If schools aren’t back to normal sept?

If schools aren’t back to normal September and you are back to work what are you planning to do? Also do you think the key worker provision will stay for September or do you think it will only available to the summer holidays?

I still imagine a not insignificant proportion of your office staff could work from home, having worked in TV myself.

The vast majority of office jobs can be done from home. I have been wfh for years, so has my DH. My company has realized during the pandemic that even support staff like administrative assistants can do most of their work remotely. We do need people in the office from time to time, but we could also have a few people whose tasks are all office based and assign the work that can be done remotely to people who work remotely.

Childcare however is a huge issue. You really do need child care to work remotely. It’s fine for a random day here and there, but day in and day out, you need child care. So that is going to be the bigger issue. If schools don’t open, then neighborhood based child minding would be a good solution. Some of the People out of work could watch children from their own neighborhood. It would minimize travel and virus spread, basically creating little bubbles.

I am seriously worried about this. Working at home and trying to home school the kids is just not sustainable. Tutors? I don't know...

Scottish schools will only be back part time, and the response from our council to the concerns of parents about this is basically “tough shit”. Not that I blame them, but I do the Scottish government.

What are the chances it'll be the woman who gives up her job due to childcare and the work place not being flexible during the ongoing pandemic?

Equality commission has already written to my workplace to inform/warn them to be very careful about telling staff they can no longer work at home from September

The EHRC will need to explain why they are happy for millions of jobs to be lost as companies go to the wall then if they're not allowed to get workers back to the office in September.

Our Board of Directors have been very clear that we'd be lucky to last till Christmas if we don't have everyone back in the office in September.

EHRC can send all the letters they like but they can do fuck all about how employers run their businesses. Women are going to be worse impacted, as always, but the blame lies with the government and their unjustified part time school approach, not businesses simply trying to keep afloat

I’m already seriously contemplating having to leave my job that I’ve managed to keep for 20 years through 2 children etc.
The job I’m doing can’t really be done from home and so I’ve been made to continue at work (care industry) leaving my DD’s 10 & 13 for part time days.
DH also works but does spend a day or two at home each week. My work don’t look like they would make me redundant which would at least give me some cash so I’m stuck.
Don’t know how we would pay bills if I leave but current situation was not expected to go on for 8/9 months or more.
So little clarity On what the future will look like just keep going round in circles.

There is no reason to think you would have to choose between a Year group place and a Key Worker place.

There is also no reason to think Key Worker groups will suddenly become part time-what makes you think that?

The guidance from our LA makes it very clear that children are only allowed in one bubble.
So you choose keyworker if you need full-time or year group if you can manage without.
You can switch as soon as your yr group starts,be keyworker until the end of term and swap in September or remain keyworker.
You cannot move between bubbles during the week as it defeats the object of bubbles.

It’s keyworker with no education for dd but I get to keep my job

Or non keyworker so dd gets some education but I have to leave work to do the childcare

And the worst bit of this choice is that as keyworkers we’re privileged because we have a choice, most people have the options of part time school or no school at all

Does anyone know if I could delay DCs entry to school to Jan? He is attending 3 days at nursery at the moment which could be better than what school could provide?

I think you technically can defer entry until compulsory school age, but I’m not sure how that works in practice.

If you still need full time care in September, then your child doesn’t ‘need’ to go into the year group place, they’ll ‘need’ to stay in the KW one.

Our KW have all got full time places-the deep cleaning afternoon doesn’t affect them, they have 5 full days every day as a priority

There is no reason to think the school would object to a delay.

The nursery might not be able to continue to offer you the place 3 days a week there in the Autumn term though?

90% of office workers on Mumsnet have posted that they aren’t going back to office EVER AGAIN or until next year so presumably they’ll be fine if their children aren’t back in school full time.

Remember, family members helping out with childcare is FORBIDDEN! Wonder when they’ll drop that.

Well I have always worked from home but dh (private sector) has been told to not to expect to be back in the office this side of Christmas. Neither of us mind that. But we do mind schools not being open. The issue is childcare.

@FrenchSeal everybody office based had been working from home due to lockdown so you haven’t exactly gone out of your way have you? Only recently things have opened up and people have started to go back to work.

Yes they can have keyworker care but then they don’t get an education.

So there is an element of choice but it’s a terrible one.

We can feed ourselves on DHs salary so I will stop work so DD can join her year group bubble in sept and get an education.

Let alone the fact I can’t morally continue to work if it means dd is uneducated I think legally as a parent I have to ensure she is educated - me not the school if I’ve got it right. The school are not educating her if I send her to keyworker so l guess it’s illegal if I don’t figure out a way to educate her?
