Is this hayfever?

I have a scratchy dry throat, blocked stuffy nose, postnasal drip, very occasional cough but it's not involuntary if you see what I mean, my eyes hurt sometimes and some sneezing. Does this sound like hayfever? Normally I wouldn't think twice about it but it's bugging me now!

Do you normally get hayfever? I’ve got it really bad today. Sneezing, snotty, eyes hurt and are watery, got headache and my face hurts,

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2020 13:22

Sounds very much like hayfever

AvocadoPrime · 02/06/2020 13:50

@ButterflyBitch I dont usually.. that or I dont notice. But this has been going on unexplained for weeks.

@bikerunski I thought it did. Thank you

I'm also going with hayfever. Pollen count has been phenomenal recently and even my usually non suffering husband has been sneezing.

bellinisurge · 02/06/2020 13:59

Dh had this a couple of months ago - actually a cat allergy flare up. DD and I self isolated for 14 days just in case. And as each day went on it was more and more obvious that it was an allergy.
I read something on the news about this being a common mix up.

AvocadoPrime · 02/06/2020 13:59

I always underestimated hayfever! It's awful. Especially when you get looks if you clear your throat! I feel tired alot and often it's worse as the day goes on.

I also have a head and sinus pain pretty much daily Hmm

Apparently it’s been a bad year so far for hayfever sufferers. Maybe you normally get it quite mildly, y’know just a bit snotty or sneeze a couple of times so you think nothing of it but this year it’s just hundred times worse?
This is my worst day so far, it’s horrible when it’s bad. My whole face and head hurt and my eyes are sore and streaming. I’ve taken a hayfever tablet, squirted some beconase up my nose and taken pain killers and I still don’t feel right.

BikeRunSki · 02/06/2020 14:31

@AvocadoPrime, the main give away “allergy not a cold-flu thing” symptom you have, I’d say is the itchy eyes.

Hayfever virtually knocks DH out from from April to July every year. It gets me a bit, but I can still function, he has days when he really struggles, and he really isn’t a lightweight. We both have outdoorsy jobs!

Try a dab of Vaseline under your nose, this is said to trap pollen before your breathe it in. Not sure if it works, but I did it when I was pregnant.

chipsandpeas · 02/06/2020 14:33

sounds like hayfever, i started getting it about 2 years ago and for me i feel like im getting a cold and stingy eyes

pooopypants · 02/06/2020 14:42

Pollen has been a twat this year, even my non affected DH has been a bit snotty and bunged up. DD ha snot candles every 10 minutes, despite regular antihistamine medicine

Definitely sounds like hayfever to me

Nonnymum · 02/06/2020 14:46

I've never had hay fever before but I have had symptons like OP describes since April. I know a few other people who have also had them for the first time this year. I think maybe the pollen levels are particularly high this year.

AvocadoPrime · 02/06/2020 15:14

@pooopypants Grin

Okay so I'm a new hayfever sufferer then. Yay for the timing of it!
I'm not glad anyone else is suffering but I am glad I can explain these symptoms and can stop panicking about them!

Hay fever onset is also stress related so the current situation probably didn't help! My hay fever this year is awful

NicAndNick · 02/06/2020 15:23

If you want to test take an antihistamine and see if the itching disappears. Piriton (get the non-brand stuff its cheaper, the pharmacist can help) works very quickly or benadryl. The others take a few days to work. Piriton can make some people drowsy so take it late afternoon/early evening and see if it helps.

I always feel better after a shower to wash all the pollen off too. It has been bad this year. Sorry you are suffering, it sucks.

AvocadoPrime · 02/06/2020 15:56

@babychange12 yes stress has been huge lately so could have brought mine on too.

@NicAndNick thank you. I have been taking benadryl. It helps but I feel it wears off too soon. I just had to speak to the doctor about my son as I asked him if I could double up on them. We spoke about my symptoms ect. I've already been referred to ENT but he has prescribed me some strong antihistamines so hopefully that'll help!

Thats good. Hope you feel better with them.

FelineUK · 03/06/2020 00:48

I'm a newbie to hayfever this year too... like a head cold but not.. congestion, sneezing, itchy eyes, chest feels asthma-ish, streaming eyes... as soon as I wake up and open doors to garden it starts.

Cecilia2016 · 03/06/2020 01:21

I thought I was the only one having this symptoms just like FELiNEUK . As soon as I open my windows from my bedroom oh god all the symptoms start until I go to bed. I have never had hay fever before and it all started 2 weeks ago.

AvocadoPrime · 03/06/2020 07:20

Must be because the weather has been so dry. That's exactly how I feel like I'm about to get a cold but not. It's very annoying. I dont think I like the new antihistamines either. Doctor also prescribe a nasal steroid but I dont want to use it because it says they can lower your immune system. Not what anyone needs right nowHmm

OP posts:
Pertella · 03/06/2020 07:23

If it eases or goes away at night it's likely hayfever too

SunnyUpNorth · 03/06/2020 07:25

I suffer from hay fever and I think because the weather has been so dry it’s made it worse. Nothing washing all that pollen away!

I find the nasal sprays work best, they’re localised to where you need it. The hay fever eye drops are usually a lovely relief too. I have tried everything and find Avamys nasal spray the best, but it’s annoyingly still only on prescription. I’ve been using it for about 8 years and been waiting for generic versions of it to pop up but they haven’t yet. The nasal sprays are very localised and I remember when I was pregnant being worried about using them and the dr saying that only the teeniest bit gets into your bloodstream. So I wouldn’t worry too much about it lowering your immune system.

AvocadoPrime · 03/06/2020 07:59

@Pertella it doesnt bother me through the night and I sleep through with no issues.

@sunnyupnorth I used to get given avamys when my sinuses played up. I've been prescribed something else maybe I should give that a go then. The doctor did refer me to ENT about 4 weeks ago but apparently it's a very long wait.
