Just been reading on the bbc news that people with learning disabilities are at more risk with covid.
My son has a genetic condition and classed as having a learning disability.
Do all people with learning disabilities have health problems or is it something else that makes them vulnerable.

Any advice

Kim

The study looked at those receiving social care support, either in the community or in residential settings (about half and half) and pretty much all adults, receiving care for care from services which provide support for people with a learning disability and/or autism. The date for the under 25s was so small they can't show it.

Its impossible, in reality, to extract much from it other than the fact there were significantly more deaths in this group than the same period last year. It may be as a result of a higher disposition to respiratory illnesses, but its also bound up in the fact that many of these people will have been residents in care homes where the virus was not contained. It doesn't show anything about increased vulnerability for those not receiving care.

My adult son has severe learning disabilities but no health problems. In fact he’s strong as an ox. I can’t remember the last time he even had a cold. He lives At college term time. They are stringent with cleanliness and staff being tested.

I feel he’s safer there With the same staff daily than at home accessing the community with various support workers who also support other people with LD.

a LD doesn't make one necessarily more vulnerable. DD has a chromo disorder and severe learning difficulties but is physically not affected.

However, when you check Google, you will see that the life expectancy for this with LDs in the UK is significantly lower than for those without. One reason is a lower standard of medical care. Would have been surprised if the general issues wouldn't have persisted throughout the Corona crisis. Those with LDs are unfortunately lesser humans in this country. It is as simple as that.
