriendJane · 08/06/2020 14:13

@carexfairex but i usually get regular MOT and service checks hence why I was disappointed when I paid for a service and 2 weeks later the car was scrap so now I think going a couple of months until I know i have regular income seems suitable

does the MOT extension now mean that the MOT will be due from the date shown guess it does? ie if the MOT was originally due in June it's now December so will be December each year.

nitgel · 08/06/2020 14:26

myfiendjane, it will update soon, mine just has and was due 14 June and it now says 12 dec but it was showing 14 june last week.

ClientQ · 08/06/2020 14:27

@nitgel yes
You can have it done up to a month before and it will keep the same date so you don't lose any

nitgel · 08/06/2020 14:45

thanks Client

Garages are reopening, but they are busy, just booked our car in for MOT next week was due beginning May, but nothing was open then, it's been dead on the road since before lockdown, do we know it needs work. Best to get MOT done as soon as it's due because surely you don't want to drive around in a road-unworthy car.

Drivingdownthe101 · 08/06/2020 16:14

MOT’s check safety. If an MOT identifies that something needs doing, it means your car isn’t as safe as it could be.
