Blood Type A and Coronavirus

Seen some news stories on this recently - research coming out of China, Russia and Germany I think. Does anyone know much about this or have any thoughts?

See previous thread.. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/3930137-Anyone-with-type-A-blood-had-coronavirus

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/06/2020 22:18

Before Corona was even a thing I did read somewhere that there was a link between blood types and different illnesses.

Can’t remember exactly but along the lines of Type As were more susceptible to colds but were virtually immune from getting stomach upsets/food poisoning type illnesses
I think with type O it was the other way around. Always getting stomach upsets but never colds

So saying type A were more likely to get Covid seems to fall in line with these findings.

historyrocks · 06/06/2020 22:29

That’s interesting. I’m O- and never have colds. I’ve maybe had a couple of mild ones in the last ten years. But I get every stomach bug going and am paranoid about not eating food that’s going off as I get so I’ll.

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 06/06/2020 22:32

I'm type A and often get colds, rarely get upset stomach.

Kidneybingo · 06/06/2020 22:36

I'm A. Get heavy colds but not stomach bugs too.

Vinorosso74 · 06/06/2020 22:38

Just to counteract that.... I'm O and rarely get stomach bugs/upsets (I am vegetarian so reduced chance of food poisoning). I get ocassional colds-one or two a year and rarely bad colds.

milkjetmum · 06/06/2020 22:42

Same here I am a and husband is o. I had (I think) coronovirus as did our daughters but he didn't have any symptoms. But a vomiting bug will always get him and not me. It allows us to stick to the rule in our house that we are only allowed to be illl/injured/need surgery one at a time Wink

Mistlewoeandwhine · 06/06/2020 22:45

I’m type A. I once got such bad food poisoning I had to have a big injection in my arse to stop me vomiting 😁
Tbh, I’m fat and 49. If Covid is going to kill me, it’s more likely that than my blood group. Being 50% more likely to end up on a ventilator is still a tiny percentage more than the likelihood anyway. I’m a worrier but this statistic is not the thing worrying me.

Nat6999 · 06/06/2020 22:49

I'm type A, rarely get colds or flu, probably had flu twice in my life (I'm 54)

namechangenumber204 · 06/06/2020 22:50

Well my husband is screwed then, he is (slightly) overweight, blood group A, bald with heart trouble. Mind you so am I, diabetic, overweight with heart trouble. Kids will be chuffed to get their inheritance early...

Pebblexox · 06/06/2020 22:52

I'm a neg and constantly have colds (on average once a month) but very rarely get sickness bugs or anything like that.

MashedSpud · 06/06/2020 22:52

I’m type A. I haven’t had a cold in four years and never get stomach upsets.

My sister is type 0, has colds fairly regularly and has ibs.

Ohnopoo · 06/06/2020 22:56

Interesting! I am o- and rarely get colds. I can remember having 2 bad ones in the last 20 years plus flu over 10 years ago.
I can virtually guarantee a stomach bug once a year or so though. Husband and kids v rarely get stomach bugs but were all floored with a flu type illness in November that didn’t touch me!

chocolicious · 06/06/2020 22:56

I'm type A.I can't remember the last time I had a cold and I've never had flu.I've never had a stomach bug either.

Nomorewineever · 06/06/2020 22:56

I’m A neg. never had a food bug or upset stomach in my life. I’ve only ever vomited once through a hangover, and even then in 45 years I think once is pretty impressive Grin. As a child I never had tummy aches or bugs either.

But viruses love me. I’ve had the lot, and been walloped by a lot of them. I had measles at 6 and was hospitalised due to my temperature. I had chicken pox as an adult and that was deeply unpleasant. Severely episodes of flu over 20 years (two of which led to pneumonia) and i would suggest more ‘colds’ than average. I’m a healthy weight, have full screen bloods in January every year to test for deficiencies and none there. So I could possibly tally with this evidence.

goose1964 · 06/06/2020 22:59

I'm A ,seem permanently to have a cold. I do get stomach upsets but the last one I had was about 10 years ago.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/06/2020 23:01

I'm A neg and right enough do not get stomach bugs. Never had food poisoning, I don't throw up, I've never have an upset tummy lasting past one poop (TMI sorry Grin). DH is O and his stomach is much more sensitive than mine, although he's a pooper not a puker.

I wouldn't say I'm overly susceptible to colds, but I did used to get a bad throat infection pretty much every year for about 10 years. I do struggle to throw the sinus stuff of colds off but that could just be genetic as my dad's side have all sorts of issues there. I did get hand, foot and mouth bloody horribly though when I caught it from DD, but I'd never had it as a child.

Zaphodsotherhead · 06/06/2020 23:03

O neg here and I rarely have flu, hardly ever get colds now but used to get absolute stinkers as a child so reckon I've probably got immunity to most of the worst ones now. I rarely get stomach upsets either. I'm pretty sturdy.

My kids are also all O neg and it seems to be respiratory illnesses that are worst for them. DD1 suffers from a very bad chest and gets chest infections frequently (and badly) DD3 has recurrent throat infections and tonsillitis. Both boys are asthmatic, and all five have awful hayfever.

None of them get stomach problems, although DD3 has a lot of problems with acid reflux.

Obviously we are only a tiny study, but I'm wondering if scientists are seeing correlations that are purely co incidental.

Sproglets · 06/06/2020 23:03

I'm type A. Rarely get a cold even more rarely get stomach bugs even when everyone else in the house does.

Proudpeacock · 06/06/2020 23:04

This is interesting. I am A positive and have an iron stomach. DH is O positive and has IBS. I am much lower risk re Covid barring the blood group thing.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/06/2020 23:05

Oh and I don't get coughs but DH, who is O, does get them quite persistently and they remain long after the cold is gone. My colds are always just in the sinuses, never the chest.

chocolatviennois · 06/06/2020 23:07

My thoughts are why is there no research on those with AB or B blood groups and coronavirus? Or if there has been some please could someone link to it.

Tigerty · 06/06/2020 23:10

A neg and don’t tend to get colds but I do get a lot of stomach bugs. In fact I have one at the moment. I’m thinking at my age I’m surely through the entire list of available stomach bugs and thus immune to them all (fat chance).

Imcrapwithusernames · 06/06/2020 23:13

I'm Onegative and rarely gets colds but I do get them, had flu (proper knock you off your feet for weeks flu) twice in my life (33years old) but I never get stomach bugs either i have no memory of every having a stomach bug and my mum says I never had them as a child either.

My OH is Apositive and him along with our 3 children had terrible stomach bugs before christmas (I was the only one didnt)

My OH had every symptom for covid in late April but I got zero symptoms

Imcrapwithusernames · 06/06/2020 23:14

I will say I do get stomach problems though - heartburn, reflux etc constantly but never actual bugs
