Will masks be made compulsory in shops now as well?

And do you think they should be? (Along with public transport)
Particularly smaller shops?

I wear a face covering when I go to the supermarket though I forgot to take it last time. In future I'll always leave a clean one on my shopping bag so I can't forget.

I'l be avoiding other shops anyway if you have to queue to get into them and will just buy online. At least you can order other stuff online without the pain of trying to get a delivery slot, it just comes when it comes.

qweryuiop · 05/06/2020 18:31

@Flowersinthewild

I hope shops don’t make it compulsory and if they do it won’t be good for their business.

People are already going to be avoiding public transport now because of making masks compulsory.

Isn't that likely part of the point? They want people to avoid public transport unless necessary. If wearing a mask puts people off, their journey probably wasn't necessary.

(I acknowledge you mention health reasons further down - but there will apparently be exceptions made for health conditions, though how they can check that...)

Emmapeeler1 · 05/06/2020 18:36

It’s just doing something for the sake of it by the government. Not recommended by WHO and if it made a difference, even a small one, surely would have been better being implemented from the word go.

This.

SarahTancredi · 05/06/2020 19:05

There is also the fact it renders cctv almost useless

We ask helmets and hoods to be removed then masks are allowed ?

With the sale of age restricted products and trying to identify customers who have been barred or are known for theft/fraud it's the perfect disguise to get back in

PestymcPestFace · 05/06/2020 20:10

Not recommend by WHO

Some people are so out of date
www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/world/2020/jun/05/who-changes-advice-medical-grade-masks-over-60s

7.5 billion people requireing face coverings has been a bit problematic, so they are creeping in with the advice.

OddBoots · 05/06/2020 20:16

It is the case in other countries so I wouldn't be surprised. It will put some people off going in shops but it will also mean other people who have been avoiding shops now would be more willing to go so it will balance out.

midwestsummer · 05/06/2020 20:48

live in a country where masks are mandatory at all times, other then when you have food and drink in front of you in a socially distanced restaurant. Honestly, it is not a big deal and you get used to it v quickly

We have to wear them indoors in public areas including all shops. It becomes normal v quickly.

Raaaa · 05/06/2020 20:51

Hopefully not ..

Myfriendanxiety · 05/06/2020 21:20

I really hope not. But then I avoid shops anyway at the minute.

I’m hard of hearing and if I can’t lip read I really struggle, face masks make it really difficult for me.

daisychicken · 05/06/2020 21:26

I fully support wearing masks to help protect each other but, as a profoundly deaf person, I am terrified of being in a position where I can't even lipread to try and understand what people are saying to me. It's not as easy as using pen and paper but having to cope even more with people's irritation/anger when you can't understand them. I'm not going out much anyway but if masks are mandatory, I won't be able to go out to shops etc and I, like many deaf people, will be isolated even further than we already are.

But, there is no perfect way to deal with this situation..

ItsInTheShed · 05/06/2020 21:29

can you really expect retail staff to wear a mask for an 8 hour shift?

talking to customers through it, wearing it all day? grim

ItsInTheShed · 05/06/2020 21:30

and refusing entry to every child and adult not wearing one?

BananaPop2020 · 05/06/2020 21:34

I really hope people this doesn’t happen, or if it does, that it has a clear end date.

Gottheteeshirtandlostit · 05/06/2020 21:37

Medical issues aside I really don't see why people are making a fuss about this. Face coverings already recommended in shops in Scotland. I hope it is made compulsory.

All the pharmacists (and their staff) in my area are wearing face masks all day already!

I hope they do become compulsory in shops too - it'll help to protect the people working in shops for a start!

SudokuBook · 05/06/2020 22:35

I just want a bit of bloody honesty from the government. I don’t trust a thing they tell us as they have changed their stance so often on things.

Thisdressneedspockets · 05/06/2020 22:35

It would be a no from me. I'd be happy to use one out of courtesy to shop staff of I was within 2m of them. If it's mandatory, I'll avoid shops.

Voice0fReason · 05/06/2020 22:36

I don't understand the huge fuss about this.
With the exception of those with medical exemptions, just wear the mask all the time you are in an enclosed space or in close proximity to anyone else.
Sure there are some disadvantages, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't use them.

meuca · 05/06/2020 22:41

Another person here in a country with mandatory masks. I went to the hairdresser the other week and sat through a 3-hour treatment with mask and gloves. You get used to it.

SudokuBook · 05/06/2020 22:45

1 in a thousand people have it now. So it’s now going to make a massive difference to wear them, but it was ok not to wear them in March when idiots were piling into supermarkets and 1 in 40 people had it? Eh?

user1493494961 · 05/06/2020 22:49

Yes, I think they will be.

TheCanterburyWhales · 05/06/2020 23:02

Itsintheshed- yes, our retail workers wear masks all day. Some of them wear plastic visors as well. And latex gloves (much worse than the masks for me tbh)

Children don't have to wear them. You are, as an adult, turned away if you are not wearing one from most shops etc.

As the infection rate in the country I'm in (and particularly the region I'm in ) is next to nothing now, I don't envisage it going on for much longer.

Pippioddstocking · 05/06/2020 23:10

Lots of NHS staff with Claustrophobia, Anxiety, Asthma, Autism all managed to get used to wearing masks.
It is uncomfortable to start with but everyone very quickly got used to it, much quicker than we all thought we would.

Emmapeeler1 · 05/06/2020 23:39

some people are so out of date

OK, I see the WHO has this afternoon recommended them!

I don't think before it was because of numbers of people though. They didn't think they made a difference, and they thought it would give people a false sense of security. But it looks like they have changed their minds based on 'evolving evidence'.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/06/2020 10:26

I'll carry on colouring my own until masks are no longer required, I can't sit there for hours wearing one, I feel panicky at the thought. The hairdressers have said if I want it cut I can wash my hair myself at home and leave with it wet and have the first appointment of the day so I don't have to wait. I still don't know if I can do it.
