Breaking 5 mile limit? Wales.

Seen an article in iNews (don't know how to do clicky link but copy and pasted link at bottom)

5 mile limit likely to be extended well into July. Snippet says this is to prevent the scenes we've seen on English beaches.

Mid July will mark 5 months since my 1 year old son has seen anyone other than me and his dad. He has no memory of anyone other than us. He has family in Wales, 30 miles away and 60 miles away. We will not go to beaches. We will not stop for fuel away from our local area. We will bring our own food.

Is this that bad? Our families miss him so much.

We are in Scotland and to be honest I've just ignored the 5 mile rule. I cant even get to a supermarket within 5 miles so have always been driving more than the limit anyway.
Just go, and be careful!

I’m in rural North Wales. I’ve been sticking to the lockdown rules, but not the 5 Mile rule. It’s a bit arbitrary and only workable if you live somewhere like Cardiff. There isn’t even a shop 5 miles away. I travel approx 13 miles to visit my family. Haven’t been stopped once, even when I went on a long drive to give my car a proper run as it had been standing for about 2 months.

YellowEllis · 08/06/2020 13:01

He's announced that the 5 mile rule will be in place well into July at the earliest. Its insane and wrong to keep families apart this long. We get to watch families in every other part of the UK meet up at a social distance yet we're being punished! I understand they need to protect the beaches, but follow Scotland's lead! 5 miles for exercise, further for family. It's wrong.

Just ignore it op, it’s not as if you are going to the beach. If you are sticking to the rest of the rules and taking adequate precautions and maintaining social distancing then there’s really Feck all difference Travelling 10, 20, 30 miles as opposed to 5.

MrsTannyFickler · 08/06/2020 13:06

I'm in Wales and 4 out of 5 in our house are imoacted by the 5 mile rule. Only my youngest daughter now 18, knows anyone within 5 miles because she went to school here.

My job and Welsh life was 20 miles away before lockdown.
My family is 70 miles away in England.
It's shit. I totally get it.

We've been out once a week for shopping and exhausted every possible local walk. We're all going a bit nuts tbh.

They are actually stopping people in Wales. This past week we had to move 2 of our older kids (19 and 21) out if their uni accommodation in 2 different cities in England as their tenancy agreements had come to an end and they were being evicted. We had relevant paperwork and screenshots on phones which was just as well. My husband got stopped on his way driving my son last Monday morning and I got stopped on my way back early evening from taking my daughter on Saturday. We both got stopped at different locations but still in Wales.

Just because we've been in lockdown for bloody ages isn't a green card to flex the rules sadly. Were all feeling it for different reasons. It harder now because we see life on England getting back to some kind of normal and amongst my English friends there does seem to be a fuck it, attitude now. Lots 9f people bending the rules to meet their own frustrations and needs.

CheshireCats · 08/06/2020 14:05

Yellow where has Drakeford announced that it will continue well into July? Please can you link x

hippobump · 08/06/2020 14:15

5 miles is nothing in North Wales. Most of our nearest amenities are at least 15 - 20 miles away.

I travelled just over 30 miles to see my parents for the first time recently. No sign of police stopping etc.

I can understand not wanting thousands of people flocking to beauty spots etc, but 5 miles is such a random distance, and totally irrelevant to most people in the rural north.

Lord Newborough has been discussing this recently:

MaxNormal · 08/06/2020 14:19

That's a joke, you poor people in Wales. I'm in Scotland, have been ignoring the 5 mile rule and just not heading for the same bunch of spots that half of Glasgow did in the warm weather.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/06/2020 14:22

The rules apply to all of us. Everyone is missing their family. We haven’t been able to visit my 84 year old MIL as she lives in a different part of Wales.
So I think you would be completely wrong to do this, it is categorically against the rules, and if everyone breaks them then Wales will see a huge upsurge in cases.

hippobump · 08/06/2020 14:42

The 'rules' aren't hard & fast anyway. The following are from the Welsh gov website, and although they're encouraging people not to travel far there is plenty of scope for personal judgement.

justjessie · 08/06/2020 15:12

I'm in wales and have been regularly driving further than five miles to get to my local supermarket!
Honestly, I think if your car is registered in Wales the police probably won't be interested. Cars registered in England would prob be flagged up by their ANPR machines. I mean, I'm just guessing all of this but just go!

justjessie · 08/06/2020 15:14

Ok sorry I just read the rest of the thread and see people are getting stopped regularly.
Hasn't happened to me so I guess I was being anecdotal.

