Sew-your-own face mask - any recommended patterns?

Can anyone recommend a pattern for a basic face mask? Preferably one that can easily be adapted for children?

I have a sewing machine (that I haven’t used for years), lots of cotton fabric and elastic so I should have everything I need but I’m a bit bamboo led by the variety of different patterns available. Shaped? Pleated?

I've made a few different styles/shapes to see what worked best for us.
Simple pleated ones are easy to cut and sew but I found were quite baggy round the side

The Olsen mask is a very very popular one and fits really nicely but too faffy to make for me. It's available in 4 different sizes I think www.sewcanshe.com/blog/simple-step-by-step-tutorial-for-the-olson-mask-pattern

The one I settled on is this one, simpler than the Olsen one but similarly shaped - fits nicely enough over the nose that you don't need an insert wire.

My top tip is to use jersey fabric 'yarn' instead of elastic or ties - basically cut strips of jersey 1" wide and pull to roll it into a yarn. It's much more comfortable on the ears and you can either tie it behind your ears or behind your head depending how long you make them

I made pleated ones which were fairly straightforward once I worked out what the pattern wording meant.

However my daughter has a few shaped ones with a filter insert and they are objectively more impressive for fit.

I've tried a few different one and the one on this link is my favourite.

I've been making the shaped one and they have a pattern for children's sizes too. I've been addi g a noise wire by putting a length of pipe cleaner in the top seam and sewing a channel around it.

Sorry my link doesnt appear to be working. It's the Big Community Sew website. www.bigcommunitysew.co.uk/

Thanks - this is the kind of tried-and-tested advice I was looking for. I might try a pleated one first while I get myself reacquainted with my sewing machine and see how we go. The shaped ones do look like they would do a rather better job it must be said!

I like these ones. Various size options and there are options to make it quite simple, or to add in a pocket and space for a nose wire.

I use pipe cleaners for the nose wire, and clean, unused shoelaces to tie the mask on.

I’ve been using the Craft Passion one too, there are different options to adapt for fastenings in case you can’t get hold of certain materials.

This one has worked best for me, It's less fabric on my face than the pleated ones and it doesn't ride up over my eyes. dh finds it fogs his specs though. He finds the pleated ones better for his face.

Raphanus3217 · 06/06/2020 13:23

Pleated ones preferred here.

If making pleated ones, make a channel down the side for drawstring ties. Makes for a much better fit than ties attached to the corners.

Davincitoad · 06/06/2020 13:32

I can’t get the pleated one to open out any good patterns?

PestymcPestFace · 06/06/2020 13:35

Pleated pattern

Don't worry if you end up with side channel sticking out from the top and bottom of the mask a bit, actually seems to improve the fit.
