I still don't understand the face coverings thing.

Is seems like, again, the government has gone with public pressure rather than what will actually make a difference.

The WHO says only people with illness or those caring for them should wear masks.

In all other cases, whilst it may offer some protection to those around us, it actually increases the risk to the wearer because if someone with the virus breathes near you, the droplets are "caught" by the mask and therefore spend much more time close to your face.

Also, all these people buying pretty homemade masks etc, there's no point having one mask. They need to be changed frequently, if you're to avoid increasing the risk to yourself. Always once damp, which will be quite quickly, as you breathe. And you mustn't touch them, which will surely be nigh on impossible.

Plus, they're expensive. C. £5. If you need a few each, in a family, that's quite an expense at a time when we know many families are struggling.

I'd wear one to protect others but I'm not comfortable doing it in the knowledge that increases the risk to me, which is what Jenny Harries previously told us it would do.

Here in Boston we are supposed to wear them in public when social distancing can't be maintained. I usually pull it down when I can keep a 6 foot distance.

They won't let you in to any shop or supermarket if you are not wearing a mask at the moment here.

I’m a hairdresser and if anyone wants their hair doing when we open back up next month, they need to be wearing a mask. I have a list a mile long of people desperate to get in, so if anyone feels like not complying they’re welcome to jog on. I expect most salons will be the same.

Whatelsecouldibecalled well on public transport you're closer together and with strangers. Exposed to many different people instead of the same few. Also there's the problem with communication with children which doesn't apply to public transport.

There may be other factors, but clearly there are differences.

@Whatelse ´ I’m slightly confused. Announce mandatory on public transport but we have been told specifically NOT to wear them in schools, nurseries etc. How is this different?´ YES this is crazy.

I'm sick of the attitude towards mask wearing. As a PP the sneering is fucking awful. 'I saw a man in Lidl touch his face adjusting his mask ha ha ha Hmm' like the person laughing is oh so superior.
I'm pro mask. Evidence is limited but that is only due to this being a new phenomenon.
It doesn't matter if I wear my mask and lick my fingers because I'm not wearing it to protect myself its to protect others.

@LastTrainEast when schools go back fully teachers can be in contact with 150 different pupils a day assuming a 30 person class 5 period a day. Even if they reduce that to try to adopt the 2m rule call it 15 a class that’s still 75 different pupils a day to teach. 375 pupils a week and that’s if you don’t teach a core subject like English where every pupil in the school has at least 4 English lessons a week. Even with smaller class sizes you’ve still got 1115 say pupils on site moving round etc I wouldn’t call that a ‘few’ I’m not against mask I just don’t understand the logic. Nurseries I kind of get. Same kids smaller groups and little ones need to see faces and you can’t mask small children. Get that. Secondary school I don’t understand why not.

There's also plenty of studies by well respected doctors that have the conclusion they aren't helpful. I believe them and won't wear one.

It makes me laugh seeing the ones driving alone in cars with face masks on, with the window up

This happened in April...

And nope, my hairdresser has not asked me to wear a face mask and has said she doesn't expect anyone else to. My cousins a hair dresser to and not asking people to wear them to the hairdresser above.

I hate mine, but I'll wear it shopping. Not in the car...

I don't wear a mask, mostly due to not believing everything I hear and read. I have an inquisitive mind and don't take things at face value.

I'd make a great detective 😷

It’s quite easy to make home made ones - either sewing machine or no sewing machine. There’s even one you can make from an old T-shirt. Google is your friend.
Then you don’t have to keep buying the disposable ones

I find a thong over the head works just as good.

How can you wear a mask and have your hair done? I haven't seen any masks that stick to your face without requiring something to go round ears or back of your head. Which would get in the way of most hairdressing. Unless it's fringe cuts only? 🤔

This was needed 3 months ago, not now.

6 new cases recorded in my county of half a million, yesterday. I shall wear a mask in small enclosed spaces but only for the few minutes necessary. You don't want to be scraping me up when I pass out.

What's to stop people from pulling their top up over their nose and mouth? It's a face covering, it covers what they ask to be covered.
Is that okay?

What's supposed to happen with regards to those who are autistic? Or have anxiety, claustrophobia or sensory issues?

I suffer from huge anxiety surrounding having my nose and mouth covered due to domestic abuse. I have tried with face masks, I cannot get on with them.
I'm lucky in the respect that I have a car, can drive from A to B and afford to fill up/park when needed.

What happens to those who can't? Are they excluded from public transportation? Way to isolate those groups further.

For those who find face masks onerous I wonder if a visor would be acceptable?

Report
Shallwedancetomojito · 05/06/2020 00:22

Why don't we all walk around with buckets over our heads and have done with it.

Do we ever see any member of the government with a face mask on?

Why don't the police wear masks?

Are these people all immune to the virus? I think not.

Or maybe they know something we don't.

@CovidDetective I've been to the hairdresser - they are open here in France. They have several pages of written rules that they must adhere to, including hairdressers and clients wearing masks, hairdresser wears visor also, clients not touching the door, hand disinfection on arrival, disinfect client space and tools between clients, disposable gowns and towels, hairdresser can only have one client at a time, no magazines or drinks, hairdryers can only be used with a diffuser. I had my hair coloured and cut. The hairdresser gave me a mask; it did get some dye on it and some on my face where the elastics go, but I just washed my face when I got home. My hair is long so mask only got in the way for the dye, but her colleague was doing men and it seemed to go fine (they use masks with ear loops). I chose not to have it dried as I don't get a great look with a diffuser and it was a nice day. It will be interesting to see if the UK has equally stringent rules!

I suppose the bucket could work if it had a see-through panel🤔
And you could keep your hair dry if it rained🤷🏼‍♀️

Also I saw some great masks on Grey's Anatomy this week - there is a deaf doctor in it and in theatre they had masks with clear plastic where the mouth goes so she could lip read!

Not keen. It just makes me paw at my face. Seems to me it’s just doing something for the sake of it without much if any benefit. I don’t use public transport anyway but if it’s brought in in shops I suppose I’ll need to do it. My 11 year old son has autism and sensory issues and he will not be wearing one.

And what about the bus drivers, so they will be wearing masks too? As I've not seen any bus drivers thus far wearing one.

Report

Next it will be mandatory face masks in the home too.