"In Walea you have to start and finish exercise at home and are only allowed to travel 5 miles to visit people"
You can go further if its essential like you need to care for someone. Are your parents elderly at all?
Have you not taken your son out for walks op? Does he see people out and about?

TabbyMumz · 08/06/2020 15:41

Weve been travelling further than 5 miles to go to the supermarket, even though there is one nearer, there has been no police anywhere. There is far too much traffic around for them to stop people.

Mamimawr · 08/06/2020 15:46

My uncle and my friend have both been stopped during the last two weeks, both have cars registered in Wales.

Pootle40 · 08/06/2020 15:53

Is it 5 miles for exercise or 5 miles full stop? In Scotland we are to use common sense about meeting friends and family outdoors. The 5 mile rule is to avoid all the exercising in beauty stops.

TabbyMumz · 08/06/2020 15:58

5 Mile's is a rule of thumb for exercise and visiting family. You can go as far as you like if it's for work that you cant do at home, or to care for someone or to go to doctors or hospital if necessary.

TabbyMumz · 08/06/2020 15:59

I'm sure they actually said to use common sense in rural areas where 5 miles gets you nowhere and you need to go over that for shops etc.

DBML · 08/06/2020 19:44

Gosh op. Is anyone apart from the one or two on this thread actually following those rules?

Welsh government are bonkers. They have made some really stupid rules up.
They’ve extended the school summer term by a week, meaning all children can access an additional 2 HOURS of time with a random teacher. Meanwhile they are going to give them an extra 5 DAYS! off in October. You couldn’t write it.
They are soon to be opening self contained tourist accommodation...but the tourists must stay within 5 miles. I mean it would be funny if they weren’t so useless.

I just went shopping in Cardiff, about 30 miles from my house because I prefer the Asda in the Bay. We sat and had a McDonalds in the car to make an extra nice trip of it.

I popped up my mums yesterday and then my grandads. They live a good 30 minute drive from me.

If I’m shut in the damn car, what difference does it make if I drive 5 miles or 100 miles to see my family?

I don’t trust Welsh government as far as I can throw them for numerous other reasons. Mark Drakeford is as useful as a chocolate teapot. So I’m done with their idiotic rules. Go and visit your family op.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/06/2020 20:22

Yes you can use common sense in a rural area like mine, if your supermarket is over five miles away, but that doesn’t mean driving sixty miles to see a grandparent because your child is missing them !
We are all missing them. We will be missing them a lot more if we have a big increase in numbers and kill half of them off.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/06/2020 20:23

The only way to minimise and slow viral spread is to stay local.

Mamimawr · 08/06/2020 20:43

Parts of north Wales have the worst rates of Covid-19 in the Uk, now is not the time to ignore the laws to stay local. The Welsh Barometer Poll that came out this week shows that most people agree with how Mark Drakeford has handled this pandemic. I wouldn't vote labour, but I do think he's done a good job.

MrsTannyFickler · 08/06/2020 21:14

As much as I am missing friends and family and feel a total Billy no mates I am glad I'm in Wales not England presently.
Let's not forget that here in Wales we have less hospital beds per head of population.
I think it's more important than ever to stick yo the rules right now.
So many people seem to have jyst stopped givingca shut though and doing what the fuck they please so you won't be alone if you decide to go.

FancyARoot · 08/06/2020 22:07

it is categorically against the rules, and if everyone breaks them then Wales will see a huge upsurge in cases.

What, like in every other country which has relaxed lockdown?

Oh wait......
