Vitamin K

Thought this might be of interest. I take vitamin K already along with vitamin D. (as recommended to take together) Wonder if there is some link there

Thanks for this - very interesting. I also take it with vit d but didn’t realise it could be helpful in and of itself Smile

tootyfruitypickle · 05/06/2020 21:47

I’m a bit confused by this as I thought one of the issues was blood clots and yet vit k helps blood to clot ?
I take transexamic acid for heavy periods. Early on I read a study that suggests it might be a useful drug for covid. But then more recently I read about patients having blood clots and I’ve been trying to take jt a sparingly as possible - anyone know what the science here is?

Orangeblossom78 · 06/06/2020 05:52

I wondered if it could be something to do with Vitamin D as that also seems to be linked.

Vitamin K, which occurs naturally in, for instance, eggs and spinach, plays a part in the coagulation of the blood and in the protection of the elasticity of the lungs, both of which are compromised in some coronavirus patients.

I would advise caution with self administering supplements in general and Vit K in particular.
If someone is susceptible to blood disorders of genetic origin but not yet diagnosed, taking Vit K willy-nilly could be catastrophic. It can also interfere in a seriously negative way with certain medications.
Yes Vit K (I can’t remember if 2 or 1) is necessary for Vit D supplementation.
Isn’t transexamic acid helping with coagulation in some way ( I can’t remember exactly but I read somewhere that is an interesting ingredient for treating spider veins when taken orally) in which case Vit K supplement wouldn’t be a good idea. Ask your dr. Just in case.

tootyfruitypickle · 07/06/2020 06:24

@Branster thanks yes it helps with clotting hence stops period being so heavy - also carries slight risk if blood clots which js why I wonder how it sits alongside covid.
I’m only taking vit d - it looks like vit k is fairly easy to get in a normal diet if you eat eggs cheese and fish

KeepWashingThoseHands · 07/06/2020 09:28

As someone who has suffered multiple blood clots in separate instances with no known genetic predisposition and now take anti-coagulants long term (which is a whole other treat in itself) I've had to monitor Vit K intake. I DO NOT recommend Dr Google as a source on which to determine use of a supplement without blood tests.

Healthy balanced diet and some sun first.

@tootyfruitypickle

Here's some digestible science on it:

www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01403-8

Basically anyone who is prolonged immobilised (in bed sick) is at an increased risk of clots irrespective of COVID, but this thing called the ACE2 receptor protein is key as that's basically how COVID gets in the cells. It's interesting the tiny clots might be the reason for low oxygen.

There's a lot of research going on around ACE2 as this was known already.

Anti-coags taken preventatively are not yet recommended for all COVID patients.

Branster · 07/06/2020 10:05

tootyfruitpickle the thing is nobody knows why these blood clots appear in patients. There are so many reports obout so many different things that it is hard to know what is the safest way forward for existing medication 🤕

Call your local dr and ask if it is safe for you to either reduce the dose or come off it altogether. Dependant of how happy you’d be with going back to heavy periods. I know there are (at least) 2 types of Vit K but I don’t know if they have the same action on the blood.
As mentioned above, it is very easy to get Vit K from diet which may mean that it can be easy to overdose if you are on certain medication without even knowing.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/06/2020 10:16

The one I have is K2

OP posts:
tootyfruitypickle · 07/06/2020 10:35

I can’t come off it, but I can probably reduce the dose by increasing ibuprofen intake (within guidelines), But for 2-3 days each month I need both regularly and will still be up 2 nights with the pain. Hopefully as I am active and generally lucky with my health and not in a high risk this won’t be a issue .

tootyfruitypickle · 07/06/2020 10:37

The blood clots thing makes sense with care home patients. How awful

megletthesecond · 07/06/2020 10:38

I'm pretty good with my dark green leafy veg and we have organic eggs so we should be ok.
Poor DS had kale snuck in his pizza last night mixed in with basil.

tootyfruitypickle · 07/06/2020 10:43

Kale is amazing for its vit k levels. I’ve been pondering how to insert it into dd’s food - she’s older so a bit more suspicious !

tootyfruitypickle · 07/06/2020 10:45

We should all exercise more even if just walks and eat more eggs and green leafy veg - I can be rubbish on this and it’s ridiculous it’s taken a pandemic to make me do more of what we already know is good for us! Also when I run frequently, my periods are far better Hmm. Win win !

Orangeblossom78 · 07/06/2020 11:49

The reason I'm taking it is because I was diagnosed with vitamin d deficiency so was advised to take vitamin d in quit high doses. If you do this without k as well it may cause calcification problems apparently. So I take a combined supplement. I have reduced the dose since vitamin d levels improved.

I think it's worth mentioning that the Zoe app covid.joinzoe.com has recently asked questions about people taking various regular supplements. It would therefore be good if as many people as possible (whether taking regular supplements or not) use the app, so that the scientists at Kings College get the evidence they need to study whether any supplements do have a protective effect.

Orangeblossom78 · 07/06/2020 14:13

I agree that a healthy diet and exercise are the best ways of getting healthy- if possible to
