First day back at school - how was it?

I have a child in Y1 and he's had a brilliant day. Around 20 of the class of 30 came back today, split into two groups across two classrooms. Nothing was terrifying, no weird chalk circles outside in which to play, and no prison like classrooms. All the children coming out at pick up were so happy to be back. Even the fact his best friend is in the other group didn't bother him!

How were your children's days if they went back today?

No place available for Ds2, Year 6, because they've been inundated with requests from key workers.
Sad

Bol87 · 01/06/2020 18:57

See, this thread is simply asking how everyone’s kids got on with their days being different. A joy of positivity.

Jog on with your doom & gloom in this thread. Go create your own. It’s nice to read some positives. Children have really suffered for an illness that barely affects them. I’m glad it’s time for them to resume some normality.

Bol87 · 01/06/2020 18:57

*a jot of positivity

StrawberryBlondeStar · 01/06/2020 18:57

Asleepbob mine in independent sector.

I know many private schools have been lobbying if they can bring more years back on the basis often classes are already 15 or less so already in a bubble

snowballer · 01/06/2020 18:57

And a joy!!

Reception child went back today, had a lovely day. Two back in his class out of 15, so they had 1:1 with teacher and the Ta. Played, enjoyed his phonics work and maths. Has his own desk, pencils and he gets to sit next to his teacher. Apparently his classroom is massive now and the worst bit of his day was dropping his snack on the carpet.

My two preschoolers went back too, had a great day, played lots and were not at all fussed by the different drop off either, staff seemed very relieved all went smoothly and said it was nice to have some sense of normal after so long.

Weekday28 · 01/06/2020 19:03

Mine have been going 3 days a week as we are key workers. However my year 1 went in today and had the best time seeing her friends! My other 2 had some of their friends in today as some parents have now gone back to work.

Wonderful day and eases my guilt of having to sent them for so long

titbumwillypoo · 01/06/2020 19:04

Year 3 keyworkers bubble for me, 6 in, probably 13 by Friday. Two with ECHPs who were good as gold (some concern because they both have a history of spitting) nice chilled day, did some work had some fun, eased them back into it. Good to be back in doing my job.

Solasum · 01/06/2020 19:04

@Aretheystillasleepbob every independent I know of has kids back in the permitted years. The media made a big thing of Eton etc not being back until next term. That is because they are Secondary age not primary, and because at a full boarding school hardly anyone will live close enough to be a day boy instead

Back2WorkForMe · 01/06/2020 19:04

Lovely to hear so many positives. My dd goes back tomorrow, I'm feeling nervous.

mrscampbellblackagain · 01/06/2020 19:06

DD had a lovely day back in yr 6. Pretty much everyone back apart from the few boarders.

She says social distancing was observed, ie, they played tag with a woggle :)

Certainly was at drop off and pick up.

AvocaLove · 01/06/2020 19:10

What a lovely thread. It’s actually made me a little teary.

We’re in NI where we only have 4 more weeks of school left anyway before summer, and schools won’t be back until late August/early September.

I agree that is the right decision for here, but I dearly wish my DC could just see their friends and have a bit of a break from me and our house. It’s been a pretty shitty homeschooling day here and there have been plenty of tears (mostly mine) and so this wee glimpse of normality has made me cry a little - in a good way! I’m glad all your wee ones have had a good day - long may it continue

viques · 01/06/2020 19:13

I am bookmarking this great thread because I want to be able to re read and enjoy the lovely positive comments before the mean ones start kicking in in a day or so Grin

Seriously, well done to all the teachers, TAs, housekeeping staff and caretaking staff in all the schools whose planning, and hard physical work has made the return to school not only possible but so positive.

foxychox · 01/06/2020 19:13

My Yr6 DD went back and loved it. She said that they didn't do much learning but that just being back with her teacher and friends made her happy. The head was outside (socially distancing of course) at pick up and was happy to take any questions. Its a great school and I absolutely trust the decisions that they make....

SummerHouse · 01/06/2020 19:14

@Bol87 well said! Grin

littleumbrella · 01/06/2020 19:15

It's so lovely to read so much positivity. I'm hoping my YR DC get to go back, it was supposed to be this week but the school have postponed further.

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 01/06/2020 19:16

Lovely lovely thread. I don't have children but am thrilled for those who have been able to go back today. I hope all children are back in school soon where they belong.

DoesJeffKnow · 01/06/2020 19:17

First day back here and I think I was more nervous than my DC.

The smile at the pick up was worth it all though. "Best day ever!" apparently.

I was also surprised how all the DC in my child's "bubble" think they've had Covid.

All discussed being ill with a temperature during lock down (confirmed by parents on WhatsApp after school) but none had been to hospital or would be on official figures, so maybe it's been more prevalent than we thought.

DressesWithPockets · 01/06/2020 19:18

My three year old practically ran into nursery this morning, and came out this afternoon really happy and full of beans. I'm so pleased she's back, and i've very little doubt it's been the right decision.

Delatron · 01/06/2020 19:22

Yes it’s such a lovely positive thread. Discussing how the kids got on today. So pleased to hear of equally happy days and happy children.

I don’t think it’s the right thread to argue yet again about this. If you don’t agree then don’t send your children back, luckily you have the choice and don’t read the thread.

Greenpop21 · 01/06/2020 19:23

Went really well at my school ( I’m a hlta) but we only had fewer than half of each year group. It meant their desks could be really spaced out in Y1, 6 and KW group. YR were more fluid but the rest had to stay at their desks with allocated supplies. We ate outside in our groups and played games that enabled them to stay apart. Lots of hand washing so will probably need cream by Friday but was lovely to see their faces again. Some have really grown.

HauntedGoatFart · 01/06/2020 19:23

Thanks for the lovely thread! My Reception DC's start date was pushed back to the 15th and we are counting the days. He's going to love it.

Deelish75 · 01/06/2020 19:24

Thank you OP for this thread.

My DC's school opens next week, I have a Yr6 and a YrR and I have been concerned about how they will organise it especially in the Early Years. We've received an email today where they have outlined how the classrooms will look including photographs which has really put my mind at ease - luckily the head is Early Years focussed.

I think they're looking forward to going back, my youngest is desperate for interaction with her own age group.

Aria20 · 01/06/2020 19:25

Lovely to read these stories. Smile
Well all the teachers, TAs etc

Aria20 · 01/06/2020 19:26

Well done! That should say
