Food Prices

Has anyone else noticed food prices steadily rising since the crisis started?

Our weekly shop must cost about 20% more. Also noticed packets getting smaller for the same price.

I’ve started shopping completely differently so it’s like comparing apples and cucumbers.

Flowersinthewild · 07/06/2020 20:40

Yes I have noticed a price increase, was having a conversation the other day with a relative about how much we were both spending on food and not actually buying anything more then usual.

Mistlewoeandwhine · 07/06/2020 20:51

Yes they have gone up a lot.

Deelish75 · 07/06/2020 20:53

Yes I've noticed the food prices. The supermarkets don't seem to be doing as many offers. Not noticed to packaging getting smaller though.

Astabarista · 07/06/2020 20:58

I’ve noticed there are far less offers, which I used to use to save money, and that’s pushed the shopping bill up. Some things have gone up too.

Branster · 07/06/2020 21:05

Yes quite early on in the lockdown. I thought it was because we only shopped once a week. But the lack of offers and slight increase of individual items does make food shopping more expensive for sure. I notice it on a regular basis.

Buckingham1988 · 07/06/2020 21:08

Yes as well as reduced offers I've noticed the cheaper brands have just disappeared and you have to buy a more expensive alternative.

user1486131602 · 07/06/2020 21:09

Me too! The increases seem unbalanced for the quantity/quality.

But, what I notice is we seem to be buying more food, more often and whereas it was a few pounds for the few things we needed, think milk, bread, paper and chocolate bar for a few pounds it hows seems to cost more than £20!

Went to the supermarket yesterday for a full shop, first one since March, and it cost £259!

Rhayader · 07/06/2020 21:15

I was previously only buying dinner for 4/5 nights a week. Now I’m buying breakfast lunch and dinner for 7 days a week plus snacks etc so it’s impossible to compare. At the beginning I did notice that things weren’t on offer but I don’t think anything has changed in the last 6 weeks.

The80sweregreat · 07/06/2020 21:16

Gone up and up :(

cyclingmad · 07/06/2020 21:22

Oh god yes my waitrose is unbelievably expensive if didnt used to be was on alot of basics on par with prices of tescos. Not any more.

Alot of multi offers gone.

Only get offers where there is too much stock and dates running out.

I went to lidl and even thought their prices had gone up a bit

Justgivemewine · 07/06/2020 21:23

We are spending a lot more too.

A combination of increased prices/less offers
More meals being eaten at home
More comfort/junk/snack type food

FAQs · 07/06/2020 21:24

Yes, the food I bought a couple of months ago for £50 was just over £70 yesterday.

whichteaareyou · 07/06/2020 21:27

I spent £80 in ASDA the other day on literally nothing! I'm still so annoyed!

whichteaareyou · 07/06/2020 21:28

That was o top of my normal Tesco £100 shop! There's only 2 of us!

ClimbDad · 07/06/2020 21:45

Glad it’s not just us, but it’s sad to hear. Going to make things even tougher for a lot of people.

Brexit is going to make it a lot worse.
I worry for families who are already struggling.

Yep

And alcohol in our case 😳

howdidwegetheremary · 07/06/2020 21:57

Like others I’m seeing a huge cost increase in my weekly shop. I’ve concluded it’s due to price increases, all meals being eaten at home so more needed, lack of offers, and having to buy more expensive alternatives due to stock issues e.g. I usually buy Tesco own free range eggs however, only branded ones at double the price.

Keepdistance · 07/06/2020 22:22

Lucky to get eggs.
There were none in asda online the other week.
Im probably buying more tins
Uht milk
Part baked rolls
But still very expensive
Im also getting a couple of books
Craft stuff
Etc but maybe 2w stuff coming to £270! Lidl it was 60-70 a week.

There is still a lot unavailable (bread flour/yeast/timned mince/tinned curry).
Maybe they are trying to put off hoarding?
You would have thought supermarkets were doing well they were the only thing open and people bought extra. The only thing they lost was clothes sales. (Though also teaco limit online reduced our shop a lot and no extras)

It's rubbish i dont want to spend all our earnings on food. Ideally id be saving some in case of redundancy.

howdidwegetheremary · 07/06/2020 22:26

Eggs are very hit and miss Keepdistance more often than not they are unavailable.

EvilPea · 07/06/2020 22:29

Yes they’ve gone up. Was talking to the check out assistant in Sainsbury’s a few weeks ago.
What’s not helping is the lack of choice as well, not being able to go to two or three shops to get the best deals. As well as shops only carrying a few lines of an item.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 07/06/2020 22:34

Absolutely evil

UnderTheBus · 07/06/2020 22:35

Some prices have definitely increased. Most ot by a few pence, but some significantly. A white cabbage in asda was priced at £1.56 last week which seems extortionate - it's usually less than half that!

I have also noticed fewer offers. For example, for as long as I can remember, asda have always had a "3 for £10" on various meats. That offer is no longer running.

UnderTheBus · 07/06/2020 22:37

What’s not helping is the lack of choice as well
This is true. If you usually buy the store brand item and its unavailable, you have to buy the branded version which can be double the price or more for some items. This has definitely increased my shopping costs.
